Across the Greens – Cohuna Golf

THE club’s Pennant season is now over, a mere two shots separating the teams last Saturday. In the last eight ends Cohuna closed the gap as two of our rinks were denied scoring opportunities time and again.

Harrison’s rink of Col Barton, Peter Bibby and Gavan Free collected the Bower vouchers with their 12-shot victory, but would have swapped them for a premiership medallion in a flash. It was not to be, but this did not prevent a great turnout on Saturday night, with plenty of replays and “what if” situations analysed. Well done to those who organised the night, the food provided was outstanding.

We now look ahead to staging Wednesday’s Midweek grand final. A similar hard-luck story to our team last Wednesday, with wins by two rinks again against Cohuna, not sufficient to carry the day. Good luck to Kerang and Cohuna who will play off in Division 1, while Kerang Golf and Kerang meet in the twos.

Bowls continued at home, with the ladies playing triples on Tuesday. Best performed on the day were the team of Mary, Joan and Deanne. This week we are supporting the pancake drive.

Wednesday night bowls identified the grand final teams, with Gary Valentine to play Ron Farrant for possession of the Ron Stanton Shield, while George Payne will take on Max Simmonds for second-four honours. All are very welcome with supper compliments of Lee and Max to round out the night. Best winners were Gary Valentine, Mike McLoughlan and Tania Brearley.

Thursday pairs resumed after a heat-out, with all players keen to line up for a game. Best of the two-game winners was the pairing of Linda McManus and Jean Sutherland, while the repechage awards went the way of John Prout and Geoff Whiting. The jackpot of minus 4 wasn’t claimed and will be out to $50 this week.

A shout out to Ron Eckhardt and team, who last week won Swan Hill’s Classic on the Murray for the third time. This was a great achievement, knowing the standard of bowlers competing. Presentation night and dinner on March 9 is the main local event on the horizon. Names, if not in already need to be lodged post haste.
