Cohuna
LAST Tuesday’s social bowls was played in perfect sunny conditions, with 30 players attending.
The winners were Mary Meredith, Kay Currie and Rob Wilson.
The following day, Midweek Pennant play was played.
Division 1: Cohuna 1 d Barham 1 in all three rinks by a margin of 40 shots. Cohuna 2 went down to Pyramid Hill by 11 shots, winning two out of the three rinks but not by a big enough margin.
Division 2: Cohuna 3 d Kerang 2 in closely fought games, getting up by six shots.
Thanks to Bev Berry for the following results for Saturday pennant:
Division 1: Barham 1 8/76 d Cohuna 1 4/72.
In Division 2, Cohuna 2 won all three rinks fairly convincingly, scoring 12/95 to Cohuna Golf 3 0/52.
In Division 3 the two Cohuna teams played each other. Cohuna 3 10/82 won over Cohuna 4 2/65.
Kerang
BLACK Duck was played on a sunny day with a cool breeze to add to the comfort levels for 24 players.
The two-game winner with the biggest shots up was Frank Ritchie, O. King and George Fenton with +19.
Second-game winner was Lorraine Ritchie, Alan Marshall and Ray Maddox with +11.
The jackpot grew a little larger at the end of play as -29 was the number unclaimed and the booty now sits at $405.
So we may be expecting a few more Tuesday fortnight as the Country Carnival is on November 13 and 14.
At pennant competition on Saturday, we congregated around the clubhouse (with all teams home) before play and there was a confident air.
That’s where the warmth stopped for Kerang 1, with Kerang Golf 1 proving why they’re on top with a team performance, but it is only still early in the year and the whips aren’t quite cracking as yet.
Team Pocock had a day they’d prefer to never relive, going down to Murray by 21 shots. Team Hancock, up by five at the turn, ended up going down by two.
Team Wilson almost bridged the gap with a 19-shot win over Ritchie. The result was four shots to the negative to still be in third position with Cohuna and Barham nipping at the heels. Definitely one that got away and now we know the importance of the last five ends.
Kerang 2 hosted Barham 3 and walked away with two wins and a draw, conquering the opposition by 20 shots overall.
Team Frantz skipped away to a nice lead and maintained that difference, adding a couple more to win by 12 shots over Larpent.
Team Pascoe came away with a nice eight-shot win to continue their good season.
Team Hein had a 25-end shootout and walked away with a point to show for it. A nice three-end cameo gave them seven shots in three ends late to make a contest of it.
Kerang 4 welcomed the Gunbower Golf combination. I must say this has been a successful union of the Cohuna Golf and Gunbower clubs and one to be proud of. Without it, people unnecessarily miss out on a game.
Teams Theobald and Adams both had close matches going down by three and four shots respectively. Team Coobs took all before them and waltzed their way to a handsome 23-shot victory. One-rink wins are better than no points at all.
The club singles event began on the weekend and there will be updates provided next week. Practice continues on Monday evenings and, with all teams away this week, maybe we need to populate the green to its maximum density.
The selected teams are as follows but there still may be changes:
Kerang 1 v Leitchville away:

There is a card in the clubroom board for all to sign for Ian Roberts, who has fallen ill recently and is on the mend. So please sign it and see the member next to you does as well. This is a man who bled for this club and deserves all the love.
We are looking forward to seeing as many as possible at the Melbourne Cup annual social day. There is still time this morning to put your name down on the list to play but do it early or ring Barb Williams on 0428 574 253. Just come down to watch the cup and try your luck in the many sweeps and raffles. Please bring a plate of lunch to share.
It will be great to have our carpet bowls ladies at the club playing and trying their luck on a few winners in the cup.
Well done Midweek Division 1, who had their first win for the season at Cohuna Golf last Wednesday. Kerang 1 66 d Cohuna Golf 1 61. Skip Kim won by nine shots, skip Mark down by seven shots with skip Trevor up by three shots.
In Division 2, Kerang 2 43 lost to Cohuna 3 49.
With windy conditions again, the game was a see-saw effect, with Kerang up then Cohuna getting ahead and vice versa. However, Cohuna managed to get up by six shots over all at the end of 25 ends.
This week in Division 1 Kerang will play Cohuna 2 at Cohuna.
The teams are:
Kim Watts (s), Gayle Teasdale, Helen McBain, Alyne Fagg. Mark Hamon (s), Marlene Orr, Chelsea Fisher, Som Pascoe. Trevor Pocock (s), Kerry Watts, Carol Pay, Barry Theobald. Side captain: H. McBain.

Gala day, November 24, is fast approaching and we would love to have many of the players from our Northern District clubs come to join us on that day. Entries to Barb Williams or Helen McBain by 4pm on November 23.
Kerang Bowling Club will co-host the Northern District Carnival Pairs on November 13 and 14.
We will be providing food for both days. There will be 15 sections and winners of each section will play off in Barham after the second day.
The fours events will be played at Barham and Cohuna on the Wednesday and Thursday.
There will be no Midweek Pennant that week. Come over and watch some great bowling.
Kerang Golf
IN the past two weeks of Saturday Pennant the Division 1 side won against Cohuna, with all rinks winning, albeit narrowly, and on Saturday playing against Kerang at Kerang and again winning a close contest.
Led by a dominant Ritchie Murray rink, the Kerang Golf team finished four shots in front overall after trailing for most of the afternoon.
Ritchie’s team of Rob Fisher, Brett Hipworth and Ian Charles will be dining out at the Royal Hotel on the weekly vouchers from our sponsor after their 21-shot win over Trevor Pocock. This win included a run of 10 consecutive winning ends just after the break and set the team up for the win.
Howard McClelland’s team overcame Dale Hancock’s over the last few ends to win by two shots and Frank Ritchie had a tough day, losing by 19 to Jason Wilson. Final scores were Kerang Golf 70 to Kerang 66.
Two Saturdays ago, Division 2 played at Kerang and only won on the Graeme Hayes rink to lose by 17 shots overall.
Last Saturday, playing at home against Pyramid Hill, an enthralling tussle eventuated and at the completion of play, the overall scores were tied at 73 shots apiece.
The Carol Pay led rink was a 10-shot winner and Laurie Gray went down by only one shot. However, the Graeme Hayes team had a rare loss and their nine-shot deficit levelled scores at the end.
Division 3 had a win against the Gunny Golfers two weeks ago and the winners of the Royal Hotel vouchers were Gary Borg, Russell Carter, Steve Phillips and Neil Paul.
On Saturday, also playing at home against Barham 5, only the Ronnie McKerrow rink scored points with their seven-shot win, with Gary Borg going down by seven and Robert Taylor losing by 11.
Our midweek team won a close game against Pyramid Hill two Wednesdays ago and last week played a tied game against Cohuna Golf 2.
Rosie Laughlin, filling in as skipper, won her first game by four shots and Lorraine Ritchie was down by the same margin after getting a three on the last end to tie the game overall.
The team for this week is Rosie Laughlin, Jim McLeish, Joyce Tuohey and Lorraine Douglass. Team two is Lorraine Ritchie, Sonia McLeish, Marlene Rawson and Allison Medson. They will tackle Barham 3 at Barham.
The annual Peg Coad Memorial Triples Tournament was held on October 26 with 14 teams entered.
With ladies having to skip, these type of events give bowlers the chance to play a slightly different format.
The Coad family have been sponsoring this day for many years and the Kerang Golf Bowls Club is indebted to their longevity in supporting Peg’s club.
It was great to have son George Coad at the presentations and assist in handing out the prizes.
Looking at the honour boards, Peg was the associate president in 1974, 1983, 1996 and 1997, a club champion in 1990 and a long-time administrator and member.
Unfortunately, the Coad family had advised that this year’s event will be their last, so president Jim McLeish presented a certificate of the club’s appreciation to George for the family’s long time support of their day in honour of Peg.
The day’s winners were Sherilyn Barnes-Randell, David Randell and Yvonne Summers, who won all three games and finished with 75 points.
The runners-up had two wins and a tied game and 64 points – Marlene Orr, Carol Pay and Som Pascoe.
The best last game winner was Rhonda Ballard’s team from Cohuna with 27 points. As well as the major prizes, there were numerous novelty prizes handed out, with a “spider” held before play and lucky card draws as well. Congratulations to all the winners.
Twilight Triples played their second round in very wintry conditions two weeks ago.
Winners were the Lions team, with John Murphy, Tony Pearson and Jeff Anderson (sub for Peter Niall) winning on 31 points.
Runners up were Team JTS, comprising John Duckworth, Wayne Neville and Stuart Robinson with 30 points.
Last Wednesday, the Lions came out winners again with 30 points. Peter Niall was back to lead the pride, with John Murphy and Tony Pearson winning the vouchers for the second week in a row.
Team JTS was the runner-up and Hayes Real Estate won the chocolates – fair and square this time. The ladder sees the Lions on top with 89 points followed by the Gray, Lynch and Wilson team with 88 points, Royal Hotel on 85 and Team JTS on 65.
Our Thursday social resumed after the tournament the previous week and Laurie Gray, Dale Spinks and Trevor Burmeister came out winners, just in front of Jimmy McLeish, Ken Pay and Neil Paul. Chocolates went to Ronnie McKerrow, Dave King and Helen Pendlebury.
The club championship draw is on the noticeboard – the first games need to be played over the next three weeks, so please get these games played. Other event entry sheets are also on the noticeboard looking for entries.
The cluBarham Star Day Tournament is being held on Sunday, December 3. This is our major event for the tournament year and is Any Combination Fours. Entries to Frank Ritchie, 0409 439 029, or Aldo, 0407 310762.
Congratulations to members Frank Ritchie, Lorraine Ritchie, Sonia McLeish, Marlene Orr and Allison Medson, who represented the Northern District Playing Area in the round robin at Murray Downs on Sunday.
The Murray Valley teams finished on top for the day, with Northern District in second place.
