Across the Greens

Kerang

LAST Tuesday dawned fair and bright with the promise of a good day for Black Duck Triples.

Thirty players turned out hopeful of a win on the greens, or a lucky random draw for the jackpot of $597.

Congratulations to the team of Lindsay Hein, Marlene Rawson and Joyce Tuohey, which was the best of the two-game winners being 19 shots up for the day. Well done to Alyne Fagg, Peter Waters and Rosie Laughlin who rallied in their second game to be the highest winners with 10 shots up.

Some of us were disappointed on both fronts but with the jackpot number of +6 unclaimed, we breathed a sigh of relief with the promise of fronting up again next Tuesday to chase the elusive jackpot, which has now grown to $627.

In March, we switch to afternoon play for Black Duck. This means that today, names need to be in by 11am and play will start at 12.30pm. There is a list on the notice board in the club house if you would like to enter in advance.

The grand final of Midweek Pennant was to have been on our greens last Wednesday but with the forecast of “catastrophic weather conditions”, games were postponed until Wednesday.

Excellent bowling will be on display when, in Division 1, Cohuna versus Barham and in Division 2, Kerang Golf will play Barham.

We wish everyone good bowling as they vie for the coveted Opie-Woods and Maisie Murphy shields.

The ladies 100-up was played last Tuesday with Som Pascoe continuing on her winning way, taking out the title for that as well as the club singles.

As Easter approaches, we have received good entries from visitors keen to play on our excellent greens prepared by our greenkeeper, Shane.

We would welcome entries from bowlers in the local area to play in the tournament, which runs from March 29 to April 2. You can find entry forms in the box outside the office.

Thanks to our ND umpires co-ordinator, Yvonne Eckhardt, who conducted re-accreditation sessions with Alyne, Jeff and Yvonne from our club and Rose and Lorraine from Pyramid Hill on Tuesday afternoon. All players are encouraged to participate in the umpiring tutorials as umpires are essential to the game and the knowledge gained will enhance your enjoyment of the game.

The next meeting of the ladies section will be on March 12 at 10.30am.

Kerang Golf

A QUIET week at Kerang Golf Bowls, after the completion of Saturday Pennant and the postponement of the Midweek grand finals until Wednesday, because of the very hot day last week.

Good luck to our Division 2 team, who are endeavouring to win back-to-back flags in this division. Please get along and support your fellow members at Kerang on Wednesday.

With the scorching weather last Wednesday, our barefoot bowls was also called off, so Wednesday evening is the final night, with the presentation of trophies and the Ian “Squizzy” Taylor Memorial Shield to the winning team.

The annual trip away has been held this past weekend, with a happy group travelling to Marong and visiting the sights of Bendigo and surrounds. Obviously, what happens on the trip, stays on the trip, but next week’s notes will have an MVP named for the weekend – watch this space.

Thursday social bowls was enjoyed by 15 players with a couple of 100-up matches being played as well. Winners were Laurie Gray and Trevor Burmeister with wins in both their games and a total of 14 shots up. The runners-up also won both their games, but only by a total of 11 shots, so had to settle for second prize. Chocolates this week to Marlene Rawson and Mari Miller.

The match committee are pleased that all the club games are being completed by the due dates.

The men’s pairs final will be played on Thursday evening, between the Charles boys – Andrew and Ian, with their opponents being Howard McClelland and Alan Hird. The 100-up final will be the following week, between Frank Ritchie and Rob Fisher. The B Grade and the fours finals are still to be decided. All games will be posted on the blackboard.

Important reminders for all members that the presentation day, as well as social bowls, will be held on Sunday, April 14.

Also, the annual general meeting will be held, as most of the membership base will be in attendance.

If you would like to be part of the administration of the Kerang Golf Bowls Club, please see any current committee person for more details.

You would be most welcome to join, and enjoy the spoils of being part of the decision-making process for your club.
