Across the Greens

Cohuna

SOCIAL bowls resumed on January 9, although there were some casual games played over the Christmas-new year period.

Last Tuesday’s social bowls winners were Gayle Anderson, Rodney Bannister, Alan Cooke and Bev Taylor. There were 21 bowlers on a very warm, humid morning, all appreciating the morning starting time of 9.30am.

There was no Saturday Pennant on January 14 due to the playing of Bowls Victoria Regional Sides Championships. Club members took advantage of the day to play some club events including lady’s pairs and 100-up games.

In Division 1 of Midweek Pennant on January 10, Cohuna 1 defeated Pyramid Hill, and Kerang 1 defeated Cohuna 2. In Division 2, Leitchville defeated Cohuna 3.

Some busy recent days with our Star Tournament being played on Sunday having 32 teams entered.

Yesterday the club ran the Mawson’s Triples event, which is always popular. Results from these two events next week.

Recently, four local bowlers travelled to Kingston for a two-day tournament and managed to win runners-up prizes.

They won their six games and lost on a countback. Kingston bowlers have previously visited Cohuna and issued the invitation to reciprocate.

Well done to Dallas Mathers, Rick Parr, Ian Howard and Pat Quinn.

Over Christmas and into January, the club was very well frequented by visitors who really made the most of our amenities.

Barefoot bowls is really popular and the competitions are very keen, with one group even running an annual shield.

For a minimal fee, these visitors also use the barbecue and bar facilities.

Club members volunteer many extra hours maintaining the greens, running the bar and assisting in numerous ways.

A big thank you to all the visitors and our club members for making these happy social events happen.

Kerang

WE had the first week of barefoot bowls on a steamy Thursday evening and had about 80 players take part in what is a very popular event not just for our club, but the broad cross section of our community whom congregate to our facilities.

It was decided through a stringent countback system that Wilsons Watering Hole be awarded the meat trays for winning the night on 51 points, from Kiahs Angels on shots up. Well done to the committee on getting the night up and going again.

If you haven’t dusted the bowls off it may be high time for you to concede and hit the greens post haste, just like the scribe needs to. The first of three weeks before finals is upon us and we need to be on our games to maintain the rage to keep our positions on our respective ladders.

Kerang 1 have a tough assignment which will go a fair way to deciding who finishes top two for the much coveted second chance.

With Kerang Golf getting the chocolates last game on our greens, we will be looking to return the favour on theirs. It will be a tough task but one Kerang 1 will meet head on with gusto in what is a second-v-third fixture.

Kerang 2 head over to Barham 3 under the roof and should enjoy the day put on for them over there. A must-win for our mob to enhance chances of second spot which is just within reach. Positions on the ladder dictate that this will be a close affair with third-v-fourth and 10 points separating these two teams.

Kerang 3 will endeavour to defeat the top of the table Barham 4 to keep their finals chances alive. Sitting in third spot on the ladder doesn’t mean much at this stage of the season, especially with fifth spot 12 points behind our team. A strong showing at home will be needed to keep the wolves at bay.

Kerang 4 will travel to Cohuna to take on Cohuna 3 who currently occupy fourth spot on the ladder. A Kerang 4 win here will reignite their chances of finals participation and also boost Kerang 3’s chances of the same.

Currently in sixth spot, they need everything top go their way whilst winning the remaining two games to see where they will finish. Having the bye in the next round will prove a bit of a hurdle, but we will meet that when it arrives.

Selection will again be on Monday night after training, so if you can make it there please do.

This is where the pressure increases and we all know what happens under pressure – diamonds are made.

Every week should now be treated as a mini final so we are already in the mindset when they do arrive. Good bowling and good luck to everyone in the Kerang uniform.

Kerang Golf

NEARLY back to the Saturday Pennant season after the Christmas-new year break.

At Kerang Golf, bowls has continued through this period with good numbers attending, when the weather permitted.

The Wednesday Midweek pennant resumed last week and the Golf team travelled to Pyramid Hill and a close contest eventuated, with the score at the finish being in Kerang Golf’s favour by two shots overall.

The Lorraine Ritchie rink won by seven shots and Judy McKerrow’s team was down by five shots. This win leaves the Division 2 team in third spot on the ladder, with three games until the finals.

Last Thursday, the social bowls was again enjoyed by 16 players, with three-bowl pairs being the game. In a change of format, a play-off was needed to separate the two combinations who won both games.

A one-bowl third end was needed to split the two pairs, with Lloyd Murray and Greg Tate coming out on top, from the Trevors – Linton and Burmeister who had to settle for the runners-up prize.

Chocolates to Noel Robertson and Dale Spinks.

Saturday Social had only eight players who had a game of fours over 15 ends.

Rob Fisher’s team of Fonzy, John Murphy and Mari Miller, came out winners over Laurie Gray, Noel Robertson, Greg Tate and Craig Hicks, by three shots

The Ian “Squizzy” Taylor Barefoot Bowls commences tomorrow night and there are still some vacancies.

If you are interested in having a roll, in this very friendly, social format, get in contact with any Kerang Golf Bowls member or ring Aldo (0407 310 762) to find out more.

The postponed Ladies Championship play-off is scheduled for this coming Thursday at 10 am – good luck to Carol Pay and Marlene Orr.

The men’s semi-final is also on this week. There is a host of 100 Up and Pairs matches also being played, so a busy time, and good practice, for the pennant restart on Saturday.

A few members have attended tournaments over the last week at Murray Downs and Cohuna, but no winners have been reported, but a good time was had by all.

Our annual Arnoldt and Greenwood sponsored Australia Day Triples Tournament is getting closer, so it is time to get your teams organised.

Entries on the sheet on the noticeboard or with Aldo or Frank Ritchie (0409 439 029).

This tournament is very popular, with lamb burgers for lunch before an afternoon of three bowl triples.
