Cohuna Golf tipped for title

THE greens are getting a final check and the bowls are getting a polish ahead of the Northern District bowls grand finals on Saturday.

With all matches scheduled for a slick surface at Cohuna Bowling Club, spectators should see a feast of great bowls.

In Division 1, regular contenders Cohuna Golf meet with surprise packets of this season in Kerang Golf.

Skippers in Ritchie, McLelland and Murray have lifted the efforts of their club mates and are bound to trouble the well-honed Cohuna Golf team.

With the greater finals experience, and a seemingly greater depth of players, Cohuna Golf may just get the flag.

Barham all season have laid claim to the Division 2 title, and will be out to prove that against Cohuna Golf.

The Golfers only gave ground late in their semi-final clash, and a steadier finish will even the odds. However, with seasoned players of the likes of Charlie Bagg, Shane Manners and Chris Hope, the Barham team deserves to be favourite.

Division 3 is a Barham versus Kerang clash, with the Kerang team taking the points at their last meeting. Mick Coobs and Ken Byrne have been in great touch, and should match any challenge from Barham. Perhaps a Kerang victory to spread the pennants around?

But the eventual margin will be minimal, whichever way it goes.

Divisions 2 and 3 start earlier at 1pm to enable post-match presentations to proceed without hold -ps.

The Champion of Champions event finished on Sunday, with the semi-finals and finals at Kerang.

In the ladies section, Roma Opie (Leitchville) came up trumps, defeating firstly Som Pacoe and then Jean Fairchild, in a superb display of disciplined bowling.

The well-credentialed Brody Hawker (Barham) defeated John Hogan in the semi-final and then Frank Trezise to take home this year’s top singles trophy.
