Kerang
THE second round of NDPA Pennant was played in cold, windy and at times gusty conditions. At least it wasn’t wet.
Kerang 1 had a tough assignment against a team that may have a big say on the outcome at season’s end in Barham 1.
To our credit, our gutsy combatants stuck thick for three-quarters of the day, but that’s where Barham slipped into another gear and laid our hopes to rest.
After a great start, Team Pocock was reeled in and overtaken by Lunghusen, who won by eight shots. Team Hancock had a battle on their hands from the outset and couldn’t quite bridge the gap to go down by 12 shots to Barham pin-up boy in Harker. The last rink in Team Teasdale had a tidy win over Mansbridge by 5 shots after being an even tussle for the duration. Two points are better than none. Kerang down by 15 overall at home.
Kerang 2 got three rinks up against Cohuna 2, which some pundits would have doubted halfway through play.
Team Pascoe skipped out to a 13-shot lead at one stage and snuck home by five in the end against Meredith.
Team Frantz was fairly tight all day and the result fell our way to the tune of one shot.
Team Hein shook last week off and came out on top with a win by 12 shots from McGann.
Maximum points and an 18-shot victory overall.
Kerang 3 locked horns with Wakool on their turf and walked away silver medallists by two shots despite winning two rinks.
Team Coobs had the bigger winning margin, getting over the Grant rink by three shots.
Team Sutherland snuck in by one and Team Byrne got knocked over by Lolicato to the tune of six shots.
Some tight games in the Southern Riverina going by the cards and no doubt in true Wakool fashion, would have a jovial atmosphere presented along with the jukebox.
Kerang 4 had the Bye.
The raffle winners for the three meat trays were Nick Jarman, Jason Brown and Brian Mansbridge. All are Division 1 players so the other divisions need to dig deeper into their pockets and represent.
The teams will be selected on Saturday after play, so please hang around and have a drink or two, wailing at the wall. The teams are as follows:
Kerang 1 v Wakool away: D. Hancock (s), J. Jackson, J. Brown, Kerry Watts. T. Pocock (s), M. Hamon, Kim Watts, I. Roberts. K. Teasdale (s), J. Wilson, C. Fisher, A. Fagg.
Kerang 2 v Cohuna Golf 3 away: S Pascoe (s), J. Pay, D. Murray, R. Pascoe. L. Hein (s), M. Credlin, Macquire, T. Nolan. R Frantz (s), D. Randell, B Theobald, D. Monaghan.
Kerang 3 v Cohuna Golf 4 home: M. Sutherland (s), B. McBain, G. Morris, G. Fenton. G. Teasdale (s), W. Neville, D. Jenkins, P. Basile. M. Coobs (s), H. McBain, A. Marshall, B. Williams.
Kerang 4 v Pyramid Hill home: A. Davies (s), M Theobald, D Frantz, M Miller. M. Fowler (s), J. Adams, M. Infantino, C. Adams. J. Jenkins (s), B. Roche, D. Hall, Y. Summers.
A gentle reminder that practice is on Monday evenings. Our numbers have been relatively good so let’s keep that energy and set ourselves up for a good year. If anyone would like something of interest put in the notes, you need only contact the house scribe for it to be included.
Thought for the day: Early wins are worth their weight in gold at the other end of the season.
Kerang Golf
THE second round of both Midweek and Saturday Pennant has been completed, with the Wednesday team coming away with a win on both rinks against Cohuna 3.
Lorraine Ritchie’s team led all game, opening up a big break early on and was never headed. An 11-shot win led the way and Judy McKerrow’s rink, after a close tussle early on, forged ahead late in the game, to register a nine-shot win.
The team for tomorrow, playing at Barham against Barham 2, is Judy McKerrow, Rosie Laughlin, Joyce Tuohey and Lorraine Douglass, and Team 2 is Lorraine Ritchie, Sonia McLeish, Marlene Rawson and Allison Medson.
Congratulations to Lorraine Ritchie, Allison Medson and Marlene Orr who have been selected to play for the Northern District Playing Area, in the Round Robin at Murray Downs in November. Frank Ritchie has also been selected to play in the Men’s team.
On Saturday, both Division 1 and Division 2 played at home, in very windy conditions.
The Division 1 team played Gunbower and had a resounding win over a team that had a few absentees.
Howard McClelland’s rink of Andrew Charles, Marlene Orr and Alan Hird were the winners of the Royal Hotel vouchers with a 30-shot win, which included an eight. Frank Ritchie’s team won by 28 shots and Ritchie Murray had a close tussle all afternoon, to eventually win by seven shots.
Division 2 were pitted against Cohuna Golf 2 and at the afternoon tea break, the scores were very close. The Cohuna Golf team eventually drew away on two rinks to record a 30 shot overall win. Carol Pay’s team was the shining light, with a 10-shot win.
Division 3 headed to Pyramid Hill and with a few absentees, played with 11 players. The Pyramid Hill team also only had 11 players. Notwithstanding that, a great game ensued, with the Golf team getting over the line, with two winning rinks and 17 shots overall.
Marlene Rason was the biggest winner, with a 13-shot victory, followed by Judy McKerrow with a 10-shot success. Noel Robertson was down by six shots.
A five-star spread for afternoon tea was enjoyed by all who stayed to witness the presentation of life membership to Lionel Mann – a well deserved honour. Congratulations, Lionel.
Last Thursday, our Terry White Chemist Triples Tournament finally graced the greens after a hiatus caused by COVID, floods and twice by the heat over the last 18 months.
Our October date was threatened by cold and rainy weather, but the resilience of the attending bowlers ensured the event was completed, much to the delight of our friends from Pyramid Hill.
A Cohuna Golf team of Bruce Morrison, Pat Quin and Lee Sutherland were the winners with a total of 78 points, after a strong last-game win, just pipping the combine team of Ian Howard, Rick Parr (Cohuna) and Howard McClelland, who also scored 78 points but lost on the second countback.
The best last-game winner was a late entry from Noel Robertson, Rob Fabry and Robert “Fonzy” Taylor, who won their last game by eight shots.
The catering committee supplied a sumptuous afternoon tea at the completion of the bowls.
Our Twilight Triples will start tomorrow night. All teams from last year have been contacted, but if you haven’t been, talk to Frank or Aldo or any Golf Bowls member. This is a fun, three-bowl triples format, with encouragement for teams to introduce new bowlers to the game.
The Royal Hotel night is this Saturday – members are asked to place their names on the sheet on the noticeboard, so we can book in the correct number. As well, members are asked to enter the various club events that are conducted during the season. All the entry sheets are on the noticeboard, with the Club Championship Singles entries closing this coming Sunday.
The annual Peg Coad Day is coming up on Thursday next week. This is always a great day, with teams being skipped by ladies. It’s not too late to enter. Teams to Judy McKerrow, if you wish to play.
Late news again this week. The Playing Area State Singles was conducted at Kerang Golf on Sunday and this year’s winners are Som Pascoe (Kerang), who defeated Jean Fairchild (Barham/Wakool) in the Ladies and Brody Harker (Barham) who defeated Brian Mainsbridge (Barham) in a high-quality men’s game.
Cohuna
TWENTY-seven bowlers turned up for social bowls last Tuesday, on a beautiful afternoon, and the greens were very fast.
Two-game winners were the team of Ian Howard, Maurie Marnie, Marian Smith and Kaye Holmes with 53 points.
Also winning two games was Noddy Hosking’s team, who had to be content with runners-up.
Midweek Pennant kicked off on Wednesday after being called off the previous week due to rain.
All three rinks of the Cohuna Division 1 Team 2 lost to Barham 1. No results available for the Division 1 Cohuna 1 team, or the Division 2 Cohuna 3 team.
Saturday’s Pennant results saw Division 2 Cohuna 2 team beaten in all rinks by Kerang 3 at Kerang.
Team manager Brian Main commented that the games were close and all rinks were very competitive. Kerang’s greens were very fast and in excellent condition.
At times the wind was difficult and affected the bowls.
It would be appreciated if all team managers could pass on their team’s pennant results in time for publication.
