Pennant finals start

PENNANT finals have rolled around again in the Northern District, with Kerang Bowling Club hosting two sections of semi-finals on Saturday.

Cohuna Golf held off a determined Kerang challenge to win by six shots in Division 1, while in the boilover of the day, Kerang Golf eliminated Barham, scraping in by just three.

Kerang will meet town rivals Kerang Golf in Saturday’s preliminary final.

In Division 2, Barham fared better, defeating Cohuna Golf by 70 shots to 62.

Kerang were too strong for Kerang Golf, 96 to 64. Cohuna Golf to meet Kerang in that preliminary.

All games to be played at Kerang Golf Bowls Club.

Gunbower were chosen to host the Division 3 semi-finals, where Kerang continues their good run, beating Barham 76 to 54, while Wakool had a big win over Cohuna 98 to 69.

Barham and Wakool will meet on Saturday, also at Kerang Golf.

Meanwhile, Kerang hosted day one of the Northern District’s Champion of Champions event on Sunday.

Champions, both men and women, played to bring the field in each section down to four.

In the round 1 ladies matches, Rhonda Ballard (Cohuna) defeated Jo White (Gunbower), Lyn McNaul (Wakool) defeated Nolene Brown (Cohuna Golf), Roma Opie (Leitchville) overcame Jean Mann (Pyramid Hill) and Jean Fairchild (Barham) beat Marlene Orr (Kerang Golf) in a cliffhanger.

To bring the field back to four, Som Pascoe (Kerang) then accounted for Lyn McNaull.

Next Sunday, Opie plays Pascoe, while Ballard meets Fairchild.

In the men’s section, Lionel Mann (Pyramid) defeated Tony Cantwell (Leitchville), Frank Trezise (Cohuna Golf) scraped in against Shane McNaull (Wakool), John Hogan (Gunbower) won on a forfeit from his Cohuna opponent and Brody Harker (Barham) came from well behind to defeat Aldo McLelland (Kerang Golf).

Frank Trezise then continued on to the final four by accounting for Alyne Fagg (Kerang), and will play Lionel Mann on Sunday, with Hogan to play Harker.
