Across the Greens – Cohuna Golf

ON Tuesday the ladies had pairs scheduled for their social games, with club pairs being played in conjunction.

Winners on the day were Cheryle and Joan. The final of the ladies’ pairs is to be played on Tuesday afternoon.

In Midweek Pennant, Division 1 headed to Barham, where the home side held the upper hand most of the day, although the Eckhardt rink grabbed two points with a victory.

The twos travelled to Leitchville, and thanks to a strong win by Cheryle Baker’s rink, were able to claim a win. As more players have become available, this group is making a late run for the finals, perhaps just missing out.

The Wednesday night series is rapidly approaching finals time, with the stars of the penultimate match being Mike McLoughlan, Gary Valentine and Tracey Brealy. Ken Hocking and Ruff Farrant share ladder leadership at present, just ahead of Steve Henty and George Payne.

On Thursday participants in the pairs competition had to contend with a howling breeze, which made accurate bowling very difficult. Voucher winners were Peter and Cheryle (she had a big week), with the repechage winners being Craig and excited new bowler Steve Brown.

Phil and Wayne Cowan had 40 reasons to be pleased when their score for the day was drawn out as the jackpot number.

Saturday Pennant home-and-home games wound up with wins to three of our four sides.

The ones had a mini-final over at Kerang Golf against the second-placed club and won after a dour struggle all day. Bluey and Harrison both had victories, while Jarred just missed out against an in-form Frank Ritchie.

The Whites hosted the Kerang Golf second side and, as expected of a side in finals contention, won well on all rinks. Best performed, and Bower voucher winners, were Yvonne, Gavin, Tucker and John Brown, who finished nine ahead of Laurie Gray.

The Navy unit finished their season, almost pinching a win against finalist Cohuna 2 at Cohuna. Mike Henshaw’s rink won by five, not quite balancing out the eight-shot deficit of the other two rinks. Their final position on the ladder is not indicative of their year, as they have been chopped about with illness and selection issues as the other side understandably took precedence after mid-season.

The Gunny Golfers, however, did finish off in glory, despite needing some last-minute changes. Spearheaded by Linda McManus’ rink, up by 24, these guys and gals had plenty of shots to spare over the Cohuna 3 combination. Thanks to Tucker and Mal Hogan for putting a team together each week – the value to both clubs will be evident in the future.

At the weekend we host semi-final day for Divisions 1 and 2, a big task when two sides are engaged. Check with Tucker or Yvonne if you can be used in one capacity or another.

On February 19 our twilight mixed fours is filling nicely. There is still room for more teams however, and Cheryle Baker is taking entries.
