Cohuna Golf

Almost back to normal in bowls circles this week with the exception of points-scoring pennant.

The ladies continued their Tuesday competition with good numbers.

Winners on the day were Rhonda, Helen, Glenda and ring-in Mike, whose presence evened up the numbers.

Further matches were played in the club singles, with the semi-final stage now reached.

Conditions were perfect for Wednesday night bowls, with extra players bobbing up each week. Great to see the night getting bigger and bigger.

Winners on the night were Gary Valentine (again), Michael McLoughlan and Barb Barry, with Gary’s side right up with the ladder leaders.

The Thursday pairs were called off early in lieu of coming weather, which hit as we would have begun our second game.

Not having a lot of luck here, hoping this week will be more fortunate.

Onto Saturday, and wasn’t it great to see two full greens for our combined practice match involving Golf, Cohuna and Gunbower.

Four sections were played, with our neighbours holding sway in all except Division 1. Both clubs supplied trophies for best wins, which were awarded as follows:

Division 1: J.Hammond, G.Easton, D.Orr F.Trezise (Golf) +10

Division 2/2: B.Main, M.Meredith, R.Ballard, K.Foreman (Cohuna) +18

Division 2/3: N.Walkington, K.Hocking, M.Smith, C.Jones (Cohuna) +11

Division 3: P.Coates, J.Pearson. B.Beck, I.Devers (Composite)

Following presentations, president Graeme Peace called secretary Yvonne Eckhardt forward, to bestow on her a life membership of Cohuna Golf Bowls.

He read an outstanding resume of Yvonne’s services to bowls, both at our club and into association ranks.

Fellow life member John Brown assisted with the badge presentation, all of which was supported by acclamation from the capacity clubhouse.

Sunday was a day of rest and reflection, with nearly 40 members and friends reflecting over lunch together at the Gunbower Hotel.

With the Northern Carnival ensuring a busy week ahead for all the club workers, it was great to support one of our major sponsors and have a day out at the same time.

Coming up on November 20 we are holding a members and friends social bowls afternoon, followed by a pizza tea.

Proceedings kick off at 4pm, but names need to be in to Pat, Mick or Cheryle by noon to sort out teams and food orders.

The following Monday we host the first of the Christmas hams nights, as usual a 7pm start for any combination fours teams. Entries to Peter please for this popular event.

Kerang Golf

Another week of no pennant, as the decision makers continue to keep the safety of bowlers and the public in general as safe as can be in these “watery” times.

However, the two local clubs played a match against each other on Saturday, in preparedness for the restart of pennant later in November.

With a few absentees, attending Ron Brown’s funeral in Echuca, the Golf team still managed to field nine rinks against our Kerang friends, in a great social day for both clubs.

Unfortunately, the Kerang team proved too strong, winning six rinks to Golf’s three.

The best rink for Golf was the combination of Ken and Carol Pay, with Gary Borg and Rosie Laughlin, who won by six shots in a team performance.

Other winners were the Rob Malseed team and Noel Robertson’s rink, who got off to a flying start, leading 14/0 early in the game.

For Kerang, the Kevin Teasdale led rink of Kane Wilson, Fred Schmidt and Alyne Fagg were big winners by 35 shots to be the home team’s best performers.

At the presentations, both clubs expressed their thanks to each other for getting this friendly, but competitive game played in the absence of the usual pennant games.

Our Twilight Triples, after a few weeks of cancellations, played their first night last Wednesday evening.

The warm weather was welcome and after the Jim McLeish round-up of our newly acquired guests, the mozzies, everyone had an enjoyable night in the warm conditions.

This event now has a sponsor and will be known as the National Milk Twilight Triples after a generous donation from the National Milk company.

The first night winners were the Deadlies, led by Ian Charles, with Lloyd Murray and Ronarian Dowdy scoring 30 points and +12 shots, collecting the Choice Cut Meat vouchers.

Runners-Up, also with 30 points, but only 10 shots up, were Bryce McLeish, Sonia McLeish and Trevor Linton.

The encouragement award went to Haye’s Real Estate, but they were not in attendance, so Tige’s Terrors were the recipients of the chocolates.

Thursday Social was a wet day cancellation. Maybe we could have played, but would have got wet before we finished, so a sensible decision was agreed on.

The new shirts have arrived – if you ordered one, see Frank Ritchie and he will look after you. If you didn’t order one, Frank will still look after you, as he purchased a few spares in various sizes. Get in quick.

Club Championship games need to be played by November 27.

Don’t leave them until the last minute and then make up an excuse – the match committee will not tolerate.

Our Christmas wheelbarrow competition is being run a little differently this year.

All members will be given books to sell and return. We will not be doing the normal selling in the street this year.

Star Day tournament sponsored by cluBarham is scheduled for Sunday, December 4.

Fliers have been distributed to all neighbouring clubs, so get in quick for this popular tournament. Names/Teams to Frank Ritchie (0409439029) or Aldo (0407310762) or on the entry sheet on the noticeboard.

No pennant again this week as the State Championships are being held in the Shepparton region. Good luck to those attending.

There is a triples event at Barham on Saturday and we will have Social Bowls as usual on Thursday and Saturday.
