Across the Greens

Cohuna

THERE was another good roll-up of bowlers for Tuesday’s social bowls.

The weather and the greens were perfect so why wouldn’t you be out enjoying the game and the companionship?

Ian Howard’s team were in great form, winning both of their games. His team was made up of Ursula Kirby, Marilyn Flinders and Colin Anderson who all played well.

It’s great to see our new bowlers enjoying success.

The following day saw the end of the home-and-away games for Midweek Pennant with a mixed bag of results.

Division 1 played Barham at Cohuna and came away with the chocolates. Wayne Brooke’s team won by 22 shots, and Mike Hoffman’s team got home by nine shots. Barham won the final game with Frank Tonn’s team losing by just two shots.

The two teams meet again at Pyramid Hill and some keen bowling is assured.

Division 1 Team 2 have come to the end of their season. They played their last game at Pyramid Hill and have been showing a lot of promise towards the end of the season. They will be looking to capitalise on this late form next season.

Over the weeks, many bowlers were called upon to fill in when needed and the club really appreciates this commitment.

Last Saturday, Division 3 played at Gunbower in the elimination final against Wakool. The weather was quite warm with a bit of a breeze and the greens were looking in top condition.

Wakool were too good on the day and proceeds now to the next stage of the finals.

Ken Strachan’s team played a nail-biting draw, and Greg Beck’s and Travis Howard’s teams were both beaten. Trav’s team had a shaky start but fought back to lose by only 4 points. There was some great bowling in front of a very supportive crowd.

The Champion of Champion’s event began on Sunday. Our club was represented by Rhonda Ballard who moves on to the next round after defeating Jo White from Gunbower 26/14.

Congratulations to Rhonda and well done to Jo.

The second round is on at Kerang on Sunday and we wish Rhonda all the best.

Kerang

THE first week of finals action took place at the pristine and very well presented Kerang Bowling Club.

Well done and congratulations goes to the volunteers who helped out in any way to help the day run as smoothly as it did.

Kerang had three teams participating and came away with two wins and a defeat.

Kerang 1 had a narrow loss to Cohuna Golf 1 by six shots with one rink getting up.

Kerang 2 had a conclusive win over crosstown rivals in Kerang Golf 2 and Kerang 3 have booked themselves a berth in the grand final.

Kerang 1 and Kerang 2 will now play Kerang Golf 1 and Cohuna Golf 2, respectively, to try and get all three teams in the big dance.

As aforementioned, Kerang 1 had a tussle on their hands from the outset. We can’t give head starts to teams of Cohuna Golfs calibre.

Team Hancock was the rink that got the win over young gun Keely by five shots after trailing by 10 shots in what was a gutsy performance.

Team Wilson went down agonisingly close by two shots to Hammond and team Pocock went down by nine shots to Fletcher.

Kerang 1 will now play Kerang Golf at Kerang Golf on Saturday to try to atone for last weeks loss to have another go at booking a grand final berth.

Kerang 2 had a comfortable win over sister club Kerang Golf by 32 shots in a two-rink win.

Team Hein had a resounding victory over McKerrow with a 41-12 scoreline.

Team Pascoe held Hayes at bay with a six-shot win with team Frantz narrowly missing out by two shots against Anderson.

Kerang 2 will now move into the preliminary final to play against Cohuna Golf 2 in what promises to be a dour struggle.

Kerang 3 have successfully booked a date with destiny after winning their semi final to go straight through to the grand final. They had a two-rink win with team Rosewall going down to Goodwin by a solitary shot.

Team Byrne were more than serviceable being triumphant by seven shots and team Coobs once again anchored the overall result with a 16-shot win. They will have to wait until after the preliminary final to find out who they will encounter on February 24.

If you haven’t got a lot on Saturday, grab the picnic basket and head on out to Kerang Golf Club to support the two Kerang teams on display.

The Athol Stephens Triples was an outrageous success with 36 teams taking part.

Winner of the two-day event was a composite team comprising Aldo McLelland, Beau Fawcett and Andrew Whately. Runners-up were the Kyabram combination of the Boswood brothers and Mal Williams. The atmosphere was great to be apart of with many people praising the greens.

Last week was the final home and home game before the finals begin in Midweek Pennant. Division 1 played Cohuna Golf and were beaten by 12 shots.

Tomorrow they travel to Pyramid Hill to play Cohuna Golf in the semi-final. Let’s hope they rally around and bring home a good win. In the other final Cohuna 1 plays Barham 1.

In Division 2 Barham 3 play Kerang Golf and Leitchville play Cohuna Golf.

The Champion of Champions was held at Kerang Bowling Club on Sunday with great bowling witnessed by all who attended. Many thanks to everyone who helped set up the greens, the morning cuppa, marking, scoring or umpiring.

The players in the semis next week are: Roma Opie vs Som Pascoe, Lionel Mann vs Frank Trezise, Rhonda Ballard vs Jean Fairchild and John Hogan vs Brodie Harker. Good luck to all.

Play begins at 9.30am so come on down and see another wonderful display of great bowling.

Kerang Golf

THE Saturday Pennant semi-finals have been completed and in Division 1, Cohuna Golf have moved through to the grand final after defeating Kerang.

Kerang Golf were represented in the first semi-final against Barham and came out victorious in a close tussle, after only taking the overall lead in the last few ends.

Frank Ritchie’s rink led the way, with a three shot win over Brody Harker, after being in front for most of the afternoon.

Ritchie Murray and team had a bad start to be 10 shots behind, twice during the game, but won the most of the last few ends to get back to a loss of only five shots against Lyndon Shadbolt.

The last rink to finish was Howard McClelland’s and after winning seven of the last 10 ends, came out six-shot winners against Jason Lunghusen. Overall, a 67 to 63 win for Kerang Golf and a preliminary final berth against Kerang on Saturday on the Kerang Golf greens.

In Division 2, Kerang Golf were also playing in the first semi against Kerang. However, the news is not as bright for this team as only the Jeff Anderson skipped rink finished in front, winning 27/24 against Ross Frantz. Graeme Hayes and team battled valiantly against Som Pascoe, going down by six shots, but Ronnie McKerrow’s rink was given a lesson against Lindsay Hein.

This is the first time for many years that Division 2 has made the finals, so well done on a great season.

The midweek team plays in the finals tomorrow at Pyramid Hill and will be hoping for a win in the second semi against Barham 3 and straight in to the grand final.

The fourth night of the Ian “Squizzy” Taylor Barefoot Bowls was completed last Wednesday, and again, it was great to see a couple more new faces on the green.

The winners on the night were Hayes Real Estate, with 32 points. Graeme, Travis Hipworth, Dave Wood and Rodney Pascoe will be enjoying some Choice Cut Butchers produce during the week.

Runners-up were Ian’s Allstars, with 30 points. Team members, Ian and Andrew Charles, Lloyd Murray and Jordon Robertson finished with 30 points.

Chocolates to Team Stacey, but they had left the scene, so Lake Charm Boat Club accepted the chocolates.

The ladder has Taylor Ashton Painting on top with 109 points, followed by Hayes Real Estate on 96, Royal Hotel 84 and Lions 83. At the other end, Kerang Truck Repairs have “leapfrogged” Team Stacey in the battle for the coveted spoon.

Thursday social continues to attract good numbers and after the regulatory two games Joycey Tuohey, Ken Pay and Noel Robertson came out winners, on a countback from Jeff Anderson, Sonia McLeish and Greg Tate. The chocolates to John Duckworth, Marlene Rawson and Dale Spinks. Social bowls is open to everyone – 12.45pm registration for a 1pm start.

Club member Howard McClelland was a member of the winning team at Kerang Bowling Club’s Athol Steven Classic Triples last week. Teamed with Graeme Fawcett and Andrew Whately from Marong, they won on a countback of shots up, after winning six of the seven games. Well done Aldo.

The Northern District Playing Area Champion of Champions was played on the Kerang greens on Sunday and Kerang Golf’s Marlene Orr lost to Jean Fairchild in a cliffhanger – 25/22, with both ladies having winning chances on the last few ends. Howard McClelland had a great game against Brody Harker, until Brody took control after the 16th end and closed the game out with some excellent bowling. The final score was Brody 25 to Aldo 16.

All hands on deck for Saturday, as Kerang Golf host the preliminary finals of the Saturday Pennant in all divisions. With our own Division 1 playing, all club members will be asked to help, during the week, setting up and on the day with scoreboards, bar and general duties.

The mixed championship was played last night, so results will be in next week’s notes.
