Cohuna

WITH the season stating to get into full swing, there are many tournaments in the district for members to enter.

Details of these tournaments will be posted on the noticeboard at the clubhouse. Submit entries through Terri Hancock or Keith Foreman.

Pennant teams for midweek pennant are posted at the club and are also on Facebook.

In midweek competition, Cohuna is fielding two Division 1 teams (Cohuna 1 and 2) and one Division 2 team (Cohuna 3).

Good luck to both our Saturday and midweek teams for the coming year.

Tuesday’s social bowls winners were Jules Mastin, Merle Richardson, Marg Main and Rob Milesi, who had a great win with 55 points.

Mike Hoffman’s team were runners-up with 53 points. Thirty-two players enjoyed perfect bowling conditions again.

Saturday numbers were down to 15 players on a very warm afternoon. Winners were Marty, Alison Ainger and Joe Gauchi, who were the only two-game winners. Apart from the football, depleting our numbers were a group of local bowlers who enjoyed the hospitality offered by the Murtoa Bowling Club for a few days.

A great time was enjoyed by all.

Happy Birthday to Jacki Walsh on her 80th Birthday. Best wishes from all of us at the Kerang Bowling Club.

Last Tuesday, Helen McBain, Barbara Williams and Sherylyn Barnes-Randell played in the ladies tournament at Murray Downs. Despite having the highest score in the first game, they missed out overall. Well done, ladies.

Trevor Pocock, Barb Williams, Gayle Teasdale and Peter Waters played in Boort on Sunday. They won three out of four games but the four-game winners took out the prize money. They did, however, get a prize for the highest score in the third game.

Thank you to Joyce Boyd who has been working on our club’s booklet in trying circumstances. We thank you so much, Joyce, for all your work in putting all the information together for our members. We send our very good wishes to Richard and we all hope that he recovers soon. Preparations are almost ready for the booklets to be printed.

A reminder at Kerang Bowling Club on Friday, Graeme Hugo will be playing songs from all your favourite country artists from 7.30pm to 10.30pm. Entry is $20 per person, BYO nibbles, bar facilities available.

Kerang Golf

WELL done to Collingwood. Now we are in to bowls pennant season, with midweek starting tomorrow and Saturday for the weekend teams. Good luck to all clubs for a successful pennant season.

The busy week started last Monday with our visit from the Geelong bowls region.

After a tour of the town and a visit to Shepo’s Whey at Tragowel, with tour director Jim McLeish in charge, the 42 visitors then joined with local members for a barbecue lunch and a mini tournament of three games.

At the conclusion, there were only two combinations who won all three games.

A team consisting of local Rob Fabry together with visitors Russell Morrow and Brian Bennett were the winners with 75 points, just two in front of the team of Barry Theobald from Kerang and travellers John Milton and Tony Long with 73 points.

The best last game winner was presented to our own Jim McLeish and Craig Hicks, with Ron Coles and John Philgren helping score 24 points with nine shots up.

There were five other teams on 24 points. The encouragement award was presented by the Geelong Friendship Bowls Trip organiser, Ian Norsworthy, and included inscribed wine glasses, as well as the normal chocolates.

The recipients were Sonia McLeish, with visitors Alex Walsh, Ken Baker and Daryl Biviano.

Overall, a great goodwill visit and everyone enjoyed the friendship and camaraderie that exists between all bowls participants from different clubs, from many varied clubs. The Geelong contingent were playing at Barham on Tuesday, Cohuna Golf on Wednesday and Wakool on Thursday, before returning to Geelong on Friday.

A great crowd of 25 players turned out for Thursday social and after the regulatory two games, there was only one multiple winner.

The combination of Rosie Laughlin and Sonia McLeish proved too strong for their opposition and ran out easy winners. It has been a good week for Sonia, as she teamed with Carol Pay and Lorraine Ritchie to win the Murray Downs midweek tournament, on Tuesday.

The runners-up were a triple consisting of Frank Ritchie, Craig Hicks and Dale Spinks. They had a tied game and a win by nine shots, so won the countback from Allison Medson and Barry Teobald. Encouragement chocolates to Lorraine Ritchie and Tanicka King.

Our practice match against Lake Boga was played on Friday in warm conditions with each club represented by nine rinks.

After a sausage sizzle lunch, play began and after the 21 ends of pennant play, Kerang Golf came out winners again, winning six of the nine contests.

The final score of 214 shots to 159 meant Lake Boga president Grant Davies presented the challenge shield to Kerang Golf president Jim McLeish.

Jimmy thanked the Boga team for coming to Kerang Golf for this annual challenge and congratulated all involved in making it a successful day, especially the afternoon tea enjoyed by all the participants.

The best performed rink for Kerang Golf was that of Howard McClelland, Andrew Charles, Marlene Orr and Alan Hird.

They received the Lake Boga coffee mugs as a memento of their win. For Lake Boga, Ian Ross, Ray Leach, Sally Meehan and Jenny Redfern were their best performed rink and received Kerang Golf glasses to mark their success.

Sunday bowls was celebrated by Magpie Ronnie McKerrow and 15 other members and for a change a game of fours was played.

After three short games, only one combination won all three – Laurie Gray, Allison Medson, Howard McClelland and Magpie Ronnie. As it was our last Sunday of social bowls, all other players received a chocolate treat, to celebrate the end of the football season.

Congratulations to Frank Ritchie and Ritchie Murray on reaching the semi-finals of the state pairs at Cohuna Golf on Sunday.

They now tackle Pat Quinn and Jason Heard, from Cohuna Golf, next Sunday for a place in the final against Glen Faull and Damien Patterson, from Barham.

Lorraine Ritchie and Sonia McLeish lost their first game against Jean Fairchild and Jenny Laursen, from Barham.

Pennant practice will be held on Tuesdays at 4pm and also on Fridays, from 4pm onwards for a roll-up.

Teams for Saturday will be selected on Tuesday evenings, so if you are not available, the selectors would be happy to know before selecting the teams, asking members to use the unavailable list on the noticeboard.

Our triples tournament is scheduled for Thursday, October 12. Entries are being taken by Aldo (0407 310 762) or Frank Ritchie (0409 439 029). It would be great to see some more entries for this tournament, which was postponed from February because of the hot temperatures forecast for our selected days.

All Kerang Golf members are reminded that the Royal Hotel have again taken on the sponsorship of our Saturday pennant teams with the weekly vouchers for the best performed rink.

The club is indebted to Rob and Jo Fisher for their continued support of our club. Our first Royal night will be held later in October, so members are asked to join in the festivities at the Royal Hotel by putting their names on the list on the noticeboard.
