Across the Greens

Cohuna

Another great roll-up on Tuesday for social bowls – 30 players enjoyed the sunshine and the greens.

Thank you to those members who take the time to prepare our greens each week. They do a great job.

Winners on Tuesday were Mary, Marj and Sue. Congratulations.

Unfortunately we are unable to showcase our club by hosting players for the Country Carnival due to the water conditions following the recent floods.

We wish all players participating in this event over the next week good bowling.

Saturday we ventured out to Golf for a friendly practice match. After a few early hiccups the day was very enjoyable.

Congratulations to Peter Coates, John Pearson, Bernie Beck and Ian Dever, who won the highest winning margin for the day.

Other winners were Bryan, Mary, Rhonda and Keith in Division 2-2. Norm, Ken, Marian and Corale also had a win in Division 3A.

Those players who helped out at short notice thank you, hope you enjoyed your day.

No official bowls now until round 7 later this month when pennant resumes. This will be an opportunity to get through some of the club events before Christmas.

Friday nights are still going strong, so if you would like to join in, everyone is welcome. Good food, good company, good times. Come on over and have some fun.

Cohuna Golf

Our week in bowls began with the hosting of a pairs section of the Northern Carnival. Two days of pairs play meant our ladies had to forgo their Tuesday bowls, catering in its place, and again a job well done. Back to regular play this week for this hard-working group.

We had only one pair representing the club at this event, along with very few from our local association. More’s the pity, it’s a great event.

Peter and Frank won their section, then went onto the Barham finals, only to be knocked out by the eventual winners in the quarter final.

Wednesday night bowls followed, with a terrific turnout boosted by a keen group of Cohuna bowlers.

Winners on the night were Mike Henshaw, Lee Sutherland and Richard Flinders, well done to you all.

Onto our Thursday pairs and a smaller field this week, for a multitude of reasons.

Best on the day and nailing the Ritchies’ vouchers were Alan Holmes and Jon Henty, while Peter Bibby and John Pearson took off the repechage awards. Bigger numbers are expected this Thursday.

On Saturday a couple of sides supported Barham’s star tournament, with Peter Bibby, Frank Trezise and Jon Henty having a day out to snare first prize.

With the rain stopping just prior to start time the day turned out most successfully, reps from all clubs enjoying play under the big top.

A novel social day was planned for Sunday, with bowls at 4pm followed by a pizza tea. A great crowd of 41 played bowls and along with a few extras, stayed for a knock-up pizza tea.

Winners on the day were Frank Trezise, Ian Morrison and Di Woolhouse, with runners-up Col Black, John Prout and Joan Atkinson.

Many thanks to our friends from Country Care for their contribution to the most enjoyable event.

Coming up is our Nutrien hams night on Monday, teams of four in any combination for a 7pm start. Entries please to Peter, numbers are rather low at present.

Following on December 11 is our biggest day of the year, the classic fours, and with lots of outside entries, plus the obligation of all clubs to attend, it should be a great day.

Kerang Golf

Another week of waiting for our pennant competition to re-commence, this time, as the State Championships are being played in the Shepparton region.

Unfortunately, Saturday Bowls was called of when the rain was looking like settling in for the day.

However, the club was represented by two teams who attended the Barham Bowls Star Day.

The trio of Frank and Lorraine Ritchie and Howard McClelland had a good day with two wins and a draw and the McLeish family, Jim, Sonia and Bryce, enjoyed their day, culminating in some takeaway Chinese for dinner.

Thursday Social was played in sunny conditions with 15 players. We welcomed another newbie in Craig Hicks, who has purchased a house in town.

After two games, we only had one combination who won both games.

Ronnie McKerrow and Kevin Chase took out the major prize, with Ken Pay and Sonia McLeish being the runners-up on a countback from Jimmy and Bryce McLeish and the ‘lucky” Rob Malseed.

The sought after chocolates to Aldo, Noel Robertson and Craig Hicks.

Our second night of the National Milk Pty Ltd Twilight Triples was played last Wednesday in cool, if not cold conditions.

The high score and winner of the Choice Cut Butchers vouchers was the Taylor Ashton Painting team of Rob Fabry, Wayne “Wheels” O’Neill and Steve Gwyer with 32 points.

The runners-up, on a countback with 30 points and 26 shots up, was the Royal Hotel team of Rob Fisher, Ritchie Murray and “secret” weapon David “Rat” Conlan. Unlucky in the countback was the Lions team.

The coveted chocolates to The Golfers, led by captain Jack Hewitt, with his wife Karyl and Doug Meehan with three points. At presentations, we sang Happy Birthday to Lloyd Murray, who was celebrating another of those “over 21” days.

After two rounds, Taylor Ashton painting are on top with 61 points, followed by Deadlies with 59, McAndo 59 and Lions on 47. With 11 points each, Hirdy’s Buslines and Hayes’ Real Estate are at the other end of the ladder.

Reminders – the first round of the Men’s Club Championship is due to be completed by November 27. As mentioned previously – no excuses – please play the games. There are only three games to be played, so thanks to all who have completed their matches.

Our Wheelbarrow Christmas Competition is now under way with all members allocated books to sell. As we are not doing any selling in the shopping centre this year, it is imperative that members sell as many tickets as possible. Thanks again to Carol for organising this annual competition and also to Hall’s Hardware for their generous contribution as well.

The cluBarham Star Day Tournament is coming up on Sunday, December 4. Entries are coming in, so get you team organised and let Frank (0409 439 029) or Aldo (0407 310 762) know you are playing.
