Close bowls grand finals likely

KERANG is the venue chosen for this year’s grand finals, and with excellent greens and plenty of spectator room the day will undoubtedly be a great success.

In the Division 3 contest, Barham and Kerang meet for the first time after a season of the split Division 3 matches. Barham has been far too strong for most opponents during the season and, with three strong skippers in Goody Goodwin, Gary Wishart and Garry Cook, look good on paper.

Kerang, however, have a blend of experience and youth, and will be in the contest for a long while, doubly helped by playing on their home green.

The twos again feature a Kerang-Barham clash, with the Kerang team notching the first upset of the finals when they cleaned up Cohuna Golf in the semis.

They now face a confident Barham side, who have had two great wins in their finals campaign so far. Playing on the Kerang turf levels contest somewhat and, with old hands Ed Fenton, Lindsay Hein and Terry Nolen to steady the ship, the final margin will be minimal. Barham, with seemingly greater depth, may just scrape home.

Judging by their last meeting a fortnight ago, the Cohuna-Cohuna Golf game promises to provide everything expected of a Division 1 match. Cohuna skippers Frank Tonn, Rick Parr and Brian Bowles all head uniform rinks, while Golf’s Jarred Hammond, Harrison Keely and Rod Fletcher have had excellent seasons.

With team members pretty well matched across the board, the result may come down to whichever skippers can assert themselves on play. It’s too hard to select a winner, apart from the game itself.
