Trophy night

Cohuna Golf

AS the season begins to wind down, the ladies celebrated their last day with a game of bowls followed by a great luncheon.

Lovely to have some past players return to swell the lunch crowd even further.

Winners of the bowls were the combination of Helen Hall, Glenda Bowles, Joan Atkinson and Merrilee Moss, with all games played having extra close results.

On Thursday, the club staged the Russ McLoughlan Memorial triples, run in conjunction with the pie and soup series.

A terrific crowd attended, including many of the McLoughlan family and friends. At the end of play, Julie McLoughlan assisted president Tucker in presenting trophies, firstly to Peter Vander Zande, Noel Hosking and Keith Foreman (winners), then Pat Quinn, John Prout and Neil Simmonds (runner-up), and finally Peter and Rhonda Bibby with Gwen Campbell (third place).

This week play moves to Cohuna (on Friday) followed by Leitchville and Gunbower.

During the week, the hard-working ladies ran their annual street raffle, which was again most successful due to the generosity of local shoppers. Winners were Sam Morris, Anne Evans and Lorna Stuchbree.

Members have still been to tournaments far and wide, with president Tucker taking a team to Beaufort Golf for the Waverly Shield competition. Suffice to say, a good day was enjoyed by all, and even better, we are down to host this event next year.

Pat and Jason collected some prize money at Kerang, while Peter, Ian Coates and Frank Trezise came second in the Sun Centre Classic at Swan Hull Racecourse.

With the Moama Championships in mind, our greens will still be prepared on Tuesdays and Fridays for that all important practice, please make good use of them.

Kerang

BLESSED with fine weather and excellent greens, the action continues at Kerang Bowling Club with an influx of visitors from as far afield as Korumburra, Ivanhoe, Buninyong, Lockington, Karingal, Inverloch, Bendigo, Lake Boga, sister clubs of Northern District and many places in between over the Easter holidays.

Congratulations to Graeme Hayes and Marlene Orr from Kerang Golf, who won the Medley Pairs, with Pat Quinn’s team from Cohuna Golf finishing as runners up on Friday.

Saturday saw some very close games in the three-bowl triples with the much-travelled Inverloch team of Wayne and Janis Parkes and Martin Hannaford taking first place, being the only three-game winners. The Korumburra team of Jim and Heather Garnham with Phil Ashton managed two wins and a tie to finish a very close second, capping off a double for the South Gippsland contingent.

Our own Jason Brown and Kym Ray of Lockington were the lucky recipients of the Easter egg baskets, just in time to spread some love on Sunday.

Joan Teasdale was the lucky winner of estimating how many eggs were in the special jar. Thanks to Lorraine Adams who once again excelled in preparing the attractive prizes, selling the tickets and to all who donated eggs.

Sunday’s event was a rapid-fire five games of six ends two-bowl triples. Entering the 5th round, there were multiple live entries and Damien Murray’s team was drawn to play Wayne Parkes’ team, which also had four wins.

A fine display of bowling from all concerned with Jason Brown, Damien Murray and Brody Harker winning the game to take first prize.

Graeme Morris, Bill O’Connor and Rod Pascoe took out the runners up prize on winning ends scored throughout the day over the other four-game winners.

Monday’s event was the premier gold letter event The Greenwood Fours with a field of 96. It was a “Star Day” for all Northern District Clubs to attend so full results will be available next week.

Last Tuesday’s Black Duck jackpot triples attracted 30 bowlers on to the greens. Judy McKerrow, Terry Nolan and Judy Hipwell had a good day, winning their two games while Lindsay Hein, Greg Tate and George Fenton bounced back after losing their first game to take the minor prize.

Lindsay seems another to feature very regularly in the winners’ circle. Being 11 shots up for the day, he was just one off taking out the jackpot as well last week.

We all breathed a sigh of relief when plus 12 was drawn out and once again went unclaimed. Today sees it sitting very attractively at $729 and when I last checked on Sunday, the field for today was 42.

Entries will be taken until 11am. Ring through on 5452 1194 if you would like to be in it. Play will start at noon instead of the usual time of 12.30pm as we will be playing two games of 13 ends with afternoon tea after the first game.

Thanks to all who contributed in any way in ensuring our Easter tournament was successful both on and off the greens.

There is always a great air of camaraderie when we renew acquaintances or welcome new visitors each year.

Thanks to our excellent greenskeeper Shane Moffat who was the recipient of many favourable comments about our greens – one Melbourne bowler said they were the best grass greens she had ever played on.

Thanks to our sponsors and all those members who contributed to another great Easter tournament.
