Across the Greens

Cohuna

IT has been a huge week of activity at the club.

No Saturday Pennant on January 13 due to the running of the Regional Sides Championships, but a good number of players turned up for social bowls instead.

Winners on the day were Brian, Colin, Richard Flinders and Ros Dunne. Runners-up were Trevor, Ken Hocking and Ken Strachan. Gordon Anderson was the lucky cash winner.

Ray and Keith served up a great barbecue to follow, with Marj and Anne providing the salads and Noddy and Ian on bar duty.

It was great to welcome visitors from Murtoa, including Robbie, Dee, Tronny and Brian, also an ex-Cohuna visitor in Neville Lyons enjoyed a catch up.

Sunday’s Star Day was huge, with 32 teams competing. Thanks to Rhonda for the great pics on Facebook showing the day’s highlights.

Winners with 83 points were Mike Hoffman, Jeff Reade, Ray Storey and Don. Runners-up on 80 points were the Barham team of Spike Laurson, Charley Bagg, Bob Maud and Brian Mainbridge.

Pat Quinn and Phil Frances won both their games, just missing out on a prize.

The day, with a new format, was deemed a huge success.

Thanks to Brian and his workers who turned out the greens in excellent condition.

Dallas did a great job securing the many entries too. In general, it was the teamwork of so many club members which ensured the overall success of the day, so well done to all.

Monday night, January 15, it was the Mawson’s Triples event. Winners were Tony, Roy and Ron, and the runners-up were Mick Carmody, Ian Coates and Blue Fletcher.

Tuesday’s social bowls were well supported with 19 players. It was the girls in the winner’s circle, with Mary Meredith, Sue Burgess and Ursula taking home the prize.

Wednesday’s Midweek Pennant was cancelled due to rain.

On Friday the Singles Club Championships were played.

Both games were keenly contested; winners for this season are Rhonda Ballard and Peter Van der Zan, with Val Dehne and Ian Howard the runners-up. Congratulations to the worthy winners and well done to the runners-up.

Kerang

AS Don Monaghan gallivants around the globe, the Northern District bowling fraternity were back at it on Saturday and Kerang were lucky enough to walk away with three victorious teams.

Kerang 1 ventured out to sister club and fierce rivals Kerang Golf and came away 34-shot winners with all rinks up.

Team Wilson continue on their merry way, anchoring the overall result with a 15-shot win over Ritchie. Whereas teams Hancock and Pocock defeated their foes by 11 and eight, respectively. The win all but seals a spot in the finals with second spot staring them in the face.

Kerang 2 met up with Barham 3 under the Riverdome, and eventually wore them down to all but secure a finals gig by five shots.

Team Frantz were the unlucky ones to finish on the wrong side of the ledger, going down by two shots to Keegan.

The other two rinks were able to rise above their opponents to win by one shot and six shots correspondingly and guaranteeing victory. Third place appears to be theirs with a very slight chance of sneaking second spot if all things go to plan.

Kerang 3 conquered Barham 4 to the tune of eight shots with two very close games keeping the result a mystery until the closing stages of the game. Team Byrne went down to Lake by a solitary shot and team Rosewall got up over Wishart. Team Coobs keep rolling along nicely with a six-shot victory to put with their other great performances throughout this season. Finals beckons for Kerang 3 with all hands on deck to make sure this happens.

Kerang 4 had a day to forget with three very lopsided games going down by 77 shots overall to Cohuna 3.

Team Marshall went down to Strachan by 18 shots to be the best-performed rink. Team Theobald went down to Beck by 25 shots and team Adams down to Howard by 34. With a bye this week, this all but puts paid to our Kerang 4 teams hopes for finals action.

Black Duck Social bowls was played Tuesday and had 18 players take part.

The winners of the day were the Alyne Fagg, Ken Pay and Peter Basile combination with two wins and 15 shots up.

The second game winners were Jeff Jackson, Ray Maddox and Barry Theobald with a good win by 11 shots.

The jackpot remains unclaimed and has risen to the princely sum of $537. This development will no doubt flush the trophy hunters out and our numbers will see a huge spike.

The Athol Stephen Classic Triples extravaganza will be played in a couple of weeks. We are still taking entries and I can personally assure you of a great two days bowls on some of the best greens in Victoria.

The atmosphere is unparalleled with many chortles and guffaws prevalent. So if you are interested please get in contact with the club or Alyne Fagg with your entry.

On the Greens has started and is a well attended event. But if you want a relaxing time with some great people (and maybe some refreshments) come on down to the bowling club and have yourself a good night. Winners of our first night were Kiah Angels in Murray Sutherland, Darren Sutherland, Russell Fawcett and Neil Lehmann.

All Midweek Pennant last week was cancelled due to the rain so every team in Division 1 and Division 2 received four points each.

This week Division 1 play Barham 1 whilst Division 2 play Barham 2. Both teams will play in Barham. Please make sure that you are at the club house by 8.15am to leave.

A reminder that the ladies will be playing their 100-up on Thursday at 10am. There is a list up on the board in the club house so please add your name by Wednesday if you are able to play.

Kerang Golf

BACK to Saturday Pennant with Golf hosting town friends and rivals from Kerang in Division 1, and with finals places not yet guaranteed, a close contest was envisaged.

However, this was not the case, the visitors breaking away to an early lead and closing out the game with wins on all rinks.

With this win, the Kerang team also wins the Shannon-Wise Cup for Division 1 matches between the two town clubs over the home-and-away season. Best for the Golf team was the Ritchie Murray rink who went down by eight shots, Howard McLelland down by 11 and Frank Ritchie lost by 15.

Division 2 travelled to Pyramid Hill, a place in the final four still in their sights.

Winning on two rinks and getting 10 points put this team in the top four with two games remaining. Ronnie McKerrow’s rink had a big win 35/19 and Laurie Gray’s team also won by 16 shots.

A countback was used to separate the teams, and Ronnie McKerrow, Sonia McLeish, Peter Niall and Bryce McLeish are the winners of the Royal Hotel vouchers for this week.

Division 3 has to wait another week before getting back into action, having the bye in this round.

The Midweek team travelled over to Cohuna Golf, only to find the rain delaying play and, eventually, having play cancelled. A trip to Waffles was enjoyed by the team, before their long trek home.

Australia Day is this coming Friday. Kerang Golf Bowls’ popular Australia Day Triples Tournament is being conducted as well and spots are filling up. If you wish to play, get in contact with Aldo (0407 310 762) or Frank Ritchie (0409 439 029) ASAP.

The famous Choice Cut Butchers lamb burgers are on the menu for lunch, prior to an afternoon of bowls.

The first night of the Ian “Squizzy” Taylor Memorial Barefoot Bowls was held last Wednesday evening.

It was great to see a few new faces and a few new team names.

The winners on the night were Lake Charm Boat Club with 30 points and nine shots up, in their two wins, and therefore the recipients of the Choice Cut Butchers vouchers for this week.

Jim McLeish, Bryce McLeish, Greg McNeill and Geoff Davey were the team members. Runner-up was the Taylor Ashton Painters team of “Fonzy”, Rob Fabry, “Wheels” O’Neill and John “Digger” Peck, who only won their two games by eight shots. Chocolates to the Kerang Truck Repairs team – Shane Waddingham, Heath O’Brien, Mick Fisher and Scott Bremner on five points.

Our Thursday social was attended by 14 players with three club matches also being played.

It was great to welcome caravanners, Nick and Kate from the Gold Coast, who called Kerang home for a few days and had an enjoyable day of bowls.

The winners were John Murphy, Ray Maddox and Craig Hicks who won both their games by a total of 29 shots, just in front of the pair of Allison Medson and Rob “Curly” Curtis, who finished 21 up. Chocolates to June Maddox and Trevor Burmeister.

It was great to see all the club matches played by the due dates. The semi-finals of the Men’s Club Championship were completed last Thursday and Howard McClelland and Ritchie Murray will play off for the Cliff Blythman Memorial, Club Championship, after they defeated Frank Ritchie and Ian Charles respectively, with the same scoreline of 25/19.

The Ladies Club Championship has been played with Marlene Orr getting away to a flying start and held on when Carol Pay made a late surge, to get within five shots. Marlene closed out the game with the final score being 25/16. This is Marlene’s second Club Championship at Kerang Golf – congratulations.

Lastly, a reminder that the Mixed Pairs Championship will be held on Monday, February 12. An entry sheet will be put on the noticeboard, so please organise your partner.
