Across the Greens

Cohuna

WINNERS of last Wednesday’s social bowls were Alison Ainger, Trevor Kirby and Rodney Banister.

Not a large turnout of bowlers but there has been a bit on lately, and those who did play enjoyed the competition.

Also played on Wednesday morning was the final of the ladies club pairs, the winners for 2024 being Rhonda Ballard and Marian Smith.

Mary Meredith and Sue Burgess were the runners-up, congratulations on a great year of bowling.

Congratulations also to Alison Ainger, who along with Roma Opie and Maree Scott, won the triples at Murray Downs last week. The trio now progress to the region finals in Bendigo and we wish them every success.

The 2024 Murray Mallee Region Pennant finals were held last weekend at Euston in NSW.

Congratulations to Cohuna Golf who took out the weekend pennant finals on the Saturday, a great follow on from their local pennant win. The Midweek Region Pennant finals were played on Sunday and Cohuna were victorious over the three games played.

First game was against Birchip with Cohuna winning 66 to 22.

The second game saw Cohuna defeat Murray Downs 43 to 26.

In the third game, Cohuna scored 49 to Mildura’s 41. A huge day and congratulations to both Cohuna teams on their respective successes.

The upcoming autumn tournament to be held at Cohuna next weekend has been full now for a couple of weeks, which means we will have three greens full on every day of the tournament.

There are 38 pairs entered for Friday and 36 teams of four for the classic fours on Saturday and Sunday.

It will be a very busy week ahead with preparations. There are teams/individuals coming from Horsham (24 players), Hopetoun, Murtoa (12), Castlemaine, Bendigo, Rochester/Lockington, Aberfeldie, Moonee Ponds, Essendon, Torquay, Ballarat, Lakes Entrance, Mildura and Swan Hill, plus teams from kindred clubs.

There are a lot of very good bowlers/teams coming so anyone wanting to watch some good bowls is most welcome.

WITH Pennant bowls done and dusted for this season, there are still plenty of opportunities to be active and enjoying fellowship on the greens.

Members have been out and about with black duck triples on Tuesdays continuing with a 12.30pm start and plenty of tournaments in Northern District and beyond.

Names of those wishing to play on Tuesdays will need to be on the noticeboard in the clubhouse or rung through to the club by 11am.

Despite the two-game winners Carol Pay, Laurie Gray and Barb Williams being 19 shots up one week, and Lindsay Hein, Peter Waters and Judith Hipwell being 27 shots up the next, the ever-increasing jackpot prize pool has eluded them.

So, if you would like to give yourself a chance of sharing the $675 today, you know where you need to be, get your name through to Yvonne on 5452 1194.

Some of our members rose early last Wednesday to enjoy breakfast at Leitchville Club and then play in the consistency tournament where the 100-up scoring was used.

Some of us found out how easy it is to drop 10 points on successive ends to go from chocolates to boiled lollies.

It was a great day just the same. Thursday saw us off to Boort to meet with bowlers from different locations and enjoy pairs and fours games.

Barb Williams, Denise Frantz, Helen McBain and Gayle Teasdale were in the money as runners-up to the combined Boort-Calivil team of Joan Earl, Janine Wiltshire, Lyn Lister and Sarah Polack. A delicious meal is an added drawcard when we go over to a Boort tournament.

Saturday’s fine weather lured a few stalwarts out to play triples – assemble by 12.45pm for a 1pm start if you would like to play.

Mari Millar, Allan Davies and Rod Pascoe journeyed to Leitchville’s Star Day on Sunday and had a great day.

A number of caravan clubs from around Victoria gathered in Kerang over the weekend and on Sunday we introduced them to the genteel game of lawn bowls amidst much laughter and fellowship.

In a tribute to our greenkeeper Shane Moffat, they were surprised to find they were playing on grass greens and not carpet. Great job, Shane.

They were keen participants and thoroughly enjoyed our hospitality.

Our annual Easter tournament begins on Friday, March 29 and goes through to the following Tuesday.

The prestigious Greenwood Fours is our star day and a gold letter event which is held on Easter Monday.

We have a good number of visitors already entered, if you would like to join them Alyne Fagg (0428 521 296) will happily take your entries.

There are entry forms in the box outside the club office.

It is great to see everybody’s mate Jackie out and about the neighbourhood again. We expect to see you visiting the club today, Jackie.

Thanks to all for their care and concern last week.

Congratulations to Cohuna Golf on winning the regional pennant title and to Cohuna for taking out the Midweek Pennant section at Euston over the weekend.

Let’s see if Northern District can carry off a double at the state finals at Moama.

Kerang Golf

THE finals of the men’s fours competition was played last Wednesday evening.

The Lloyd Murray team started brilliantly and led by as much as eight shots after six ends.

Consistent bowling from Ian and Andrew Charles and Graeme Hayes saw them forge clear to win 18/10.

Runners-up Frank Ritchie, Jim McLeish, Ken Pay and Laurie Gray were left in their opponents’ wake, after the initial onslaught.

The last of the club matches will be the ladies pairs which was being played yesterday, so results will be in next week’s notes.

Some of the Midweek girls have had a celebration of their two-peat success at Lake Charm – thanks to Judy and Ron for hosting.

Thursday social was washed out, so a “lucky” card draw was used to find the winners, with Jim McLeish, Dave Wood and Lorraine Douglass getting the “big” money.

Second draw to Sonia McLeish, John Duckworth and “Curly” Curtis. No encouragement chocolates this week.

Our first Saturday social was attended by a small crew and an enjoyable afternoon was had by all.

No winners, but social bowls will continue on Thursdays and Saturdays, until the local football commences and will then revert to Sundays.

All members are welcome and an invitation is extended to all bowlers to join in.

A reminder to all bowlers, not only the Kerang Golf members, that Kerang’s Easter tournament is nearly upon us, so get your entries in.

There are events on all days of Easter, starting on Good Friday, and finishing on Easter Tuesday with their black duck triples.

And, not long after, the Anzac Day triples will be held at Kerang Golf.

This is a most popular event, so get your teams organised and put your entries on the sheet on the noticeboard.

The annual general meeting is on Sunday, April 14, after the presentation of trophies and a game of bowls.

It would be great to see all members attending this day.

Quambatook

THE Labour Day tournament was completed last Monday with the triples event being played in the morning, due to the forecast hot conditions. The winning team on the day was John Keeley, Ron Eckhart and Steve Brown from Cohuna Golf Bowls.

The club would like to thank it’s sponsors and everyone who made the weekend a success.

The Norm Huxtable Memorial 100-up singles was played at the weekend.

Played under a handicap system, there were some very close matches and a few upsets.

In the finish, it was Mick Coleman against Phil Eddy in the final.

Phil had a good head start and it took quite a while for Mick to run him down, but Mick eventually pulled away to take out the title.

The club pairs event is the last one on the calendar and this will be played after Easter.
