Across the Greens

Cohuna

THERE was a good roll-up for social bowls last Tuesday. The weather was warm with high humidity which produced a short, sharp shower later in the day.

Winners were Ann Hipwell (s), Jeff Gruar, Kaye Holmes and Lynda Smith. They defeated Ken Strachan’s team with shots up after both teams were two-game winners.

Numbers are coming in for the end of year wind-up for Midweek Pennant and also for our annual Christmas dinner. Hamper tickets are selling well for the big draw on December 16.

Midweek Pennant results: In Division 1, Cohuna 1 d Cohuna Golf 1, 12/73 to 0/61. Barham 1 d Cohuna 2, 11/65 to 1/57. Noel Hosking’s rink lost by five shots, Marj Mooney’s rink drew with Jean Fairchild’s rink, 19-all, Ken Strachan’s rink down by three shots. It was a very close tussle all day, with Cohuna 2 down by eight shots overall.

Saturday Pennant results: In Division 1, Cohuna 1 d Kerang 1, 10/82 to 2/65. In Division 2, Kerang Golf 2 dCohuna 2, 10/89 to 2/50.

Kerang

A WEEK in pennant bowls isn’t necessarily what seven days should feel like.

Kerang 1 were happily slotted in second position until Saturday happened, admittedly by percentage.

The happy-happy joy-joys finished there and then. Cohuna 1 were basically playing for their livelihoods and came to the fore, defeating Kerang 1 by 17 shots overall and keeping their finals aspirations open.

Team Wilson kept their team’s streak in tune with an eight-shot win, the other two rinks going down by three and 22 shots respectively.

With Barham coming up next week, it is time to get back into the winners’ circle.

Kerang 2 hosted Cohuna Golf 2 and were shown how to have bowls near the jack. The golfers drew away with a nine-shot victory, leaving Kerang 2 thinking about what needs to be done before the Christmas break.

The two-rink loss leaves Kerang 2 thinking about where they sit in the greater scheme of things. There was a draw played out between Hein and Porter with the other two rinks going down by eight and one correspondingly. Next week has our dour heroes travelling to Cohuna to receive their hospitality.

Kerang 3 acquired a three-rink victory by 24 shots over a Gunny/Golf combination over at Cohuna Golf. Team Sutherland snuck in by four shots against Shelly with the other two rinks getting over the line by nine and 11 shots collectively. Next week this team plays Barham 4 under the River Dome.

Kerang 4 endured an afternoon over at Cohuna and came away 29-shot winners in a two-rink win. Team Teasdale limped away with a two-shot loss with team Marshall claiming the goods by three shots. Team Theobald strolled to the winners’ circle with a comprehensive 40-12 scoreline to be the club’s best performed rink.

I have been informed by the club president to not put the teams in this particular edition of this publication for community perusal. Everyone will need to see the selected teams on Monday evening after practice. So let’s make an effort to get to the club Monday evening.

Again, there will be a group of KTHS students coming down on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday so we will need some time donated by our very own membership to have this run along smoothly. So, if you have some time available, please come down on these mornings to help the club build a connection with the Kerang community.

If there is anything of note that needs to be put into these notes, please speak with the scribe without hesitation.

The club would like to wish club champion Alyne Fagg all the best for the upcoming Champion of Champions in the new year. We all hope that you represent the club with absolute confidence within yourself and put your best foot forward.

In Midweek Pennant, both divisions had a win with the results: Division 1 Kerang 1 103 d Pyramid Hill 64, Division 2 Kerang 2 57 d Pyramid Hill 36.

The teams for this week are Division 1 play Barham at Kerang:

Skip K Watts, 3rd G Teasdale, 2nd H McBain, lead A Fagg. Skip M Hamon, 3rd M Orr, 2nd C Fisher, lead B Williams. Skip T Pocock 3rd Kerry Watts, 2nd C Pay, lead B Theobald. Side captain: B Williams. Assemble time 8.45am.

Teams for Division 2 playing Kerang Golf at Kerang Golf: Skip J Jenkins, 3rd J Maddox, 2nd D Frantz, lead J Harrison. Skip M Theobald, 3rd D Randell, 2nd T Nolan, lead M Miller. Side captain: M Theobald. Assembly time 8.45am.

With weather threatening to cancel our gala day last Friday, we managed to commence the day on time and finish not long before the storms hit Kerang.

Congratulations to the winning team who were Damien Murray, Wayne Neville, Helen Pendlebury and Jenny Harrison. The runners-up only one point behind were Fraser McQuire, Don Jenkins, Alyne Fagg and Marilyn Theobald.

Of course, a day like this just doesn’t happen. There are many people behind the scenes who contributed to this event to make it run very smoothly and successful and I sincerely thank each and every one of you. Also, thank you to all the teams who supported our annual event everyone thoroughly enjoyed their games.

Our Christmas party is on Saturday, December 16. Please check the list which is on the noticeboard in the club rooms and write your name/names if you are attending and what you are bringing. In his very busy schedule Santa will be riding in to give us some Christmas cheer.

Kerang Golf

GREAT to see all teams at home this week and a successful day for both Division 1 and 2, while Division 3 met the top team and came second.

The Division 1 team played Wakool and the in-form Ritchie Murray rink led all day to run out 15-shot winners against Robert Walker.

Frank Ritchie’s team won the last five ends to come from 15/21 to win 30/21 against Guy Treweek, and Howard McClelland let Ian Main win his second game for the year, going down by eight shots. Overall, a win by 16 shots and the important 10 points.

Division 2 was against Cohuna 2 and won easily, two rinks being successful.

The Graeme Hayes led rink didn’t allow their opponents any freedom and ran out big winners, 39/7. This was enough to claim the Royal Hotel vouchers. Congratulations Graeme, Sonia McLeish, Peter Niall and Bryce McLeish.

Laurie Gray’s team also had a big win by 17 shots, and both these scores were enough to cover for the Carol Pay rink, who went down by 10 shots. This team is now in the top four, so a winning streak will see them in the finals.

Division 3 hosted the top team in Barham 4 and were given a lesson on two rinks, with the Joyce Tuohey-skipped combination going down by one shot on the last end. Noel Robertson and Judy McKerrow both had tough opponents and suffered big defeats.

The Midweek team hosted Leitchville last Wednesday and although Judy McKerrow’s rink had a narrow win, it was not enough to cover the margin on the other rink. This team now sits outside the top four, so a supreme effort will have to be made to get back to finals action.

This week’s team, to play Kerang 2 at home, is Judy McKerrow, Rosie Laughlin, Joyce Tuohey and Lorraine Douglass. Team two is Lorraine Ritchie, Sonia McLeish, Marlene Rawson and Allison Medson.

The Twilight Triples played night six of their series with some high scores recorded.

With a big win by 22 shots, to go with their 32 points, the Royal Hotel team of Rob Fisher, David “Rat” Conlan and Paul Saunders received the Choice Cut Butchers vouchers and keep them in the race for the trophies at the completion.

The runners-up were Misfits, led by Andrew Charles, with 32 points as well, but only 17 shots in front.

The ladder has now tightened up at the top, with McAndo and Deadlies – Ian, both on 149 points, followed by Gray, Lynch, Wilson on 148, with the Royal Hotel making up the top four on 139. Hirdy’s Buslines looks to have averted the wooden spoon with their surprise win – apparently Hayley was the “star”.

Thursday social saw a great crowd of 24 players and visitors. We welcomed caravanners Bob and Gwenda from Warrnambool and two games of triples were played.

The winners were Sonia McLeish, Fraser Macguire and Ken Pay, winning both games and finishing 13 shots up.

The Jim McLeish, Dale Spinks and Gwenda were the runners-up, also with two wins, but only three shots up. The chocolates to Noel Robertson, Trevor Burmeister and visitor Bob.

Our cluBarham Star Day Tournament is on Sunday. There are still a few vacancies, so if you wish to play, it is not too late. Put your names on the noticeboard or ring Aldo, 0407 310 762 or Frank Ritchie, 0409 439 029.

The wheelbarrow Christmas competition will be drawn in mid-December, so members are encouraged to sell their tickets and return the books to Carol Pay.

Club matches are slowly getting played and the entries for all other events will close on November 30. If you want to play in the Club Pairs, 100 Up, B Grade Singles or Club Fours, please enter on the sheets on the noticeboard.

The Christmas party this year will be held at the Royal Hotel on December 16. It is important to book your names in, so please help the organisers by placing your names on the sheet on the noticeboard.
