Across the Greens

Cohuna

THERE was only one team to win two games at last Tuesday’s social bowls.

The trio comprising Trevor Kirby, Kaye Holmes and Ken Strachan were pleased with their win judging by the happy snaps taken at presentations.

In Midweek Pennant, Cohuna 2/3 played Cohuna Golf 2.

Terri Hancock’s team defeated that of Irene Tresize, 22 to 19, indicating a very close game.

Kay Currie’s team drew with that of Cheryl Baker, 22-all.

Great competition between these four teams, well done to all.

There was a good crowd of spectators present last Thursday to watch the final of the club’s mixed pairs. Trevor Dehne and his sister, Barb Hildebrand, came out the winners, defeating Marg and Jeff Reade.

Congratulations to the winners and well done to the runners-up.

Kerang

ON a warm Tuesday, Black Duck Social Triples took place with 24 players confronting the conditions.

The winners for the afternoon was D. Randell, P. Waters and P. Basile with their two wins and +17 being the best result.

The highest second-game winners were A. Marshall, F. Macquire and R. Hipwell with a nice eight-shot win.

Once again the jackpot did not go off with the lucky number being -14 which now balloons out to $561.

So if you want a slice of the action and a chance at the jackpot, come on down and enjoy a great time with some of the finer citizens Kerang has to offer.

Kerang had three teams playing this week with Kerang 4 earning a rest. Not all smooth sailing as Kerang 1 went down to a determined Leitchville, with Kerang 2 and Kerang 3 greeting the judges in the winners’ circle against Pyramid Hill and Wakool discretely.

Kerang 1 had a day they’d rather forget with only team Wilson claiming the two points by four shots.

Team Hancock down by three shots and team Pocock by three shots also, put paid to our chances of victory, going down by two in the end.

Leitchville were the better team on the day and proves that anything can happen on a bowling green. With other results proving beneficial to us, we still hold onto second spot with the last game against Gunbower coming up. Kerang 1 will be treating this as a mini final for practice when the whips are cracking in a fortnight.

Kerang 2 hosted Pyramid Hill and cemented their position in the four with a handsome 25-shot win with all rinks up.

Team Pascoe had a battle on their hands against Mann and came out on top by six shots.

Team Frantz took on Noelker and finished to the good by seven, with the anchoring role played beautifully by Team Hein getting home by 12 shots.

This week Kerang 2 take on Barham 2 who lead the competition. So let’s finish the year with a confidence-boosting win for your date with finals action!

Kerang 3 took on top-of-the-table Wakool on our home deck, and walked off the green grinning like Cheshire Cats.

So they should too, with a win like that instilling a belief they can shape what happens in the finals.

The four is set but here is the kicker. It is still wide open for where Kerang 3 finish as there is only one point separating first and fourth.

Kerang 3 is sitting pretty on top with these four teams evenly matched.

Kerang 3 won by 20 shots with two rinks getting up. Team Rosewall went down by two shots with team Byrne prevailing by five shots to nullify the loss.

Enter Team Coobs and with another sterling performance claiming the title of biggest rink win for this week with a 17-shot landslide. Any pats on the back will be well received I would imagine.

With all teams away this week, Kerang Bowling Club hierarchy would like to see all pennant players and significant others come together to support Sporties after play Saturday evening.

We will all gather in the beer garden or main bar and have at least one drink together as a club.

So after play, do not come to the bowling club like normal, please head down to the venue and make yourself comfortable there and celebrate what has been another successful season.

I am sure there will be a great atmosphere with levity at an all-time high. Have a meal there if you feel it is warranted.

The Club Singles Championships have now concluded with two new champions joining the ranks of a prestigious list of gold-letter names on the club honour boards.

The ladies section was won in fine style by our enthusiastic, most practiced and most tournament player, Som Pascoe, who defeated past champion Barb Williams in the final.

Alyne Fagg, our hard-working board chairman, who does a plethora of work in every facet of the club, took out the men’s section title defeating Kim Watts, who joined our club this season. Both well-deserved wins.

Alyne and Som will be competing in the Champion of Champions competition at Kerang Bowling Club on February 11 with the semi-finals and finals played on February 18. Play starts at 9.30am but Alyne and Som will have to wait on the result of the Wakool v Cohuna Golf match to find who they play.

The winner of the Champion of Champions event in both ladies and men’s sections will determine who goes on to represent Northern District Playing Area at the regional finals, which will be played at Murray Downs March 8 to 11.

We are looking for a large contingent of supporters to come and barrack for our worthy champions.

Kerang Golf

IT was a busy week at Kerang Golf Bowls, with the greens used nearly every day.

The highlight of the week was the hosting of all teams at home for Saturday Pennant, the day after our traditional Arnoldt and Greenwood Australia Day Triples tournament, and what a great weekend it turned out to be.

The tournament on Australia Day was well supported and everyone had a fabulous day, which started with lamb burgers for lunch, courtesy of Choice Cut Butchers and Graeme Hayes Real Estate.

The following day, both Division 1 and Division 2 consolidated their finals aspirations with wins over the Barham teams, who were in higher ladder positions. Division 3 played a tied game against Pyramid Hill.

The Australia Day Triples event has been running for many years and dates back to when there was not even a public holiday on Australia Day, but usually the following Monday, to create a long weekend.

It has been sponsored by our local Ford dealership ever since the event was created, and thanks are extended to Jason and the Arnoldt and Greenwood company for their longstanding support of bowls at Kerang Golf.

This year 22 teams entered, with great support from the local playing area, as well as from Charlton, Quambatook and Lake Boga.

After three games, two combinations finished und with three wins and 75 points each, so a countback on shots up was needed to find the winners.

With 29 shots up, Frank Ritchie, Dallas Mathers and Len Mathers took home the winners’ prize, from the Charlton trio of Kevin Willey, Dale McCallum and Jeff Cox with only 12 shots up.

In third place, with two wins and a tie, and 64 points, were Gary Wishart, John Cunningham and Gary Kennedy from Barham.

The best last-game score was 27 points and the Wakool group of Andrew and Sharon Stewart and Roddo Chalmers took out this consolation prize.

The chocolates to Quambatook’s Wayne Cook, Steve Wilson and Geoff Dunne who had a very enjoyable day. Many thanks to all who attended the tournament and made for a great day.

In Saturday Pennant, the Division 1 team were fighting to hold their position in the top four, against the strong Barham combination, and what a great result for the home team.

After a close, tight struggle over the first few ends, the Frank Ritchie and Ritchie Murray rinks took over, raced to big leads by the 10th end and eventually went on to record big wins against their rivals.

Frank, Jim McLeish, Lloyd Murray and Lorraine Ritchie won 41/12 and also won the Royal Hotel vouchers for this week.

Ritchie, Rob Fisher, Brett Hipworth and Ian Chales also won easily, 33/12, and the Howard McClelland team had close tussle all day to go down by two shots. A big win for this team and now the finals beckon in two weeks’ time.

Division 2 were also striving to maintain their recently gained fourth spot against the top team, and what a great performance they put in.

The Graeme Hayes team led the way with a 10-shot win, Laurie Gray was seven in front at the end and Ronnie McKerrow was done by five, so a 12-shot win overall and a finals spot almost assured.

Division 3 played Pyramid Hill on the Alec Mitchell green, only 37 days after it was top dressed in December.

This was a game that had no bearing on finals, so a great afternoon was had by all.

Amazingly, the result of the game went down to the last bowl, on the final rink, with the Pyramid Hill team getting the last shot to level the scores overall – a fitting result to a close game.

Both Gary Borg and Noel Robertson had seven-shot wins and after Judy McKerrow had to retire during the game. Her rink couldn’t hold on and were beaten by 14 shots.

The Midweek team had a great win on Wednesday over the Barham 3 team, who are the ladder leaders.

Judy McKerrow’s rink was the standout with an 11-shot win and Lorraine Ritchie’s team managed a tied game, after leading by one shot playing the last end.

This team is now in second position on the ladder, with the last of the preliminary rounds tomorrow – well done.

The second night of the Ian “Squizzy” Taylor Memorial Barefoot Bowls was completed last Wednesday. The winners on a countback were Taylor Ashton Painting, with Captain Fonzy, Rob Fabry, “Wheels” O’Neill and “Digger” Peck improving on their runner-up performance the previous week.

Their 30 points and 10 shots up was good enough to relegate Hayes Real Estate to second spot, as they only won their two games by six shots. Chocolates to Team Stacey led by Terry Stacey.

The ladder is topped by Taylor Aston Painting with 60 points, followed by Hayes Real Estate on 47, and Lake Charm Boat Club, Royal Hotel and Lions, all on 37 points.

Thursday social only had eight players but again, some club matches were completed.

The 2-4-2 pairs competition was won by Trevor Linton and Dale Spinks who won two games and lost one, to take out the top prize, from Laurie Gray and Carol Pay who had a win, a draw and a loss to win the runners-up prize on a countback. Chocolates to Marlene Rawson and Craig Hicks.

The Club Championship playoff for the Cliff Blythman Memorial Trophy will be played on Friday at 3pm between Howard McClelland and Ritchie Murray – good luck to both players.

Members are reminded that some B Grade and Pairs games need to be completed by this Sunday.

The match committee asks that these games get played to avoid the red pen having to be used.
