Across the greens

SATURDAY pennant and midweek bowls have been pushed back further as much of the district remains under water. Clubs are reporting play will resume in the last week of November, but with many roads cut off and townspeople busily repairing levee banks and saving homes from being inundated, it could be into December before rinks are full again. Some bowlers took advantage of the warmer, mid-20 degree weather at the weekend to participate in social bowls.

Once again it has been necessary to cancel pennant.

Hopefully it will resume on November 26 for Saturday and November 30 for midweek. It is hoped that our club matches will be played during the time off.

Our greens are to be used for the forthcoming Country Carnival. Thank you to those who are prepared to put in the extra work to make this happen.

Social bowls on cup day was cancelled due to weather conditions. However, there was a good roll-up on Saturday. Winners on the day were Marj, Val and Sue. Well done ladies.

Those players entered in the State Mixed Pairs in Leitchville, it will now be played Sunday, November 27.

A board meeting will be held this Tuesday 7.30pm. Steve has received some of the social shirts. Check out if he has one you ordered.

No bowls, not a lot of news. To those affected by the floods we wish you well and stay safe.

With the high waters still proving most disruptive, we were pleased to get a couple of organised events under way during the week.

No ladies on Tuesday with all supporting the hospital luncheon, so it was the Wednesday night pennant that filled the initial gap.

Organisers were thrilled with the response on a not-so-warm night, with a full green taking part.

Winners for round 1 were Neil Falconer, Brendan Betts and Gary Valentine, who combined flawlessly. Don’t forget that everyone who turns up gets a game.

Onto our Thursday pairs, with another good field. In our best conditions for some time Lee Sutherland and Barney McLoughlan turned in a plus 16 card to pip Laurie Forde and Bill Waters who were 14 shots up after the two games.

The repecharge went the way of Frank Trezise and Lyle Baker winning the last game by four. Two sides were close to the jackpot number of plus 10, but no claimant means we draw for $100 this week.

On Friday, after a well attended practice session we were treated to a magnificent demonstration of slow cooker dining, with the capacity crowd enjoying the great range of recipes.

Well done to all concerned, there was obviously a lot of preparation that went into the night.

A great effort from the Orrs to make their way across from Kerang, and pleasing to see new member Blair Flight having his first hitout at practice.

Thanks to the co-operation from Barham Bowling Club, we sent 60 bowlers across to their fine new facility for a semi-formal practice match.

The home side had the edge in most divisions, although Harrison Keely had a big win in the ones, while Jeff Holloway, Marlene Orr, Brian McLoughlan and Russ Ladson took the chocolates in Division 2.

Three other rinks registered narrow wins after a day enjoyed by all present.

This week we host Pyramid Hill in a similar fashion for a midweek game, a 10am start take notice, while a further Saturday game is in the pipeline as formal pennant has yet another week of suspension.

This will actually run into two weeks as we can’t play against the Vic Open program on November 19. My coin toss prediction is becoming a reality!

Coming up is the Northern Carnival where we host two greens of pairs on November 21, lots of top bowlers attending so well worth a look if you have spare time.

Our next social engagement is a luncheon next Sunday (November 13) at the Gunbower hotel for all desirous of a great meal. The hosts are great sponsors of ours and this is an appropriate way to show our thanks. Names to Mick or Yvonne please to assist catering.

NOVEMBER has arrived, the Melbourne Cup has been run and won, and the temperatures are slowly heading to the warm area.

With no pennant again this week, social bowls took pride of place, with bowlers keen to get back to the normality of inter-club activity, hopefully not too far away.

The Northern District Bowls playing area has cancelled pennant competition for Saturdays until November 26 and midweek until November 30 due to the flood crisis.

It is hoped that we can arrange a pennant practice match against Kerang at a venue to be advised this Saturday, November 12. Members will be advised of arrangements, but ensure club uniform is worn on the day.

Last Thursday, we had 27 players and a mixture of pairs and triples were played over two games.

At the conclusion, Frank Ritchie and John Duckworth were acclaimed the winners with two wins and 17 shots up, a long way in front of the trio of Howard McClelland, Marlene Rawson and Bryce McLeish, who also won both games but only by eight shots.

Third place, on a count-back to Ronnie McKerrow and Rosie Laughlin.

The “chocolates” to president Gary Borg and the “out of form” Stuart Robinson. Apparently, Stuey got lost on his way to Swan Hill recently.

Saturday Bowls, in place of pennant, saw 32 players take part in playing fours. Two games of 10 ends were played. There were three teams with two wins, unfortunately five up was not good enough.

The team of Rob Fisher, the back in form Stu Robertson, Carol Pay and Peter Niall claiming the win with 20 shots up from Noel Robertson, Ken Pay, Rob Curtis and Joyce Tuohy with 14 shots up.

The sought after chocolates went to Lorraine Ritchie, Robert “Fonzie” Taylor, Peter “Ted Bear” Murray and Jean Duckworth.

Due to circumstances the Ladies Club Championship shield had not been presented and at the conclusion of play Dale Spinks presented the shield to Ladies Champion Lorraine Ritchie.

A great night was held at our sponsors the Royal Hotel after bowls with more than 30 people enjoying the evening

Our Twilight Triples is scheduled to commence tomorrow night at 6pm.

After three weeks of cancellations, team captains have been advised that this competition is starting and from all reports, the weather will be conducive to good bowling and an entertaining night.

The usual barbecue will be available and a new innovation will be the competition for the Wednesday $20s.

Coming events: Our Club Barham Star Day Tournament is to be held on Sunday, December 4, with an any combination fours event to start at 1pm.

Both Frank Ritchie (0409 439 029) and Aldo (0407 310 762) will take entries.

This tournament is one of most popular so get your teams organised and enter on the sheet on the noticeboard or to those previously mentioned.

The various club events, B Garde Singles, Pairs, Fours and 100 Up entries will be closing soon, so please make sure you enter ASAP. The Club Championship singles draw is now on the noticeboard, with first round games to be completed by November 27. Please help the match committee by getting these games played before the due date. The ladies also have their draw on the noticeboard.

Quambatook

Despite leading at lunch by four shots Division 1 fell away to lose by 10 against Woomelang last week.

Division 2 were short staffed but only went down by eight shots.

Deb Geary’s team were the only winners on the day, getting up by one shot on the last end.

The bowls club hosted a very enjoyable community lunch on Sunday followed by a few fun games of bowls .
