Across the Greens

Cohuna

THE week started with our Nutrient Hams Tournament on Monday night. A good roll-up on such a cold evening.

The excited winners were Frank, Ray, Alison and Kaye H. Well done team, all set for Christmas.

Runners-up were Ken Dehne, Trevor Hore, Barb Hildebrand and Jon Henty. Congratulations. Thank you to the sponsors for their generous donations.

Tuesday saw the numbers down a little. Maybe they had not yet thawed out from the night before.

Winners were Ken (featuring a lot lately) Marg M, Kaye H and Bernie.

Pennant results midweek: Cohuna 1 8/62 d Barham 1 4/50, Cohuna 2 0/38 lost to Pyramid Hill 12/63, Cohuna 3 6/49 d Pyramid Hill 2/30.

Pennant results Saturday: Cohuna 1 d Wakool in a very tight game, Cohuna 2 0/40 lost to Kerang 2 12/75, Cohuna 3A 12/83 d Gunny-Golf 0/44, unfortunately Cohuna 3B had to forfeit again due to lack of numbers.

Don’t forget early start on Tuesday for social bowls. Our break-up for Christmas will start at 2pm for nibbles and drinks. Santa will also be paying a visit.

Wednesday after pennant our visitors are invited to lunch and a Christmas drink.

Saturday night after pennant we will be celebrating again. Don’t forget to put your on the list if attending.

This will help with catering. As this will be our final game for 2022 the Cohuna Bowls Club wishes everyone a safe and happy Christmas . See you in the new year.

TUESDAY ladies enjoyed their penultimate game before the break, with the winning rink made up of Joan, Rhonda, Irene and Elizabeth.

This week a shorter version will be played to enable all to watch the final of the ladies singles between Mary Rodwell and Yvonne Eckhardt.

To wind up the day all are adjourning to Kimmy’s for a Christmas lunch. Won’t be much housework done that afternoon!

It was also the second last night for our Wednesday night bowlers, with the top trio on the night being Neil Simmonds, Stephen Brown and John Prout.

This week we play under a Christmas theme, please somebody outdo Lennie, who’s a trend-setter every year. Supper courtesy of Max and Lee will round out the night.

Their ladder after six rounds is as follows: K.Hocking 36, G.Valentine and R.Farrant 26, M.Henshaw 20, S.Henty, D.Turnour and K.Currie all on 18, M.Simmonds 14, G.Payne 13, J.Henshaw 12, N.Simmonds 8 and K.Cramer 4.

Thursday pairs wound up their competition for the year, with all enjoying a sausage sizzle after play.

Winners were Frank Trezise and Mal Hogan, with the repechage going to, almost by dault after a couple of others drew, Jeff Holloway and Geoff Whiting. All being well we’ll crank up again on January 12, with all names afresh to Peter.

Saturday’s pennant saw two sides at home, one at Barham with an early start, and another travelling over to Pyramid Hill. The ones, over the river, were well served by Harrison Keely’s rink which won by 15, but the other two never came to grips with the green or opposition and were well beaten. A chance to bounce back next week being home to Leitchville.

The Division 2 Whites hosted Kerang and on the back of a big win by Col Black were too good for Barham.

David Orr gained points as well with Yvonne the only loss on the day. An excellent victory at a crucial time of the season.

Also at home was a depleted Division 3, who faced a tough task against a strong Cohuna line-up. Playing rinks of three is hard work and although all players, with help from subs from Pyramid, tried hard, the visitors won across all games.

The Navy group went across to Pyramid and also were struck with restructured sides due to absences and illness. The consistent Holloway quartet gained two points, but couldn’t cover losses to the other two sides and were well beaten overall.

Onto our Classic Fours on Sunday, and with 24 sides the greens were fairly buzzing. A few showers made conditions tricky early, but cleared after lunch allowing all to enjoy the day.

Lovely to see teams from as far afield as Golden Square, Donald and Maryborough, with players renewing old friendships or creating new ones.

After four games only two sides remained unbeaten, with two of the Clubarham directors handling the presentations.

The winners from Elmore being the entry of Phil Brock, skipped by Wayne Billet, runners-up were Brian Tuohey (Serpentine) and his Cohuna Golf mates, while third place went to Murray Downs’ Buck Lehmann who was the best of the three game winners.

Best game wins during the day went the way of John Exton and Frank Ritchie (shared), Steve Arthur, David Potter and Laurie Forde.

President Tucker thanked all who supported the day, major sponsor Clubarham, along with the Gunbower Hotel and Reid’s Plumbing, and made special mention of the excellent presentation of the catering during the event.

Only two games of pennant this week, with the Division 3B team having the bye. Division 1 hosted Gunbower at home and won on all rinks. Frank Ritchie’s team was the stand-out, winning by 21 shots against John Hogan. Together with Jim McLeish, Lorraine Ritchie and Alan Hird, they are the recipients of the Royal Hotel vouchers for this week – congratulations.

Lloyd Murray won 21/12 against Graeme L’Huillier and Howard McClelland came from behind to defeat Phil Davis by 3 shots 24/21. The maximum points gained have the Division 1 team in the top four at the moment.

The Division 2 team travelled to Barham for their first game at the new complex. However, it wasn’t a happy day with all rinks losing to the powerful Barham combination. Best performed for Golf was the Laurie Gray team who went down on the last end to Terry Keegan, losing by one shot.

As mentioned earlier, Division 3 had the bye. With the pennant season interrupted by floods and the State Championships, this team will only play 4 games before the Christmas break and maybe only 2 games afterwards as byes and maybe forfeits come in to play.

It will be a short playing season for players in this grade, when clubs are trying to encourage first year bowlers to play pennant. Maybe, the Playing Area Executive will look at this grade and make some alterations for the next season.

Midweek had a big win against Barham 4 on the new greens at the new complex. Lorraine Ritchie was best with a 17 shot win and Judy McKerrow was a 3 shot winner, so a 52/32 overall result. Maximum points has this combination in equal top position on the ladder, albeit, only two games have been completed – keep up the good work.

The team for this week, playing at home against Kerang 2, is Judy McKerrow, Joyce Tuohey, Rosie Laughlin and Lorraine Douglass, with Team 2, Lorraine Ritchie, Sonia McLeish, Marlene Rawson and Allison Medson

Our last night of the National Milk Pty Ltd Twilight Triples was played last Wednesday in windy and cool conditions. With the top four teams pitted against each other, an exciting finale was expected.

As it turned out, second placed McAndo defeated third placed Deadlies – Ian, to leapfrog Lions, who were top of the ladder, but were beaten by fourth placed Tige’s Terrors. This put McAndo in the premier position with 123 points, Tige’s Terrors were runners-up with 116 and Lions dropped to third place with 113.

At the presentation of trophies to the winning team members, Jim McLeish, Jeff Anderson and Bryce McLeish, President Gary Borg thanked all the players for their participation over the five week series, especially thanking our sponsors, the National Milk Pty Ltd company for their support, as well as Hall’s Hardware, Choice Cut Butchers and Gray’s Bakery.

Trophies for the second placed team members, Wayne “Tige” Neville, Laurie Gray and John Lynch were also made. The results on the night saw bottom team, the Duckworths defeated the Golfers and win the Choice Cut Butchers vouchers for this week with 30 points and 15 shots up, just in front of the Royal Hotel, also with 30 points, but only 11 shots up. Encouragement chocolates to the Golfers.

The next Wednesday evening series is the Ian “Squizzy” Taylor Memorial Barefoot Bowls which will commence on Wednesday 11th January 2023. Some teams have already committed to this series, with a couple of new teams being formed, so if you would like to play, please contact Aldo (0407 310762) or Gary Borg (0419 002024) to express your interest.

Thursday’s bowls saw 11 members playing, with Howard McClelland and Craig Hicks coming out winners with their 14 shots up to go with two wins. Runners-Up were Laurie Gray, Trevor Burmeister and John Duckworth with two wins and 3 shots up. Encouragement chocolates to Rob Malseed, Ronnie McKerrow and Dale Spinks.

The Men’s Club Championship is down to the last eight. The next round of matches need to be completed by January 8th. Other events – B Grade Singles, 100 Up, Pairs and Fours have all been drawn and are on the notice board. Play by dates will be strictly enforced, so please arrange to get games played in the allotted time frame.

Our annual Christmas Party is this Saturday night at the clubrooms. With all teams playing at home, it will be a great opportunity for all to stay on and celebrate the up-coming festive season. Members will be advised by text as to the exact nature of the evening, when the organising committee finalise the format.
