Across the Greens

Cohuna

THE club has been a hive of activity over the past week or so, with the home-and-away pennant games winding up and various club championships being decided.

The Anderson family have been out in force with three generations playing in the same pennant team recently.

Gordon and Barbara, their son, Colin, and his son, Clayton, all competed against Cohuna Golf and apparently did very well too.

Clayton stayed playing bowls last year and his dad this year, while the senior Andersons have many years of experience between them.

Colin’s wife, Gayle, has also started bowls and will be jostling for a place in team Anderson no doubt.

Our bowlers have been out and about as well, visiting other clubs and having success too.

Recently, the team of Frank Tonn, Rhonda Ballard and Kaye Holmes were the only three-game winners at the Leitchville triples evening.

Tuesday social bowls attracted 22 players with the winning team of Terri Hancock, Marg Main, Kaye Holmes and Lynda Smith being the 51-point winners.

Then in the afternoon, the the final of the men’s club pairs was played. After an extremely close tussle, the winners were Rick Parr and Ian Howard with a one-shot victory over Wayne Brooks and Trevor Dehne. Great bowling and very keen competition.

Also decided during the week was the club triples, which was a very close match with nothing in it.

There was one shot the difference coming into the last end. After 15 ends, the score was 11 to 9, with the winners being Rick Parr, Ian Howard and Rhonda Ballard.

Gallant in defeat was the team of Frank Tonn, Bryan Main and Mike Hoffman.

The final round of Midweek Pennant was played last Wednesday.

In Division 1, Cohuna 1 defeated Kerang at Kerang, Cohuna 2 went down to Cohuna Golf at Cohuna. Also played at Cohuna, Division 2 defeated Barham 2 on a perfect sunny day with the greens running beautifully.

Last Friday the final of the men’s club fours was decided.

Congratulations to the winning team of Brian Bowles, Noel Hosking, Mark Southern and Trevor Dehne, and well done to the runners-up team of Frank Tonn, Ray Storey, Ian Howard and Rob Wilson.

Trevor Dehne played in place of Keith Foreman who was unavailable on the day.

Saturday Pennant has concluded and midweek finishes up on Wednesday, and then it’s finals time for those teams who have made it that far.

Good luck to all teams and fingers crossed for some great results.

Kerang

ON a dry warm Tuesday, black duck social triples took place with 19 players.

It was that man Lindsay Hein saluting with his merry men in “Gorgeous” George Fenton and Martin Infantino, with two wins and a margin of six shots.

Alyne Fagg, along with Darold Warke and Zander Burton, claimed the biggest margin for the second game.

We loved having Darold back around the club again and hope that he keeps up attendance.

We welcome Zander Burton as well and hope we get a couple of pennant players in the near future.

The jackpot continues to be nurtured along nicely after not being claimed again. If you want to play, put your name down on the list in the clubrooms or call the club before 11am on Tuesday.

We had three teams participate this week with Kerang 4 not having enough to get a team together.

Kerang 1 were met over at Gunbower with beautiful conditions, for what is normally a good time with our hosts. We were able to get the three rinks up with the final margin being 38 shots.

Team Pocock won by four shots against Dickins, while team Wilson fought hard for their 10-shot victory over Hogan. Team Hancock struck a bit of form at the right time to prevail against Davis by 24 shots.

The win secures second spot and, after not making finals last season, Kerang 1 will be hungry for success. We will now be meeting old foes and competition nemesis Cohuna Golf in the second semi-final with the winner guaranteed a grand-final berth. Results this year have been a Kerang 1 win and a draw.

Kerang 2 got a nice little reality check when they ventured to Barham 2 under the Riverdome. All rinks went down in a savage display of draw bowling by 51 shots overall.

Our twos now know what level they need to take their game to, in order to push the top sides. Team Hein was the only close game going down by three shots in a tight tussle against Patterson.

The other two games were somewhat blowouts with the margins being 19 and 29, which tells me that there weren’t many bowls in the head.

Bowls in the head consistently is what builds pressure. So let’s concentrate on that when we confront Kerang Golf on Saturday in the knockout final. The ledger sits at 1-1 so we will need to bowl somewhere near our best to get the chocolates.

Kerang 3 sojourned to Cohuna 4 and came away with a positive result with two wins and a draw.

Team Sutherland fought tooth and nail against Marshall and couldn’t be separated after 25 ends of competition.

Team Byrne and opposing rink in Allen traded blows and finished four shots to the good. The man of the moment Michael John Francis Patrick Coobs and his team continue on their way continuing their destructive season with another 20-shot conquest against Mathers.

This result has Kerang 3 sitting pretty in second spot and qualifies them to play in the second semi-final against Barham 4. This year’s games between the two have resulted in two wins to Kerang 3.

Kerang 4 had the indignation of a forfeit to Pyramid Hill 2. Not the ideal way to finish the season but it is a sign of the times.

We need to inject some young blood into the ranks. So if you have mates who don’t have much to do on a Saturday arvo, get them down to the club and sign them up.

The finals start at Kerang this weekend for Divisions 1 and 2 with Division 3 heading to Gunbower. Let’s rip in and give this finals series a red-hot crack.

We will need some volunteers for various roles Friday and Saturday. If you can help in any way please speak with Alyne Fagg or president Frantz. Or even Jeffrey Jackson if you wish. We will need a few blokes to help put up pergolas with a premise that there will be refreshments at bar prices afterwards.

I would like to congratulate all the teams who have qualified for finals action this year and wish the three Kerang teams all the best in their premiership quest.

Hopefully by the time this goes to print for your perusal, another very successful Athol Stephens Triples has been held with winners and other mentionables noted in next week’s Gannawarra Times. Also, we need markers for the Northern District Champion of Champions Singles to be held this Sunday and the following Sunday.

If you aren’t doing anything, pop on down to the club and witness some of the best bowlers this region has to offer. We would like to wish our very own Club Champion in Alyne Fagg all the best in this prestigious event.

In midweek pennant last week, Division 1 didn’t have a very good day and were beaten by Cohuna 1 82/55.

This week they travel over to Cohuna Golf to play in their last home and home round. Finishing fourth on the ladder, let’s hope they all have a successful day to complete the season with a good win before playing in the finals.

Division 2 had a win over Pyramid Hill by 15 points overall. They have a bye this week and missed out by one point to make the final four. Thanks to everyone who played in Division 2 this year.

Over the past week, we have been very busy at our club catering for funerals of past members. It never ceases to amaze me how many members rally around making slices, sponges, cakes, sandwiches and also giving their time to work in the kitchen to serve a wonderful array of delicious food to our guests.

This weekend we have been preparing for the classic triples with many giving their time to make sure the buildings and surrounds are in top condition and buying, ordering, prepping all the food in readiness for our annual tournament. Many thanks to all who worked at the club on Sunday.

On Saturday, we will be welcoming everyone to our greens to play and watch the Division 1 and 2 Saturday pennant finals.

On Friday, there will be a working bee at 10am to set up for the final so please come along to help.

On Saturday, we will be making sandwiches for afternoon tea. Good luck to everyone playing in the finals next Saturday.

Kerang Golf

A BIT quieter this week with all pennant teams playing away from home for the final game of Saturday pennant, returning to our sponsor, the Royal Hotel, for the end-of-season festivities.

Divisions 1 and 3 travelled to Leitchville and both came home with losses. Division 1 had a close contest all day with overall scores never being far apart.

Howard McClelland’s team finished with a 15-shot win against Ken Dehne, Frank Ritchie lost on the last end with two match winning bowls from his opponent Roy Dehne, and the Ritchie Murray rink had a day they would rather forget against Roma Opie.

Overall, down by four shots, 68/72, and only two points. However, this was enough to hold their position in the final four, with Cohuna losing a close game against Cohuna Golf.

A first semi-final this week against Barham at Kerang.

Division 2 went to Cohuna Golf and also came home wounded, going down by a solitary shot against Cohuna Golf 3.

Graeme Hayes again led the way with an eight-shot win and “new” skipper Jeff Anderson won by seven shots, but not enough to cover Ronnie McKerrow’s 16-shot loss.

Finishing in fourth place puts this team in the finals for the first time in many years – well done. They will play Kerang 2 on their own greens, so a big effort will be required.

In Division 3, Noel Robertson’s rink of Allison Medson, Dale Spinks and Craig Hicks won by 18 shots, and therefore won the Royal Hotel vouchers for this week.

However, Leitchville were too strong on the other rinks and a 10-shot loss overall was the final result.

Last Wednesday, the midweek team played Leitchville on their home green, with second place on the Division 2 ladder, and a double chance in the finals, up for grabs.

With a 10-shot victory, the Lorraine Ritchie rink led the way to a close overall win, as the Judy McKerrow combination went down by seven shots.

The third night of barefoot bowls was completed last Wednesday evening, with a few new faces enjoying their game.

Again, the Taylor Ashton Painting team took out the major prize with two wins and 30 points. Well done to “Fonzy” Taylor and “Wheels” O’Neill, who are regulars, but this week they recruited “Casey” Wilson and newcomer Chris Bland to help them win the Choice Cut Butchers vouchers.

Runners-Up on a countback were the Royal Hotel team of Rob Fisher, Ritchie Murray, David Conlan and Paul Saunders, who just pipped the Lions on 29 points. Chocolates to Kerang Truck Repairs.

Taylor Ashton Painting top the ladder with 90 points, followed by Royal Hotel 67, Lions 66 and Hayes Real Estate 64.

Thursday social was won by Craig Hicks and Marlene Rawson, with Bryce McLeish, John Duckworth and Mari Miller getting the encouragement chocolates, easily. Thursday social is open to everyone, with registration at 12.45pm for a start at 1pm. Come along and enjoy.

Club games are continuing, which is great to see, and members are encouraged to get these matches completed by the due dates.

The trip away to Bendigo is being organised by Jimmy, and will be held on the weekend of March 2 and 3. If you haven’t registered your interest, see Jimmy for more details.

The Men’s Club Championship was completed last Friday with Howard McClelland getting off to a flying start against Ritchie Murray and then holding a commanding lead until late when Ritchie made a surge, but the gap was too large.

“Aldo” won 25/15 to win his fourth club championship at Kerang Golf. Congratulations.

Entries are required for the Mixed Pairs Championship, to be played next Monday evening. Please arrange your team and put names on the list on the noticeboard.
