KERANG

On Sunday we enjoyed bowling in the sunshine, followed by afternoon tea and presentation of trophies to winners and runners-up in club events held throughout the year.

Congratulations to all, and well done to all who played in the events.

Saturday social bowls is always popular and the winners last week, with a fine display of draw bowling, were Rob Curtis and Peter Basile.

The annual meeting of the men’s section of the club will be held Wednesday night at 7pm and we are looking for a good turn-out. The ladies’ section will hold their annual general meeting the following Wednesday, May 8, at 1pm.

We welcomed visitors from Boort, Lake Boga, Cohuna and Kerang Golf to our Black Duck Triples event on Tuesday. The balmy 25 degrees suited our two game winners Carol Pay, Selena Roberts as well as George Fenton, who finished 21 shots up.

Bryce McLeish featured in the money once again, playing with Kerry Watts and Murray Sutherland, and winning by four shots in the second game to claim the prize.

It would have been worth having a bad day and scoring -20 to claim the jackpot, but once again it continues increasing and today is worth $885. Names on the noticeboard or ring the club on 5452 1194 if you would like to play.

There are plenty of tournaments around the district to support. If you fancy seafood, then head on down to Pyramid Hill for their seafood day on Sunday.

KERANG GOLF

A great day last Thursday for our annual Anzac Day Bowls event, with a full contingent of 24 teams.

As a fundraiser for our local RSL and Legacy, more than $2000 was raised in conjunction with the golf day, with all the raffle prizes donated.

On the bowls front, the Cohuna Golf/Cohuna team of Ian Coates, Mike Hoffman and Wayne Brooks finished with wins in all three games and 77 points to run out winners.

Not far behind was the team of Ian Main, Graham Rowland and ‘Roddo’ Chalmers from Wakool, who won all of their games as well, but were one point behind with 76 points.

Finishing third on a countback after also finishing in 76 points was Barry Theobald, Trevor Pocock and Bob McBain, with an honourable mention to Laurie Gray’s team, who also won all their games.

The best last game score was won by Cohuna Golf’s Pat Quinn, Jason Heard and Gavin Free with 26 points, on a countback from two other combinations.

Chocolates to Judy McKerrow’s team and Jo Adam’s team who both had the same score.

Many thanks to all who came to support the local RSL, with teams from our neighbouring clubs as well as two from Boort. It is great that so many clubs support our tournaments.

This weekend will see Pyramid Hill hold a seafood tournament day on Sunday. They are still taking entries.

As mentioned earlier, our raffle prizes were donated, with many thanks to Dave Gray and Choice Cut Butchers, Rob Fisher and the Royal Hotel, Aaron Lancaster, Graeme Hayes Real Estate and Dale Spinks for their donations. Also, special thanks to Gray’s Bakery for their continued support, supplying the pies for lunch before both the bowls and golf. Thanks also to the Royal Hotel, who supplied the cheese and biscuit snacks at the completion of the games. The help of these community people and businesses help to make our fundraising day even more successful.

Sunday bowls was played in glorious autumn weather, with 14 players. After the normal two games, the Howard McClelland and Craig Hicks combination come out in front with a total of 13 shots up, just one shot in front of Judy McKerrow and Bryce McLeish who were runner’s up.

Chocolates to ‘Fonzy’ Taylor, Ronnie McKerrow and John Murphy. Members and visitors are reminded that social bowls is on every Thursday and Sunday at Kerang Golf, with registration at 12.45pm for a 1pm start.

COHUNA

There were quite a few local bowls events during the past week, and why not with the glorious autumn weather enticing many outdoors. Social bowls last Tuesday saw 33 bowlers turn up and some keen competition followed.

Accruing 51 points and being the day’s winners were the team of Barb Hildebrand, Marilyn Flinders and Anne, an Adelaide visitor to our club.

Runners up on 50 points was Noddy’s all-boys team, with Keith Foreman and Trevor Dehne making up the trio. There was some good bowling and really close games, with visitors from Adelaide, Cohuna Golf and Leitchville enjoying the day too.

The Kerang Golf Legacy day was held during the week. The winners were Mike Hoffman, Wayne Brooks and Ian Coates. Congratulations on your good bowling.

Cohuna bowlers scooped the winning pool at last week’s Pie and Soup day held at Cohuna Golf, with the winners Rick Parr, Barb Hildebrand and Gaye Simms, with the runners up team including Trevor Dehne, Rob Wilson and Marian Smith. Pie and Soup Day on Thursday, May 2, is at Cohuna. Please note the change of day from Friday to Thursday for this week.

The State Pennant Finals are being held over next weekend at Moama, with the mid-week finals held on Monday, May 6, and Tuesday May 7.

Good luck to our teams who are competing for the State title. They have bowled consistently well to reach the final and we wish them the best of luck in their quest to go one step further.

COHUNA GOLF

With the continuation of this wonderful weather, bowlers have been out and about enjoying great greens and tip-top conditions. Well done to Ian Coates’ team of Mike Hofman and Wayne Brooks, who won the Anzac Day triples at Kerang Golf.

We had 20 enthusiastic teams for our Pie and Soup day on Friday, sponsored by our friends at Dunkinway Tyre Service. The greens were terrific, the lunch extra tasty and the competition was keen. What more could we ask for! The winners, with an outstanding score or 85 points, was Rick Parr, Barb Hildebrand and Gaye Simms.

They must have gained a few bonus points for an end of four or more. The runners up were more Cohuna faces in Trevor Dehne, Rob Wilson and Marion Smith, while perennial place-getters Peter and Rhonda Bibby, along with Gwen Campbell, were third.

During lunch, one of the first tasks of newly installed president John Keely was to welcome long-serving member Doug Peace into the ranks of Super-Veterans.

Doug began bowls in the night pennant after a distinguished cricket career, then embraced pennant as his work load decreased. He has been part of several premierships, has won a club pair’s event as well as a minor singles title.

Coming up is our big Moama weekend, with two days of pennant format games in a quest for Victoria’s pennant championship. Our wounded warriors are coming good thankfully, which augurs well for our team.

Included in our opposition are Bairnsdale, Stawell, Victoria (Ballarat) and home side Moama, who are all chock full of state and overseas bowlers.

It will be a revelation to line up against Scottish world champion Alex Marshall, who plays for Moama.

Good luck to all and also to the Cohuna mid-week team, who start their games on Monday after we finish. It’s a wonderful effort for both regional sides to come from Cohuna.
