Across the Greens

Kerang

ON Tuesday, players rolled up for the Black Duck jackpot triples event and it was good to have Yvonne back in the organisational chair again after a couple of weeks on the sick list.

The in-form players for the day, winning both games with +14 overall, was the team of Alyne Fagg, Peter Waters and Marilyn Theobald.

After losing the first game, Trevor Burmeister, Ray Maddox and Merv Tilley set about making amends to finish 10 shots up in the second game and claim the prizemoney.

Thanks again to Judy for the soup, which was enjoyed by all.

For those of us who may have bowled a little inconsistently throughout the day, the chance of our final score being drawn out for the jackpot gave us heart. Fingers crossed to no avail as -18 was drawn out and no team had had such a bad day as to qualify for the $777, therefore, the jackpot is $813.

Names need to be in by 11am for a 12.30pm start to have a chance of pocketing a slice of the cash.

The men’s fours were finalised on Sunday afternoon with some very exciting finishes.

Lindsay Hein’s team of Alyne Fagg, John Pay and Rod Pascoe needed an extra end to defeat Marshall Rosewall’s team of Fraser Macquire, Martin Infantino and Graeme Morris in the semi-final. The going got no easier in the final where they came up against Jason Brown’s team of Dale Hancock, Mark Hamon and Tige Neville.

In a match showcasing some excellent draw bowling, Dale turned up the pace with some good driving to kill the eighth end twice after losing six shots on the seventh end, which had left them two shots down. They were able to claw back one shot on the ninth end to start the last end one down.

The pressure brought out the best in all players and with one bowl to play, the match was tied.

After much deliberation and contemplating the best shot to play, Dale drew a shot which teetered a moment before falling ever so gently towards the kitty, which gave them two shots and the championship by one shot, with all eight players applauded for their fine bowling.

All members are invited to our presentation day on Sunday, April 28, at 1pm for bowls, afternoon tea and presentation of trophies.

Our men’s section annual general meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 1, at 7 pm, and our ladies’ section on the Wednesday, May 8, at 1pm.

Kerang Golf

THE Kerang Golf Bowls notes are back and just in time as the presentation day and annual general meeting were held last Sunday, with the highlight being the presentation of life memberships to Dale Spinks and Frank Ritchie, for their many years of service, both as players or in administrative roles.

Dale joined the club as a golf member in the late 1960s and when the bowls idea was brought forward, he also became a bowler, holding many positions in the administrative area over his 50-plus years as a bowler.

Frank, on the other hand, joined as a golf member, this time in the 1980s, and continues to play regular golf, but his love for bowls, after commencing in the midweek barefoot-type bowls, led him to becoming one of the best bowlers in our club, as well as in the association circles. He has also filled every position possible on the committee, from president through to now a position as tournament secretary.

Congratulations to both gentlemen on their contribution to Kerang Golf Bowls over many years.

The day started with a game of social bowls and 36 players participated, before we had afternoon tea and commenced the official procedures.

The bowls winners were Dallas Mathers, Greg Tate and Lorraine Douglass, who won both their games and finished 20 shots up. Runners-up were Carol Pay, Gary Borg and Trevor Linton, who won both games as well but only eight shots up.

Consolation third prize to Graeme Hayes, Dale Spinks and Ken Pay. The encouragement chocolates to Alan Hird, “Fonzy” Taylor and Jim McLeish.

The presentation day was highlighted by the celebration of the Division 2 Midweek team winning back-to-back pennants with their all-female team, and guess what – they sang the victory song again.

This victory is a credit to the team and the club for continuing the tradition of midweek bowls. All players were presented with a framed photo of the team after their win against Barham. Trophies and prizes were presented to all winners of the respective club events, with Marlene Orr adding her name to the Clair Spinks Memorial Trophy for the ladies club championship and Howard McClelland having his name etched on the Cliff Blythman Memorial Trophy for his win in the men’s club championship.

The 100-up winners were Marlene Orr and Frank Ritchie, with the pairs being Judy McKerrow and Marlene Rawson for the ladies, and Andrew and Ian Charles for the men.

The Men’s B Grade was won by Mick Pors and the fours by Loyd Murray, Graeme Hayes Andrew and Ian Charles. The mixed pairs was won by Ron and Judy McKerrow.

Announcements of the winners of the twilight triples and Ian “Squizzy” Taylor Memorial barefoot bowls were also made.

Congratulations to all the winners and all the players who participated to make the club events very successful. Eight pins were presented to Howard McClelland, Andrew Charles, Marlene Orr and Alan Hird for the core on end 10 against Gunbower in October last year.

Following the presentations, the annual general meeting was held with golf club president Peter Jones taking the chair for the election of office bearers. He congratulated the bowls club on their successful season and updated all in attendance of the future at Kerang Golf.

With only one nomination, Jimmy McLeish has been re-elected, unopposed, to lead the club for his second term.

In his report to the meeting, of the previous year’s activities, he thanked all the members who had contributed to the success of the club and especially congratulated the Midweek team on their premiership success, but also all the other pennant teams for their contributions to making the club strong, on and off the green. He especially thanked wife, Sonia for all her help and son Bryce for his continued enthusiasm for the bowls club.

A celebration cake to mark Jimmy and Sonia’s 50th wedding anniversary was also enjoyed by all.

Graeme Hayes was elected vice-president, with the excellent secretarial duties being taken on again by Judy McKerrow. Also, Peter Niall will continue as treasurer. Howard McClelland will act as club captain and the committee members are Laurie Gray, Mick Pors, Noel Robertson, Robert Taylor, Frank Ritchie, Rob Fisher, Allison Medson and Alan Hird, who will take over the greens director job.

Over the past few weeks, a few games of Thursday social bowls have been completed, when the weather permitted.

In March, Laurie Gray, George Fenton and Ken Pay had a win, and on April 4, a game of scroungers was played with Mari Miller being the winner. On April 11 there were 18 players, and Barry Theobald, Ron McKerrow and John Murphy were the winners.

Social bowls will continue each Thursday and Sunday (now the football season has commenced), with registration at 12.45pm for a 1pm start. All bowlers are welcome to attend – if you want more info, please call Aldo or any committee member.

Coming events: the Annual Anzac Day Triples is to be played on Thursday next week. There are still some vacancies, so get your entries in to Aldo (0407 310 762) or Frank Ritchie (0409 439 029) ASAP to get your spot. The day starts with soup and a pie, prior to the games of bowls. All proceeds to local Legacy, courtesy of our RSL.

Cohuna Golf

A CHILLY week turned into a great weekend, and one that our members who played in the Edinburgh Shield at Corowa thoroughly enjoyed. To finish second in the competition, with illness claiming a few intended players, was a great effort, with the social side of the two days a clear winner.

As well as Golf members, players came from Gunbower and Cohuna.

Earlier we staged our annual meeting with a substantial number of interested members in attendance.

Outgoing president Tucker Peace recapped highlights of the year which included two premierships, a regional title, first-class tournaments and social bowls, a most successful night series, along with continuing improvements to our greens and surrounds. He thanked all who had contributed to a wonderful year, and noted that the club would be in the capable hands of the incoming president John Keely.

Nominations to the board saw new faces in Pat Quinn, Merrillee Moss and Malcolm Appleby elected, joining current members M. Carmody, Y.Eckhardt, M.Henty, M.Rodwell and S. Brown. Retiring members J. Prout, J.Sutherland and I.Trezise were thanked for their service to the club.

Proposals for continued progress included pricing a kangaroo-proof fence, replacing the worn ditch rubbers with synthetic grass, and the provision of a tournament shirt which is now available.

John, in closing the meeting, thanked Tucker for his excellent contribution as president, and also Irene Trezise who had been on the board through all its formative years, serving as president herself for three terms, while still handling a catering role.

Also during the week it was Leitchville’s turn to host the pie-and-soup game, with sides from Cohuna claiming the first two prizes. Peter, Rhonda and Gwen managed third, although a missing scorecard may have altered that result.

This Thursday Gunbower are joining the hosting ranks, with everyone looking forward to an afternoon on their slick greens.

A couple of members enjoyed Barham’s hospitality on Saturday, with Peter bringing their winner’s cash back over the bridge. Interesting to hear that the Riverdome complex is to be shut down for the huge extensions following their Autumn carnival. All play from then on will be at the old Cobwell Street greens.

Our club is taking their turn with the pie-and-soup series on Friday, April 26. Note the change as there is already bowls scheduled at Kerang Golf on Anzac Day. Jean Sutherland would love to see the greens full for our final event of the year.
