Cohuna

YET another busy week at the “Bollo”, with 20-plus players for social bowls on Tuesday and club matches being played as well.

Winners this week were Kaye C, Marian and Corale. Well done ladies.

The winners of the men’s club pairs for 2022-23 were Trevor Dehne and Wayne Brooks, who defeated Brian Bowles and Jeff Reade. Congratulations to Trevor and Wayne.

Friday night was busy as usual with quite a few visitors. Ray, Kaye and Heather did a great job, with the bar kept very busy also. Thanks to anyone who helped out on the night.

Saturday Brain and Wayne represented the NDPA at Murray Downs in the finals of the Regional Pairs. Although they were beaten in the semi-final they played some fantastic bowls throughout the game. Well done to you both.

Congratulations to those from the NDPA who won their matches to now go on the play in the State games.

On Wednesday, Rhonda and Alison will play in the State Pairs in Bendigo. The club wishes them all the very best.

Also next weekend our Midweek and Saturday Division 1 Pennant winners will play in the regionals at Barham to see if they can move on to the State finals in May. These will be held in Moama. Good luck to all players.

Still plenty of club matches to be finalised, let’s keep things moving. Lots of tournaments around, see Terri or Keith.

The Autumn Tournament is just around the corner. Bryan has plenty of jobs available, so if you can help out let him know and offer your services. Pie and Soup starts April 13 at Leitchville, so get your teams organized.

A MUCH quieter week now that pennant has finished, but culminating in a terrific presentation dinner on Thursday.

The ladies enjoyed a balmy Tuesday, with a near full house playing triples, and then pausing to watch the Hundred Up final. Rhonda Bibby claimed this title ahead of Yvonne Eckhardt, while Jean, Elizabeth and Margot claimed the daily awards.

The Wednesday night players enjoyed their final night playing Canadian Pairs, a fun event for those who haven’t come across it before. Our organisers Winko and Di managed to come up with winners after the two games, with Bernie and Glenda along with Malcolm and Steve getting the final prizes for the season.

Thanks to all who attended so regularly, it’s not that long until October when we’ll begin again.

Thursday was the penultimate game for our Jackpot pairs, as Country Week will rob us of most helpers in a fortnight. The best of the two game winners were Lee Nightingall and the consistent Linda McManus, while John Prout and Lawrie Forde took home the repechage envelopes.

Plus 14 was the jackpot number, and not claimed so next week the final pot of $70 will be drawn until won. Craig will be able to join us as fortunately the redback in his hat wasn’t in an angry mood. Get your names in early to help finish up this series in style.

Members are now chasing the tournament circuit, with teams in the coming week heading to Wakool, Quambatook, Leitchville and Boort. Mick, Gary and Col have scored early with a great win in the Barham Classic. Good luck to all and hopefully we can share some further successes in our notes next week.

A terrific attendance of some 70 members, partners and friends turned up to celebrate another successful season at Cohuna Golf Bowls. Although no premierships were recorded this year, we had three sides contest finals, and a good representation of players prominent in Northern District events.

John Keely, chairperson for the night, introduced trophy winners assisted by Jean Sutherland and Irene Trezise. Blocks of awards were fitted in between courses of the catering by Ben North and crew, a treat in itself.

Guests on the night included Golf Club president Jenny Goulding, members from Gunbower of the Gunny Golfers squad, and Bernie Mawson, our oldest active member. Ron Eckhardt supplied an ongoing pictorial history of club events and personalities on the big screen, which attracted a lot of interest during the night.

Major trophy winners:

Men’s Champion: Gary Easton. Runner-up: Craig Whittaker.

Men’s Pairs: Pat Quinn and Jon Henty. Runners-up: Col Barton and Michael Carmody.

BACK down to earth for our premiership Division 2 Midweek team after the long celebrations and now only social bowls and tournaments to attend.

Members are asked to support our neighbouring clubs’ tournament days to reciprocate the support received when we hold our events.

The last night of the Ian “Squizzy” Taylor Barefoot Bowls was held last Wednesday night. It was great to have family members Lisa and “Fonzy” on hand to present the Memorial Shield to the winners at the completion of the series.

After being on top, or near to, Lake Charm Boat Club and Hayes Real Estate met in the last game to decide who would be the recipient of this coveted prize. Hayes Real Estate proved too strong, winning a close game, and after the points were tallied they ended the season with 183 points to the Lake Charm Boat Club on 183.

Team members Graeme Hayes, Nathan Hipworth, Dave Wood and Mick Pors (sub for Brett Hipworth) accepted the shield from “Fonzy” after he made his “maiden” speech, and will now join the Royal Hotel as winners of the Ian “Squizzy” Taylor Memorial Shield.

Team members of the runners-up were Jim and Bryce McLeish, Greg McNeill and Trevor Linton. Final ladder positions were, Hayes Real Estate 183, Lake Charm Boat Club 180, Crackerjacks 174, Lions 167, Royal Hotel 165, Hirdy’s Buslines 152, Stace’s Mob 142, Team Fourteen 139, Taylor Ashton Painting 128, Tige’s Terrors 124, Spinsky Mac 103 and The Golfers 71.

The winners of the night’s event was the Hirdy’s Buslines team of Alan Hird, Mark Higgins, Erin Byrne and “Chic” Dee Junior, with 31 points, just a point in front of Hayes Real Estate on 30 points. Encouragement award to the Golfers. Thanks to our sponsors and supporters for their contribution to our Wednesday night bowls. These being Hall’s Hardware, Gray’s Bakery and Choice Cut Butchers.

Thursday Bowls was attended by 12 members who played in pairs, playing five games of four ends, so each pair played all the other combinations. At the conclusion, there wasn’t a combination who won all their games. With four wins and a tie, Ronnie McKerrow and Bryce McLeish took out top honours, and “Tige” Neville and “Curly” Curtis were runners-up.

Encouragement chocolates to Noel Robertson and Craig Hicks. All voted the format change a popular version of social bowls and voted to have a similar format again in the future, if the numbers permit.

Coming events: Our presentation day will be held on Sunday, April 16, with a game of bowls, followed by the presentation of trophies won during the season. Not long after that, we will conduct our Anzac Day Triples Tournament, so start organising your teams for this popular annual event.
