KERANG

Winners of the Kerang Bowling Club “Greenwood Fours” Perpetual Trophy were Martin Hanrahan, Ian Brimblecombe, Janis and Wayne Parks.

The 60th annual event attracted a strong field of 104 bowlers from far and wide during the five-day Easter Tournament at Kerang Bowling Club.

“Arnoldt and Greenwood” have operated the Ford dealership since 1913 and have held a highly respected and valued position in the Kerang District all of those years.

Sincere thanks to the Greenwood family for their continued support of Kerang Bowling Club.

Going into the last game, there were multiple two-game winners under pressure to win the vital last game.

However, Mother Nature intervened with a downpour that meant play could not continue and the Match Committee was left to calculate the overall position of each team.

After due diligence, it was the team of Martin Hanrahan, Ian Brimblecombe, Janis and Wayne Parks whose names will adorn the magnificent Greenwood Trophy once again.

The combined team of John Henty, Terry Nolan, Barry Theobald and Kevin Teasdale finished in second place.

Tuesday saw a good roll up of 48 players for the Black Duck Jackpot Triples.

With only two teams winning both games, it was the Inverloch team of Janis, Parksy and Marty with 23 shots up rounding out a very successful tournament by once again taking the prize.

After losing the first game and winning the second with nine shots up, Alice McLaughlin, Paula Pumpa and Bob McLaughlin of Mornington were thrilled to claim the prize money.

Hope springs eternal, so the rest of us eagerly anticipated the drawing of the jackpot number which was -5.

Groans all round as those with -6 rued winning an extra shot as the $729 was again unclaimed to grow to $777.

Names in by 11am for a 12.30pm start if you want to be in it.

Jenny Harrison, Marie Miller, Allan Davies and Don Monaghan had a very enjoyable day, bowling well and dining on a delicious lunch at Pyramid Hill’s Star Day on Wednesday.

Thanks to tour guide Allan who provided an interesting journey through the Macorna-Tragowel area on the way home.

Members are reminded of the Annual General Meeting of the Ladies’ and Men’s Sections and are encouraged to nominate for positions listed on the notice boards.

COHUNA

After the hugely successful Autumn Tournament, it has been a quieter time around the club over the Easter break.

Social bowls will continue to run on Tuesdays while the weather is ok but will revert to an afternoon starting time in the next few weeks.

Last Tuesday saw a small group enjoying their bowls on a coolish day after the rain.

Winners of the Triples event were Kate Peace, Rod Bannister and Trevor Kirby.

Friday’s Pie and Soup Day was very well attended with 22 teams participating.

Winners were the team of Peter Coates, Des Keely and Tony Williams. Second-placed team comprised Bruce Morrison, Frank Tresize and Mick Carmody.

Third-placed team included Pat Quinn, along with Mark and Neil. Well done and congratulations to all winners.

The AGM is on Wednesday April 10, and it’s hoped that as many members as possible will attend.

The following Saturday night is Presentation Night where the season’s winners will be presented with their awards and medallions.

There will be a two-course meal supplied by The Big Cohuna Co and a great night of celebration will follow.

The successful mid-week District Pennant teams have been keeping their skills up with regular practice, as the Midweek State finals are coming up on May 6 and 7 in Moama.

COHUNA GOLF

Local tournaments seem to be the main avenue for our keenest bowlers now that pennant and club competitions have wound up.

We had teams at Kerang over Easter, including a couple for their star day, no places on centre stage but most enjoyable.

With a quick back-up on Wednesday, it was on to Pyramid Hill, another excellent outing.

Gunbower had their annual top-notch star day on Sunday with a full field.

Golf did well at the Cohuna Pie and Soup Day, with Des Keely skipping the winning Gunbower team, with teams entered by Mick Carmody and Pat Quinn filling the placings.

This Thursday we head to Leitchville, and hope for similar results.

On Tuesday night, the Annual Meeting was scheduled, with John Keely pencilled in as the incoming President. Congratulations to him, and all other office-bearers, who will feature in a more detailed coverage next week.

Places to play are a little more restricted this week, with the weeklong Barham tournament booked out, although social bowls are still happening at both Cohuna and Kerang, and our greens are open from Tuesday on for practice.

With the change of seasons, we have quite a few members on the sick list, trust you all are on the mend and soon able to get back into action, our thoughts are with each and every one of you.
