Kerang
WITH the yule tide upon us, I would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Christmas.
Hope everyone who is travelling takes extra care and we see everyone after the new year reinvigorated for what will be an interesting three-week period in the Northern District Playing Area leading up to finals.
It was back to business against our old foes in Cohuna Golf 1 for the Kerang 1 side. The result couldn’t be split after both teams finished on 65 shots apiece after 25 gruelling ends.
Team Wilson suffered an uncharacteristic loss going down top to young gun Keely by 15 shots, with team Hancock back in the winners’ circle by four shots over Fletcher.
It was team Baker who impressed most with an 11-shot win over Hammond, having us still in second spot with only four points separating second and fourth. Kerang Golf after Christmas will be an interesting battle for top-two ambitions.
Kerang 2 continued their topsy-turvy season with a loss to Kerang Golf 2 proving you can’t take your foot off the pedal at any stage this year regardless of the opposition. The combination went down to the tune of 22 shots with only team Hein saluting, while team Pascoe went down by 24 shots and team Frantz two.
With Barham 3 on the horizon sitting in fourth, we need to be on our toes to keep our finals chances alive.
Kerang 3 and Kerang 4 battled it out in the Kerang derby with Kerang 3 gaining the ascendancy early and not relinquishing, an important three-rink, 42-shot victory cementing them in the four momentarily it would seem.
Team Neville won handsomely by 23 shots over Adams and team Rosewall had another impressive triumph by 15 over Marshall. Team Byrne fought tooth and nail to sneak in by four shots against Davies.
The much-needed win propels them into third position with an outside chance of stealing second. Kerang 4 now have to get the whips cracking to have any hope of sneaking a finals appearance.
Congratulations must go to Jason Wilson and Mark Hamon, who took out the pairs championship against some staunch opposition in Trevor Pocock and Kevin Teasdale.
It was a close match with the final margin being one shot. For those not in the know, the pairs championship title is accompanied by the Ian Roberts Perpetual Shield, named in honour of a very humble and very hard worker.
Jason and Mark should be very proud of their achievement with the opportunity now to have their names engraved on it.
Kerang Golf
THE last games of Saturday Pennant before the Christmas-new year break.
Division 1 travelled to Cohuna and, although winning on two rinks, went down overall by 10 shots.
Frank Ritchie’s team won 24/21 against Frank Tonn. Howard McClelland’s rink won by three shots also against Ric Parr and Ritchie Murray tried valiantly to bridge an early deficit, going down 19/35 to Wayne Brooks.
Division 2 played at home against the second placed Kerang 2 and came out victorious by 22 shots overall. Laurie Gray, Jeff Anderson, John Duckworth and Trevor Linton had a huge 24-shot win over Som Pascoe and won the Royal Hotel vouchers for this week.
Carol Pay’s team turned their game around from the previous week, winning by two shots over Ross Frantz, and Ronnie McKerrow went down by four shots after losing the last four ends against Lindsay Hein.
This win keeps the Division 2 team in with a chance of finals action, being only two points outside the four, with three games to go. Keep up the good work.
Also at Cohuna, Division 3 had a bad day, being soundly beaten, with the only shining light being the Judy McKerrow rink who won by six shots. Gary Borg and Noel Robertson didn’t have good days.
The Midweek team had another win last Wednesday, this time against Barham 2, by 17 shots overall. Lorraine Ritchie’s rink came from well down, to win 27/18 and the Judy McKerrow team lead from the start to record a 27/19 win.
Thursday social bowls continues to attract good numbers and last week, the Craig Hicks, Trevor Linton and Ronnie McKerrow triple won the day, from a pairing of Noel Robertson and Frank Ritchie. Chocolates to Laurie Gray, Trevor Burmeister and Dale Spinks.
Social bowls will continue each Thursday and also on the weekends prior to pennant resuming, in the middle of January. The match committee will send members an SMS message to let everyone know.
The Christmas party was held at Royal Hotel on Saturday night and again, the members and their partners enjoyed some fun and games and great food. Thanks to Rob and Jo Fisher for their continued support of Kerang Golf Bowling Club and thanks to Santa for calling in and making everyone even happier.
Apparently, the best on ground was Joycey, as her grandies were arranged to pick her up. Not far behind was the Noel Robbo and Rob Fabry pair.
The Christmas wheelbarrow competition was drawn on Saturday night and the lucky winner was Brad McEwan, a visitor to town last Friday, who has relatives in the area. When contacted about his win, he said he would give the prize to his parents, who were impacted by the Rochester floods last year.
Thanks to all who purchased tickets in this important annual fundraiser for our club, with special thanks to Carol Pay who organised the operation and the rosters.
Also, last Friday, the Alec Mitchell Green was sanded and there were lots of members, as well as some non-bowlers (golfers) helping out, which was great to see. Maintenance of grass bowling greens is a difficult job and regular refreshing activities like top dressing help to keep the playing surfaces in top condition.
The Ian “Squizzy” Taylor Memorial Barefoot Bowls is scheduled to commence in early January. We are looking for some new teams, so if you are interested in playing or forming a team, and need more information, please contact Aldo (0407 310 762) or Frank Ritchie (0409 439 029) or Rob Fisher at Royal Hotel.
Members are reminded that some club matches need to be completed before the new year, so check the draws on the noticeboard to see if you have to play a game. If the games are not played, the match committee will have no option other than to “wipe” the games.
Merry Christmas and a happy new year to everyone who reads these notes – and we’ll be back in 2024.

THE men’s and ladies singles club championships were held last weekend.
Saturday’s matches were played in difficult, gusty conditions.
In the semi-finals, Dale Williams defeated Wayne Cook, 25/19, and Peter Schlitz defeated Mick Coleman, 25/19.
In the final on Sunday, Schlitz started well but Williams’ shot-making improved as the game went on.
After 22 ends, the game was tied at 18-all then Dale picked up a three and went on to win 25/22.
The ladies final was played between Amber Wood and Di Manners. This was a close contest in the early stages with Di taking a narrow lead.
As the game went on, Amber began to find her form and eventually took out a comfortable win.
Dale and Amber will contest the champion of champions at Woomelang on January 6.
