Across the Greens

Kerang

OUT of the four Kerang teams that took to the greens, three came away victorious. Not a bad day’s work.

Kerang 1 took on Barham and snuck in by nine shots after trailing all but the last five ends.

The margin at times exceeded 20 shots and this result shows that if we stick at it, things will turn our way.

Team Hancock gave opposition skipper Harker a big start of 17-3 and gutsed it out bowling for the team and not the rink, going down by three shots.

Team Wilson fought out a 20-all draw against Faul with team Pocock turning a 27-15 scorecard in against Mansbridge.

The game certainly had a finals feel about it and to come away with the points is very pleasing. Hosting Wakool this week will be a dour test as they normally give nothing short of 100 per cent.

Kerang 2 were met by Cohuna with open arms in Cohuna and walked away winners by 22 shots.

Team Pascoe crept in by four shots, team Hein also by six shots, in what were close encounters for the majority of the day.

The defining effort was team Frantz being triumphant to the tune of 12 shots, hopefully consolidating their position in the four. Kerang 2 will be hosting fellow finals aspirant in Cohuna Golf 2. This could go a long way to who gets the second chance as this is a second-v-third fixture.

Kerang 3 were the only team home and used that advantage to full effect with a three-rink overall win by 23 shots to be the biggest winners for the day.

Team Adams came from behind to pinch a one-shot win over Slingo.

Team Coobs looked set for another big win only to be reeled in a little after the great start they got and prevailed by nine shots.

Team Rosewall skipped away to a big lead by the break and kept the opposition at arm’s reach winning by 13 shots. Kerang 3 trek out to the golf club to take on Kerang Golf 3 who aren’t enjoying this year as much as last year.

Kerang 4 was also over at the Riverdome in Barham and were unfortunately well beaten by the Barham River Rollers.

Team Teasdale going down by eight was the best result, with teams Marshall and Theobald found short by 15 and 22 shots respectively.

A chance to redeem ourselves in a game against second on the ladder in Wakool. Both Kerang 3 and 4 are in the hunt for finals being fourth and fifth respectively.

The raffles were won by Mark Hamon and Trevor Pocock after a good day on the greens.

The Club Champion Pairs is on Thursday evening and is at the semi-final stage with formidable combination Teasdale/Pocock against Brown/Murray and Fagg/Theobald against Wilson/Hamon. Good luck to everyone and may the heads be tight.

I believe the teams will be selected on Monday evenings after training. There is only five games left in the season, with three coming after Christmas and finals commencing afterwards. So get along to training to put our best foot forward for upcoming finals action for those who qualify.

There is a list on the board at the clubroom for the Christmas party.

This will happen on December 16 and normally a great time had by all. So please on your next expedition to our clubrooms, put your name down and join in on the fun.

Kerang Golf

A BIT of rain around over the past week curtailed some of the bowls at Kerang Golf, with Midweek Pennant and Twilight Triples cancelled last Wednesday.

However, the sun shone on Thursday and our regular social bowls was enjoyed by 20 players.

A mini type tournament of three bowl triples over three games of six ends was played and everyone seemed to enjoy the different format.

At the completion, two pairs had won all three games. With a total of 12 shots up, Howard McClelland and John Murphy came out winners, with runners-up Mick Pors and Bryce McLeish winning their three games by a total of seven shots. Chocolates to John Duckworth and Trevor Burmeister.

The highlight of the weekend was our cluBarham Star Day Tournament on Sunday with 20 teams participating, including two teams from Lockington.

After the rains, the greens were well prepared and bowled well for all bowlers. It was great to see cluBarham board members Glen Faull and Gerard Keane in attendance and enjoying themselves on the green.

At the completion of the three games, there were four teams who won all their games, and with the points system operating, the winners with 77 points and 24 shots up, was the Cohuna Golf combination of Jon Henty, Mick Carmody, Ron Eckhardt and Les Whittacker.

Also on 77 points, but only 20 shots up overall, was the local Lorraine Ritchie rink of Nick Jarman, Allison Medson and Mick Pors.

In third place, on 76 points, the Gunbower team of John Pearson, Graeme L’Huillier, Wayne Cowan and Gary “Scruffy” Musgrove.

Also winning their three games was the Leitchville combination of Kevin “Roy” Dehne, Trevor Hore, Suzanne Bennett and Ron Cornwall, and they were the best last game winner, so went home with a consolation prize.

The chocolates went to the Kerang team of Marshall Rosewall, Wayne “Tige” Neville, Maty Infantino and Mick Coobs. Mick wasn’t in attendance, so he missed out on his “treat”.

Saturday Pennant saw all teams playing away from home, with Division 1 at Gunbower, Division 2 at Cohuna Golf and Division 3 heading interstate to Wakool.

At Gunbower, the home side is always hard to beat and at the afternoon tea break, it was anyone’s game with the Golfers leading by four shots.

Ritchie Murray’s team continued on with their good form against John Hogan’s team and with their 17-shot win, have won the Royal Hotel vouchers again. Congratulations to this ream, they are having a successful year.

The Howard McClelland rink returned to the winners’ list with a strong performance against Graeme L’Huillier, winning by 13 shots and Frank Ritchie’s team got in front with only two bowls to go against Phil Davis, only for Phil to spoil their day with his last bowl, going down by that one shot. Overall, a win to Kerang Golf by 29 shots, and a position in the top four.

The Division 2 team travelled to Cohuna Golf to take on the second top team. Only the Graeme Hayes rink was successful with a two-shot win. Carol Pay was down by 13, as was Laurie Gray. This team is hanging on to a place in the top four, so a couple more wins will give this team a chance of playing finals.

Division 3 had the long interstate trip to Wakool and were playing against the second top team as well. A creditable performance with Judy McKerrow’s rink winning by eight shots, but not enough to cover for the sevent-shot losses by Noel Robertson and Gary Borg.

The annual Christmas Hams tournaments at Cohuna Golf, Cohuna and Leitchville have commenced, and the first night at Cohuna Golf last Monday had 20 teams competing.

A Kerang Golf team of president Jimmy, Aldo, Frank Ritchie and Bryce McLeish came out winners and now have their ham for Christmas lunch.

The wheelbarrow competition is travelling along well and will be drawn on December 16. Members are reminded that their books need to be returned to Carol Pay ASAP. Also, our Christmas party will be held on this same Saturday at the Royal Hotel, with names needed on the list on the noticeboard.

Club Championship games are continuing and all other events have now closed. The draws will be on the noticeboard during the week.

Some late news coming in is that the trip away has been tentatively organised for the weekend of March 2 next year, at the Marong Big 4 Caravan Park, and activities in the Bendigo region over the weekend. Expressions of interest will be needed, before booking are made.
