Across the greens

Kerang

Tuesday was once again an enjoyable day on the greens.

Lindsay Hein is fast becoming the “King of Black Duck” with another win, ably supported by Bryce McLeish and Helen Pendlebury, taking out the prize with two good wins.

The jackpot continues to build unclaimed and sits at $853.

The Ladies’ Fours event was finalised last Thursday when Helen McBain and Barb Williams played Gayle Teasdale and Chelsea Fisher.

It was a closely contested match with the scores level after 12 ends.

Over the next six ends both teams won three ends each but the result at the end of play saw Helen and Barb prevail to take out the title for a record seventh time.

Previously they had shared the record with two of our former top class bowlers Elaine Light and Lillian Ladgrove. Congratulations Helen and Barb.

With all club events finalised we wind up the 2023-24 season on Sunday, April 28, with Presentation Day at 1pm for bowls, afternoon tea and presentation of trophies.

There is a list for names on the noticeboard in the club rooms.

Alyne Fagg and Kevin Teasdale journeyed to Mornington over the weekend on a reciprocal visit to the loyal Mornington Bowling Club members who regularly attend our Easter Carnivals.

They were warmly welcomed to the club.

Mornington BC overlooks Port Phillip Bay and a floor to ceiling window allows viewing sunsets over the water and dolphins at play.

Sounds rather idyllic to us from the inland.

Well done to Alyne, who teamed with Debbie Wood to win the pairs event on Saturday.

Alyne and Kevin played with Trish Clegg and David Pumpa in the “Jack Glasson Memorial Fours” on Sunday with a 50 per cent success rate but thoroughly enjoyed meeting a whole lot of bowlers from outside our usual playing area.

All lady members are invited to a meeting at 10am this Tuesday morning to bring us up to date with what needs to be organised for when we host our share of the Bowls Vic Over 60’s State Carnival in the Northern District from May 20 to 26.

Please make an effort to attend.

Sub-committee chairs are reminded to prepare reports for the Men’s Section Annual General Meeting on May 1 at 7pm, and Ladies on the May 8 at 1pm. Nominations are still being taken.

Good bowling to all as we continue to support neighbouring clubs at their tournaments.

Kerang Golf

A great turn out for Social last Thursday with 27 players participating.

Winning both games and finishing 17 shots up were Ronnie McKerrow and David Randall who took out the top prize.

Laurie Gray and Mick Pors on 16 shots up, were not far behind collecting the runners-up prize.

Also with two wins, Trevor Linton and Ken Pay had to settle for third place.

Chocolates to Marlene Orr and Lorraine Douglass.

Our annual Anzac Day Triples Tournament is full, with a waiting list. Thank you to all 24 teams who have entered.

There will be soup and a pie at midday, with bowls to start at 12:30 pm.

Raffle prizes have been donated and include meat packs, legs of lamb, bottles of top-quality red wine and also plenty of other donated goods.

A good fundraising effort for our RSL Club and Legacy.

Sunday Bowls was played in glorious weather, and 16 players enjoyed two games of 2-4-2 Pairs.

After the regulatory two games, Lorraine Ritchie and Carol Pay came out winners with 11 shots up and collected the major prize.

The runners-up were only one shot adrift, with 10 shots up, to go with their two wins. Encouragement award of chocolates went to Jeff Anderson and David King.

Social Bowls will continue each Thursday and Sunday, with everyone welcome.

Assembly time is 12:45pm for a 1:00pm start, finishing before it gets too cold.

Forgot to mention in last week’s notes – at the presentations, along with all the trophies won by members over the season, Jeff Anderson was presented with his “veteran’s” badge (in other words, he has had his 80th birthday)

An eight badge was presented to Howard McClelland, Andrew Charles, Marlene Orr and Alan Hird for their score of eight in a pennant game earlier in the season.

Congratulations to those members.

There is still plenty of bowls being played through this autumn/winter period with tournaments and regular social bowls at our neighbouring clubs.

Locally, Kerang have their regular Black Duck Triples on Tuesdays and we have our social bowls on Thursdays and Sundays, so keep your eye in and join in the competitions.

Cohuna

With the glorious autumn weather still hanging on, bowlers are keen to enjoy their social bowls and the many tournaments.

At the Bendigo East greens a couple of weeks ago, our local triple’s team played in the State Triple’s Final.

Alison Ainger, Maree Scott and Roma Opie had already won their district final and were competing against other district triple’s winners.

The girls won their first two games and only went down by one shot in the third; the team beating them going on to compete in, and ultimately win, the State Title.

So close and yet so far! Congratulations on a great performance girls.

Twenty eight bowlers turned up for last week’s social bowls, the greens were extremely fast and in excellent condition. Thanks again to Brian and the team.

The new match committee ladies did well with their team selection as three teams won both their games. The winners with 53 points were Noddy Hosking, Marg Reade and Corale Jones.

The runners-up were unable to be separated even after a count back, so equal second with 50 points were the teams skippered by Kate Peace and Rhonda Ballard.

Quite a few were feeling the heat and the effort of playing two games of 10 ends; it has been decided to stick with the 10 ends for the time being.

Thursday’s Pie and Soup Day was at Gunbower, and the usual excellent standard of hospitality prevailed.

Winners on the day were Mel Hogan, John Pearson and Ian Howard, congratulations on your good form boys.

Cohuna Golf

A much quieter week in the world of bowls, although members keen to practice have been enjoying our free-running greens, so typical of autumn conditions.

Gunbower was the centre of attention on Thursday with their inaugural staging of a pie and soup event.

They handled the day beautifully, with the local side skipped by Bart Pearson, along with Ian Howard and Mal Hogan notching first place.

Placegetters were teams headed by Peter Bibby and Lawrie Crawford.

Back to Cohuna Golf this week, with a reminder that it’s on Friday, in deference to Anzac Day.

Peter, Frank Trezise and Jon Henty made Lake Boga’s Catalina Classic their venue of choice over the weekend, and scored the best last game cash which helped balance the books.

A team from Highland Society in Maryborough won all seven games to clearly win an excellent tournament.

An update on the new building program at Barham, with the good news that the current Riverdome complex will remain open through the renovation period, except for two separate one week blocks which will be well publicised.

This will prove a great bonus for all winter bowlers. Ring Jean Fairchild for any enquiries about availability and events.

We bade farewell to the first of our Northern travellers this week, with more packing in preparation.

We have to slot in the Moama state titles on the first weekend in May, and then it will be a mass exodus no doubt.
