Cohuna

WARM weather did not deter a bowlers rolling up for last Tuesday’s social bowls.

On 51 points were the winning team of Maurie Marnie, Steve Clarke and Ursula, a visitor to the club.

Today is the annual break-up afternoon tea for social bowls, with food, entertainment and a visit from Santa.

Another couple of happy social nights were held at the club rooms last weekend. Visitors from Queensland enjoyed the food and great company

with many providing their own entertainment with the help of a few willing locals of course.

On Sunday morning there was a tour of the district showing off what a great area we live in. Thanks to all members who go the extra yard to welcome visitors and to promote our town and surrounds.

Monday night was Ham Night at Cohuna, with a good numbers of bowlers keen to take home the Christmas ham. Winners were Gavan Hird, Frank Tonn, Wayne Brooks and Geoff McIvor. Runners-up were Pat Quinn, Garry Easton, Ian Coates and Jason.

Midweek Pennant results:

In Division 1, Cohuna Golf 1 defeated Cohuna 2, 10/78 to 2/57. In this game at Cohuna Golf Greg Beck’s team won by seven shots. However, Noel Hosking’s and Marj Mooney’s teams were both well beaten by teams skippered by Peter Bibby and Yvonne Eckhardt. Playing at home, Cohuna 1 defeated Kerang 1 12/83 to 0/44. This leaves Cohuna 1 on the top of the ladder, just ahead of Barham 1.

In Division 2, Cohuna 3 played at home and were beaten by Kerang Golf 1 8/63 to 0/31.

Kerang

THERE were 24 brave souls who enjoyed a nice social outing that involved bowls and banter.

Again Lindsay Hein, along with June Maddox and George Fenton, took the chocolates. The team collected both wins with a margin of +16. Highest second-game winners were Carol Pay, Marlene Rawson and Yvonne Summers, with a win by six shots.

With Saturday Pennant all but finished before the Christmas break, Kerang had three wins out of four.

Kerang 1 greeted Wakool, who always make it a great day and that is the reason they are one of the more popular clubs across the playing area.

Kerang 1 had a two-rink win by 22 shots, thanks to Team Pocock’s 19-shot win against Main and team Wilson’s big fightback to cover Hamilton by seven.

Team Hancock, chasing shots to try to get the rink, fell short by four against Treweek. The win puts the club in a great position to contest the finals with the competition’s nemesis Cohuna Golf coming up this week in a top-of-the-table fixture.

Kerang 2 had an even tussle against Cohuna Golf 2 and prevailed by six shots. With a draw, loss and a win, it was a bit of a mixed grill. But it narrows the gap between second and third positions on the ladder.

Team Pascoe carried the day with a 15-shot victory, team Hein scrapping out the draw and team Frantz down by nine.

Keep going hard guys, that second spot is certainly up for grabs and more gutsy performances like that anything can happen. Kerang Golf 2 looms as the next opponent and another win may consolidate a finals appearance.

Kerang 3 were out at the sister club Kerang Golf 3 and came away mighty winners. The margin was 39 shots on their greens. Team Teasdale had a fair old arm-wrestle against Robertson and came out victorious by a singular shot. The other two rinks were one-sided affairs, with team Rosewall and team Byrne being dominant by 16 and 22 shots apiece. This win has them in fourth position with a home game coming up against Kerang 4.

Kerang 4 travelled to Wakool 2 and came away weary and defeated 39 shots down. With team Adams narrowly going down by four, the other two rinks were both double figure losses. But not all was doom and gloom. We have it on good authority that Jenny Harrison had an absolute day out. Well done, Jenny. As mentioned before, Kerang 4 play in a home derby against Kerang 3 to keep their finals chances alive.

After Saturday Pennant, please make an effort to come to the Christmas party at the clubrooms. Bring your significant other and show them how cool we really are.

Refreshments will be made available and please bring either a salad or sweet.

We may even have a visit from ex-member Daniel Baker, who was a big part in four of the five-peat Division 1 premiership seasons between 2014 and 2019. Rumour has it he may even pull the Black Ducks garb back on in a once off. He did, however, miss out on the undefeated season. He may be in Darwin playing a fair old standard of bowls, but still a Black Duck at heart.

The club fours have been rescheduled for after Christmas, so if you are playing in the fours, catch up with either Frantzy or Faggy. The pairs final is on Thursday evening and will feature the Pocock-Teasdale and Wilson-Hamon combinations and, if pennant is any guide, this will be a cracker and may the best team win. If you have nothing on, come down and feast your eyes on some fine bowls play.

In Midweek Pennant, the Division 1 side was soundly beaten by Cohuna 1, while the Division 2 team had a good win over Barham 3.

This week is the last game before the Christmas break. Division 1 will be home to Cohuna Golf 1 so our members are asked to please bring some food to share for lunch. Division 2 travel to Leitchville and thank you to Leitchville, who will be providing food to enjoy together.

Barefoot bowls begins on Thursday, January 11, and will run for seven weeks.

Come along and join in the fun of this great social night. Bring a team and single entries are most welcome. Make entries to Allan Davies on 0429 981 731 or Alyne Fagg on 0428 521 296.

Also entries are being taken for the Classic Triples, which will be on February 5 and 6. Make entries to Barry Theobald on 0429 388 961, Kevin Teasdale 0409 674 560 or Alyne Fagg on 0428 521 296.

Kerang Golf

IN the penultimate round of Saturday Pennant in 2023, Division 1 hosted the top team, Cohuna Golf, Division 3 played Kerang 3 at home and the Division 2 team travelled to Barham to play Barham 3.

There was not a lot of joy for the golf teams as all were defeated and only Graeme Hayes’ rink in Division 2 finished in front.

In Division 1, Cohuna Golf gave the home team a lesson in consistency, with all rinks having a handy lead for most of the afternoon. Frank Ritchie went down by 11 shots to Jarrod Hammond, Howard McClelland was 13 in arrears to Harrison Keely and Ritchie Murray had a bad day, losing by 25 shots to Fletcher. Back to the drawing board for the selectors, with Cohuna at Cohuna this week.

Division 2 fared a little better, with Graeme Hayes, Sonia McLeish, Peter Niall and Bryce McLeish winning by 16 shots and collecting the Royal Hotel vouchers as the most successful rink for the day. Laurie Gray was down by three shots, but the Carol Pay rink was soundly beaten. Overall, it was a 74/59 result for Barham 3.

Division 3 were also at home, hosting Kerang 3. After a promising start by the Golfers, the Kerang team got on top and held on for an easy win. Noel Robertson’s team was best with a loss by one shot on the last end. Gary Borg and Judy McKerrow had days they would rather forget.

Last Wednesday, the Midweek Pennant team had a strong win against Cohuna 3 over at Cohuna, with Lorraine Ritchie’s team leading all day to win by 23 shots and Judy McKerrow’s rink winning by nine shots. This win put them back in to the top four, so a few more wins will have the team participating in the finals again.

The final night of the Twilight Triples was completed last Wednesday, on a great evening, after being washed out the previous week.

The top teams play off in a finals-like format and some excellent bowls were produced in the Royal Hotel versus Deadlies – Ian game and the McAndo against the Gray, Lynch, Wilson team.

With the Gray, Lynch and Wilson team defeating their opponents, they went to the top of the ladder and are the 2023 Twilight Triples champions.

The team of Laurie Gray, John Lynch and Dave King (sub for Andrew Wilson) produced some excellent bowls on the night that counts.

In the other “finals” game, the lead changed regularly and there was good bowling throughout the game. At the completion the Royal Hotel team of Rob Fisher, Ritchie Murray and David Conlan won by one shot and moved from fourth spot to the runner-up position. Final ladder positions were Gray, Lynch and Wilson on 175, followed by Royal Hotel 165, Deadlies – Ian on 158 and McAndo rounded out the top four on 157.

This series was enjoyed by everyone who played and a is warm up for the Ian “Squizzy” Taylor Memorial Barefoot Bowls, which starts early in the new year.

The winner of the night’s event was team JTS, with 31 points and they were thrilled with their big win. Team members John Duckworth, Wayne Neville and Stuart Robinson will now enjoy some products from Choice Cut Butchers. Runners-up were the Golfers with 29 points and 20 shots up. The Golfers were represented by Greg McNeil, Mal McKenzie and Jeff Anderson. The chocolates went to Hayes Real Estate – Graeme Hayes, Travis Hipworth and Dave Wood.

Thursday social bowls was attended by 15 players on a warm afternoon. Winners were Frank Ritchie, Craig Hicks and Dave Wood, the only two- game winner. Runners-up were the Howard McClelland, Noel Robertson and Bryce McLeish combination, who finished with a win and a tied game. The chocolates went to Ken Pay and Neil Paul. Members are reminded that the draws for the B Grade, 100 Up and Club Pairs are on the noticeboard, with some matches to be completed before the end of the month. Check to see whether you have a match to play.

The Christmas Wheelbarrow competition will be drawn on December 16, so get tickets purchased before that date. Members who haven’t handed in their book, are asked to get it to Carol Pay as soon as possible.

Our Christmas party is being held on the same day at the Royal Hotel, so get your bookings in and we will celebrate the festive season in style at our Saturday Pennant sponsor’s premises.
