Bowls notes – Cohuna Golf

Cohuna Golf

PLAY for the week began on Monday evening with 22 sides lining up to contest the Nutrien Hams tournament. Competition was keen across both greens, with only two rinks managing all three games.

Best on the night was the Leitchville side of Graham Douglass, Laurie Crawford, John Walters and Graham Wilson, who scored just enough points to narrowly tip out Mike Hofman’s Cohuna side.

Thanks to all entrants, our valued sponsors and the ladies who catered.

In ladies’ competition the next day, fours was the game played. Cheryle’s rink of Linda, Glenda and Joan took the day’s honours with a sterling performance.

Let’s hope for an equally pleasant day weatherwise this week.

Wednesday night numbers continue to grow, with all enjoying a balmy evening. Top of the field were the trio of Stephen Henty, Jean Sutherland and Marilyn Flinders, who left all in their wake.

Hopefully we’ll get a ladder into our notes next week so all can see how well (or badly) all teams are performing.

Thursday jackpot pairs attracted a near-capacity field, all chasing the sizeable jackpot. Winners were Peter Bibby and regular trophy recipient Lee Nightingall, while the repechage vouchers went the way of Yvonne Eckhardt and Peter Coates.

Alan Porter then completed an act of magic, drawing out his own score (minus nine) to claim the $120. Unfortunately he and partner Barney McLoughlan had to share with Laurie Forde and Linda McManus, all going home with $30 each.

This Thursday will be the last event before the break, with a sausage sizzle after to wind up the series for this year.

Mentioning food, we are having a further barbecue on Friday 16th after practice before the final pennant game, and a snag or two on the 18th while watching the final of the club singles. Sounds like a good way to spend half a day.

Pennant results were mixed, with the ones recording a strong win over Cohuna due to a Jarred Hammond masterclass and a solid win by the Fletcher rink. On to the Barham carpet next.

The Whites tackled Kerang and would be pleased with the resulting 14-shot victory, set up by big wins to Bruce Morrison and Col Black, more than covering a loss by David Orr to Ed Fenton.

Their offsiders the Division 2/3 combination were weakened pre-match by illness, but showed tons of fight early against Barham, only to fall away badly in the second half. The Heard rink did best, rolling Charlie Bagg by two, but the numbers weren’t very flattering for the other two rinks. Let’s hope we can see all players available for the last couple of games before the break.

The threes did really well against Kerang, only missing out on a couple of rink wins by the odd shot or two. Thanks to Cliff Pearson (Cohuna) and Dave King (Kerang) for acting as subs. Rhonda was a winner, scoring a ham for Christmas in the raffle.

This Sunday we stage our major tournament for the year. There will be a host of quality bowlers attending from all over the state, well worth popping out for a look at the action during the day.
