Kerang Golf
The first games of Saturday Pennant resulted in excellent wins in divisions 1 and 2 for Kerang Golf. Division 3 had the bye.
Division 1 went to Wakool and came home victorious, with Ritchie Murray’s rink leading the way with a 17 shot win over Ian Main. This team, with Rob Fisher, Brett Hipworth and Ian Charles, took out the Royal Hotel vouchers for the best winning rink on the day. Howard McClelland won by 10 shots over Robert Walker and Frank Ritchie’s team had a close battle with Guy Treweek’s to finish 3 shots up.
Division 2 travelled to Cohuna and came home victorious with two rinks winning. The Graeme Hayes team led the way with a resounding win over Kenneth Strachan by 15 shots, Laurie Gray’s rink won by 5 shots over Noel Hosking. Carol Pay was down by 6 to Mary Meredith. A great start for Division 2.
The new format for pennant created a lot of conversation among bowlers, with the longer playing time and the afternoon tea break making the day stretch to nearly 6pm. This seemed to be courtesy of the break, which the playing area Match Committee stipulated it be for 15 minutes only, but was certainly a lot longer than that. It will be interesting to see if there is enough “rumblings” at club level, for the match committee to see fit to discuss.
As mentioned, Division 3 had a bye in the first round, but Noel Robertson, Stuart Robinson and Craig Hicks travelled across the river to help the Pyramid Hill Division 3 team and had an enjoyable time playing at the Barham complex.
The Midweekers were washed out by the Tuesday night rains, so have to wait until today to get a start. The team is Judy McKerrow, Rosie Laughlin, Joyce Tuohey and Lorraine Douglass, with Team 2, Lorraine Ritchie, Sonia McLeish, Marlene Rawson and Allison Medson. A home game with Cohuna as opponents, with a 9am arrive for a 9.30am start.
Last Thursday, 20 members and visitors played social, with 2-4-2 Pairs being the format. The winning combination was Rob “Curly” Curtis and Ronnie McKerrow who finished a whopping 26 shots up on their opponents, to take out the major prize. Runners-up were Wayne “Tige” Neville and Jason Heard (Cohuna Golf) who finished 21 shots up. Missing out was Howard McClelland and Craig Hicks who could only manage 17 shots up in their two wins. Encouragement chocolates to Sherilyn Barnes-Randall and Dale Spinks.
The match committee have put all the club event entry forms on the noticeboard. The Club Championship Singles entries close on October 22, and the others follow after that date. Get your names in, so you don’t miss out. Draws will be done immediately after entries close.
The Terry White Triples Tournament is on Thursday. There is still room for a couple more teams, so contact Aldo (0407 310762) or Frank Ritchie (0409 439029) if you wish to play.
Our Twilight Triples is scheduled to start on Wednesday, October 18. All teams from last year have been contacted, but if you haven’t been, talk to Frank or Aldo or any Golf Bowls member. This is a fun, three bowl triples format, with encouragement for teams to introduce new bowlers to the game.
Members are also reminded of the Peg Coad Day, to be held on Thursday, October 26, with the entry sheet and details on the noticeboard.
Our first Royal Night for the season is on Saturday, October 21. We need names on the sheet on the noticeboard, so we can book numbers in.
Meanwhile, congratulations to Frank Ritchie and Ritchie Murray who won the State Pairs title at Cohuna Golf on Sunday, beating Pat Quinn and Jason Heard (Cohuna Golf) in the semi final, 22/11 and then beating Glenn Faull and Damien Patterson (Barham) by 10 shots in the final. The Ladies was won by Cohuna pair, Val Dehne and Barbara Hildebrand.
Also, on Sunday, a team travelled to Wakool for their Star Day Tournament. The team didn’t figure in the winner’s area, but President Jimmy won a box of chocolates in the raffle, so he had a successful day.
Kerang
Saturday Pennant heralded the start of the 2023-24 Pennant Season with our teams gracing the greens in their new uniforms thanks to the generous sponsorship of Kerang Steam-n-Clean and Kerang Sports and Entertainment Venue. Thanks to the sub committee of Jacqui, Dale, Mark and Chelsea in pulling off a logistical coup in getting everyone set up for the first day of play.
Division 1 got off to a promising start with an 8 shot (72-64) win over Cohuna 1 and Division 2 with an even closer finish of 1 shot up on Cohuna Golf with the team grasping victory from the jaws of defeat with a 6 shot score on the last end of Ross Frantz’s rink to win 73-72. In Division 3, both teams gained 2 points by winning only 1 rink each.
Kerang 3 lost a close match 57-61 to Barham 4, but Kerang 4 lost by a larger margin 58 – 87 against Cohuna 3. More practice needed by the sound of that! Teams for next week will be on the board at the club after selection. Practice is on Monday from 4.30pm. Club and Northern district books are at the club so make sure you collect one of each. The new roster system of setting up to host our opponents might take a bit of fine tuning. The information is printed on the notice on the front of the kitchen cupboards. Division 1 is on duty next Saturday so please do your part in sharing the set up and clearing away at the end of the day. It was good to see Ed Fenton at the club on Saturday, we hope he will soon be back playing. We hear that Fred Schmidt is keen to be back playing after a stint in hospital, it is hard to keep a good man down. See you soon Fred.
The farmers among us were smiling with the rain last week but it meant the sharing of points for the first round of midweek Pennant on Wednesday.

Another cancelled day for Black Duck Triples last Tuesday due to the rain so the good news is that the $282 jackpot is still unclaimed. If you don’t have your name in, ring through on 5452 1194 before 11am. and be there for a 12.30pm start.
Good bowling to everyone.
Cohuna
A very mixed week of weather, games and results for the first week of midweek and Saturday Pennant.
Firstly, the rain washed out play for Tuesday’s social bowls and mid week Pennant, but the rain was appreciated by many others especially the farmers.
Friday night saw a good crowd for tea with visitors from Mt Gambier and Casterton and a good time was had by all. The club also welcomed new members Gayle and Colin Anderson, two locals who have returned to Cohuna in their retirement. And on Saturday for Pennant, the Anderson clan were every well represented with Gayle and Colin, dad Gordon, and young Clayton all playing for Cohuna. A very proud day for Gordon and we wish the Anderson family many more happy bowl’s days at our club.
The results for Saturday’s Pennant games are as follows: Divisions 1, 2 and 3B lost but Division 3A won. There were a lot of bowlers filling in for absences and the club would like to thank those bowlers who stepped up for the day. Lets hope for better results next week.
Sunday saw the grand final of the State Ladies pairs at Cohuna Golf.
The winners were Val Dehne and Barb Hidebrand from Cohuna Bowls Club who defeated Jean Fairchild and Jenny Laursen from Barham.
Also on Sunday, the team of Frank Tonn, Ray Storey, Ann Hipwell and Marian Smith won the Star Day event at Wakool.

Northern District
ON a glorious afternoon at Cohuna Golf, the finals of both the men and ladies sections of the State Pairs (Northern District Division) were decided last Sunday.
The men’s final was played between Glenn Faull and Damien Robertson (Barham) and the Ritchie Murray-Frank Ritchie combination (Kerang Golf). The latter pairing had previously overcome Pat Quinn and Jason Heard (Cohuna Golf) to reach the decider.
Showing all the experience, Murray and Ritchie continually drew praiseworthy close counters, forcing their opponents to then play weighted shots, not always with much success.
After an engrossing tussle the Kerang Golf duo came away late to claim the title, and will represent the district at Regional level at Murray Downs.
The ladies’ section was down to the grand final, between Jean Fairchild and Jenny Laursen (Barham) and the Cohuna pair of Val Dehne and Barbara Hildebrand.
The quartet traded shots throughout the whole 15 ends, with a winner uncertain until the final bowl. In the end, after a match enjoyed by a good-sized gallery of supporters, the Cohuna players finished three shots ahead, and will also head to Murray Downs later in the year.
The Northern District executive thanks Cohuna Golf for hosting the event on their excellent greens, Yvonne for umpiring for the two days and all players for their participation. The State Singles is the next event, beginning this Sunday at Kerang Golf.
