Cohuna

SOCIAL bowls was well attended on Tuesday with 24 bowlers enjoying the warm conditions.

There were a number of two-game winners, but the team with the winning points was Sherelyn Barnes, Mary Meredith, Corale Jones and Trevor Kirby. Congratulations on a good day’s bowling.

Life member Rob Wilson celebrated his 80th birthday in fine style recently. Everyone agreed it was a fantastic night with many dressing up in costumes based on their initial.

Lots of fun was had and we all thank Rob and Claire for their generosity, and wish Rob many more happy birthdays to come.

Last Wednesday was the Midweek Pennant Division 1 grand final held at Kerang, between Cohuna and Barham.

There was a great turn out of followers there to support their respective teams. It was a thrilling contest which went down to the wire, Cohuna getting up by two shots after 75 ends.

Cohuna won one game, lost one and drew one, the result being decided on the last bowl. Thanks to Barham for great competition and to Kerang for providing excellent greens and hospitality.

March 17 sees the winning Cohuna team advance to the next round to be played at Euston. We wish them every success but know that win or lose, those who venture north will have a great time.

Today’s social bowls will now be played tomorrow due to forecast extreme heat.

The final of the ladies pairs will also be played tomorrow followed by a light lunch for those who can stay.

Kerang Golf

WHAT an exciting day for our all female Midweek Division 2 team last Wednesday, when they won their second premiership in a row, in this division, with a nail-biting one- shot victory over Barham 3.

With overall scores tied at 36 shots apiece and only the final end between Golf’s Lorraine Ritchie and Barham’s Wendy Cook to be completed, the winning shot was played by Kerang Golf’s second, Marlene Rawson, which held its place as the thirds and skippers tried to get a closer bowl without success, to give this team their back-to-back successes.

It is a credit to the same eight players who won the previous year, and celebrated wildly, to do it all again the following season.

And again, they celebrated as well, with a Hirdy assisted rendition of the winning song, at the final night of Barefoot Bowls later in the day. Well done, team, another flag for the clubhouse wall.

Speaking of barefoot bowls, the final night was a great success, with the winner of the Ian “Squizzy” Taylor Memorial Shield only being decided in the last game.

Eventual winners, the Royal Hotel team, had to overcome the top team, Hayes Real Estate, to claim the ultimate prize after a very close tussle.

Final points saw Royal Hotel on 155, from Hayes Real Estate on 152. In presenting the shield, Zac Taylor said his Pop would be proud to see the continuance of barefoot bowls at his former club and to see everyone having a good time at Kerang Golf.

The Royal Hotel team members were Rob Fisher, Ritchie Murray, David Conlan and Paul Saunders. Their name will now go on to the shield as a permanent record of their success. They were also winners in 2022, with Hayes Real Estate being last year’s winners.

In third place was Ian’s Allstars on 149, followed by Lions 148, Taylor Ashton Painting 139, Hirdy’s Buslines 135, Lake Charm Boat Club 122, Kerang Truck Repairs 103, North Vic Sheds 101 and a top 10 finish for Team Stacey on 55.

The last night was won by Hirdy’s Buslines with 33 points and Alan Hird, Hayley Hird, Dave Moonie and Erin Byrne will enjoy the Choice Cut Butchers produce after winning the vouchers.

Runners up were Ian’s Allstars on 31 points and chocolates to Hayes Real Estate who only achieved six points for the night.

Some club match finals have also been completed with the Men’s 100 Up Final and Men’s Pairs Final played on Thursday.

In the 100 Up final between Frank Ritchie and Rob Fisher started in amazing fashion, with both bowlers playing exceptional draw bowls.

However, Frank’s consistency took control and he drew away to win comfortably.

Frank also won this event, and the Lindsay Stewart Memorial Trophy last year, proving he is one of the top draw bowlers in our playing area.

The B Grade Singles was also completed with Mick Pors pitted against Brett Hipworth. Although Mick hasn’t played a lot of Saturday bowls this year, because of work commitments, he was too consistent for Brett and was a convincing winner, finishing with a four on the final end, for a 21/10 scoreline.

Later on Thursday, the Men’s Pairs final was completed and the twins, Andrew and Ian Charles, came out winners by one shot, over Howard McClelland and Alan Hird, after scoring seven shots on the last two ends. Well done to these two young bowlers who have achieved their first of what could be many successes in the future.

Thursday’s social bowls was 2-4-2 Pairs with Carol Pay and John Duckworth winning both games by 12 shots, and collecting the cash.

Runners up were Trevor Burmeister and Craig Hicks, who also won both their games.

Chocolates to Dale Spinks and John Murphy, with Dale commenting that they bowled well, but without luck.

Last week, some members enjoyed their annual trip away to Marong and Bendigo.

As mentioned, what happens on the trip stays on the trip, but, as always, there seems to be an MVP awarded and the retired shoe salesman won this this year’s prize, easily, after his red wine over-indulgence on night one. Needless to say, his Saturday was slow and quiet.

A reminder again, the presentation day and annual general meeting will be held on Sunday, April 14, after a game of social bowls.

It is hoped that all members will be in attendance to show support for the champions of the previous year and to the incoming office bearers for the next season.
