Across the greens

Cohuna

TUESDAY’S winners at social bowls were Nigel, who was visiting from Tasmania, along with Ally, Jules and Reg.

With perfect weather and perfect greens, how could anyone not bowl well?

Thanks to Greg and Keith for curating and to the 37 players who participated.

It was great to see lots of visitors again.

Saturday’s social winners were Mike, Ally and Noelene. Ally is obviously hitting form at the right time of the year.

Well done to the team who were the only ones to win two games, with a total of 54 points.

It was a perfect day weather-wise for bowls. Spring has well and truly arrived.

Thanks to Keith and Greg for consistently producing very fast greens for the 35 players to show their skills on.

Big money will be available this week as the jackpot did not go off.

Kerang Golf

IT is great to see some of our northern travellers back in the fold and others due to return in the next week or so.

Over the winter period, social bowls has continued on Thursdays and Sundays with good numbers attending on most days, obviously a bit dependent on the weather.

There have been some improvements made around the bowling greens over this time with new edges being completed or nearly completed on the southern ends of both greens. Thanks to the volunteers who helped Ashley McKnight with the concreting and Tony Hall with the laying of the new “grass”.

All this was done under the careful eyes of Laurie Gray, Alan Hird and other members, and it looks a treat, with the painting of the concrete completed over the weekend. Congratulations to all involved.

Congratulations to the CluBarham Suns, who competed in the Victorian Bowls League 2 at Barham at the weekend.

The team played in section C of this event, which is in only its second year, just missing the finals by one point.

Congratulations to Barham for showcasing their facilities and for supporting a team in the series.

In the future, all clubs in our playing area will benefit from this superb facility in our area, with a roof being built over the outside green in the next 12 months.

Our Thursday bowls was played in cold conditions, with 14 hardy competitors braving the conditions.

After the regulation two games, there was only one combination who won both games.

That pairing of Bryce McLeish and Barry Theobald were the recipients of the first prize.

The runners up were Rosie Laughlin and Howard McClelland, who had a big win in the first game and a loss by one shot in the second to be the best of the rest. Chocolates to Allison Medson and Marie Miller.

At Sunday bowls on Father’s Day there were 14 players playing in warm sunshine.

After the normal two games, there were two combinations who won both.

Mick Pors and Joycey Tuohey were the winners with 15 shots up, only threeshots better than a triple of Kevin Chase, Marlene Rawson and Howard McClelland who took out the runners up prize. The “encouragement” chocolates to Allison Medson (again) and Bryce McLeish.

The playing area Pennant draws have now been completed for both Saturday and Midweek. Saturday starts on October 7 and Midweek on Wednesday, October 4. Kerang Golf will again have teams in all three Saturday Pennant divisions as well as a team in Midweek Division 2.

September is a busy month for all clubs, with Pennant commencing in early October and Kerang Golf has plenty planned in the lead-up to the season, starting with opening day and annual general meeting on Sunday, September 17, followed by the President versus Captains Day on the following Sunday.

The following day, we are the club of choice for a visiting group of bowlers from Geelong, with a barbecue lunch and a social game of bowls.

Our members will join the 41 players on their trip for a day of fun and camaraderie.

The Geelong contingent will have visited “Sheppo’s Way” before arriving at Kerang Golf. Thanks to Frank Ritchie for liaising with the Geelong team and organising the day.

The following Friday is the annual Kerang Golf versus Lake Boga practice match. Selectors will be contacting all members to find out their availability for all the previously mentioned events.

Not long after the Pennant season commences, our Wednesday evening twilight triples will commence, so teams are encouraged to start planning for this new competition.

If anyone would like to play in this casual, evening format, you are most welcome to contact any Kerang Golf Bowls member or Aldo on 0407 310 762 and you will be made most welcome.

Leitchville

THE club hopes that everyone has had a good break as it’s now time to wipe the dust off those bowls for those that have not been bowling over the winter break and get them ready for the coming Pennant season.

Pennant practice starts on Thursday, September 14 at 4pm.

Theclub is holding a RSA course on that day at 1pm for members and anyone in the Leitchville community interested in doing the course. Contact Tony Cantwell on 0419 369 821.

We will be having a practice match against Pyramid Hill on Sunday, September 17, at 12.30pm at Pyramid Hill and Pennant uniform is to be worn.

Please place names on noticeboard or call selector Ken Dehne on 0438 200 868.

The club opening day and practice match against Pyramid Hill at Leitchville is on Sunday, September 24. Names should in by noon for a 12.30pm start, and Pennant uniform is to be worn. Visitors are most welcome. Place names on list on noticeboard or call president Graham Douglas on 0409 567 428 or Ken.

Subs are now due and can be paid to Lawrie Crawford or Heather Crichton.
