Across the Greens – Kerang Golf

OUR Midweek Pennant team has advanced to the grand final, with their win last Wednesday at Barham, but our Saturday Division 3 went down to Kerang 4 in the preliminary final, also at Barham.

Earlier in the week, our mixed championships were held with eight pairs participating. After three games of 2-4-2 pairs, there were three combinations who won all their games.

Using the points system, all three finished on 75 points, so a countback on shots up was used to find the eventual winner.

Graeme Hayes and Marlene Orr won their games by 16 shots in total, and that was enough for them to be the 2023 mixed champions.

In the runner-up position, with 13 shots up, were Mick Pors and Allison Medson, and Rob Malseed and Marlene Rawson had to settle for third place with 10 shots up.

The evening was completed with supper, provided by our hard working catering supervisor and her helpers. Thanks to all who made the night successful.

Wednesday saw the Midweek Pennant semi-finals being played at Barham. Our Division 2 team had a resounding win over Barham 2.

The final scores were Kerang Golf 52 and Barham 2, 23. Judy McKerrow’s rink won 26/9 and Lorraine Ritchie’s team won 26/14.

A great win by our girls, who now enter their third consecutive grand final. They will play either Barham 2 again or Kerang 2, who won their first semi-final.

On Saturday morning, Division 3 took on Kerang 4 in the preliminary final. With two close games, both decided on the last end, this team was not able to overcome the deficit of the other rink.

Judy McKerrow’s team was tied with one end to play and lost by the solitary shot, after the kitty was moved.

Noel Robertson’s team came from behind to hit the lead late in the game, only to lose the last two ends and finish one shot short.

Rob Malseed and team came up against a strong rink and were competitive for the majority of the game, but lost a couple of ends, at a critical time, when the kitty was moved and conceded multiple shots.

The overall result was a 68/51 win to Kerang 4, who now play Barham 4 in the grand final. Good luck to both teams.

Unfortunately, our second attempt at holding the triples last Thursday was again thwarted by the 39 degrees forecast.

Thank you to all who had entered, either our first try in January or this event, we will now re-program it in to the bowls program later in the year, probably late August or early September.

Wednesday night bowls has continued with the fifth night being played in warm conditions.

The winners were Crackerjacks, who had their captain (Aaron Lancaster) missing. Their score of 34 points was the highest of the season and Heath O’Brien, Shane Waddingham, Mick Fisher and Gary Borg, were the winners of the Choice Cut Butcher’s vouchers for this week.

Runner up were Hayes Real Estate with 33 points. They lead the ladder with 130 points from Crackerjacks on 121, Lake Charm Boat Club 112 and Royal Hotel on 105. Encouragement award this week to The Golfers, with only Jack Hewitt at presentations, to collect the chocolates.

Those who missed out were Terry Turvey, Mark Henderson and John Murphy.

Club matches are continuing and should all be finished by the due dates, as trophies have to be ordered and engraved for the presentation day on April 16.

Not long after that, we will be holding the annual, traditional Anzac Day triples with all proceeds going to Legacy.

Good luck to all teams who have made it to the Saturday pennant finals.
