Bowls notes – Kerang Golf

Kerang Golf

BACK in full swing now with Pennant and Star Day tournaments being played in warmer spring-type conditions. One of the major events on our calendar, the CluBarham Fours Star Day Tournament, was played on Sunday.

This tournament has become our biggest for the season and it was great to see 80 players grace the greens on Sunday. Thanks to the volunteers who set up the shades, greens, afternoon teas and refreshment areas – it was great to see all the bowlers enjoying the Kerang Golf hospitality.

The Star Day format is a great concept for tournament bowls in our area and, as well as the local playing area teams participating, a team from Boort joined us for the day. The next Star Day tournament is at Cohuna Golf next Sunday and is one the bigger one day events in our area.

After the regulatory three games, there was only one three-game winner, and that was the Kerang combination of Alyne Fagg, Terry Nolan, Wayne “Tige” Neville and David Randall with 77 points.

In second place, with two wins and a tie, was the Cohuna Golf team of Jon Henty, Gavin Free, Mick Carmody and Craig “Les” Whittacker, who totalled 63 points.

Third place went to the Lloyd Murray team, with Andrew and Ian Charles and Mick Pors, who won two games and totalled 55 points to be just in front of seven other teams who had two wins and a loss.

In the last game, with 27 points, which equates to winning seven of the eight ends was the Marshall Rosewall combination from Kerang. The renowned chocolates to the McKerrow team with Ronnie and Judy, teamed with Rosie Laughlin and Trevor Linton.

In Saturday Pennant the Division 1 team travelled to Wakool and returned victorious on all rinks.

You can’t beat the Wakool hospitality, with their sausage sizzle after bowls in the shade of their fantastic facility.

Frank Ritchie was a 12-shot winner over Rob Walker and Howard McClelland also won by 12 against Ian Main. Lloyd Murray got four shots on the last end and that was the winning margin, after a close tussle all afternoon with Guy Treweek. Final scores were 77/49 and maximum points went to Kerang Golf.

Division 2 played at home for the second week in a row, this time against Cohuna. Stalwart Laurie Gray led his team to a seven-shot win, but this was more than offset by the other two rinks losing by eight shots each. Overall it was a nine-shot loss against one of the stronger teams.

Also at home, the Division 3 team, with a couple of late call-ups, were strong enough to win against Pyramid Hill.

Thanks to the retired Jimmy Richards and Doug Hawke, who filled in at very short notice, after a couple of regulars had to withdraw because of illness.

Noel Robertson and his team of Lorraine Douglass, Steve Phillips and Stuart Robinson were 13-shot winners and led the way.

This margin was enough to win the Royal Hotel vouchers for this week – well done. Rob Malseed was an 11-shot winner and Judy McKerrow went down by 10. With a few absentees returning this week, hopefully the selectors’ job will be a bit easier

The midweekers got their season started last Wednesday and headed to Leitchville. They had wins on both rinks, with Judy McKerrow up by sev and Lorraine Ritchie up by three – a great start for this team.

The team for tomorrow is Judy McKerrow, Joyce Tuohey, Rosie Laughlin and Lorranie douglass, with team 2 Lorraine Ritchie, Sonia McLeish, Marlene Rawson and Allison Medson. They are heading to Barham to play at the new complex.

The fourth night of the National Milk Twilight Triples was played in warm conditions and 31 points was the winning score, from the team called AAAs.

Aaron Lancaster, Andrew Wilson and Steve Phillips were the recipients of the Choice Cut Butchers vouchers and they will be enjoying some quality meat this week. Runners-up were the Graeme Hayes Real Estate team of Graeme Hayes, Brett Hipworth and Dave Wood, with 29 points and 17 shots up, just in front of Lions, also with 29 points, but only five shots up.

The “chocolates” went to Misfits, led by Andrew Charles. The ladder, with one night to go, has the Lions on top with 105 points, followed by McAndo with 95, Deadlies – Ian on 93 and Tige’s Terrors on 89, rounding out the top four.

Thursday social had 16 participants and a game of 2-4-2 pairs was played. At the conclusion we had two combinations who won both games. Jimmy McLeish and John Duckworth finished in first place, winning by 15 shots, with Noel Robertson and Dale Spinks only winning by a total of five shots. The chocolates went to Frank Ritchie and Marlene Rawson.

Members are reminded that playing of club championship events will continue over the festive season, as will social bowls. All events have now closed and the draws will be done this week, with members encouraged to organise their matches and get them completed by the due dates.
