Cohuna

LAST Monday and Tuesday the state finals of Midweek Pennant were played in Moama.

Thanks to Marg Reade and Barb Hildebrand for their following accounts of the two fabulous days of very close competition.

Cohuna team did extremely well finishing second in their section and fourth in the state overall.

The eventual winners were Ocean Grove and Cohuna gave them a run for their money, only losing by three shots. We had them worried.

A big thank you to all bowling club members who came along to give their support. Manager Barb Hildebrand and lolly lass Kaye Holmes did their best to keep everyone organised and energised. Well done to all.

The Cohuna team members were Jeff Reade, Marg Reade, Alison Ainger, Ann Hipwell, Rhonda Ballard, Val Dehne, Ian Howard, Mary Meredith, Frank Tonn, Trevor Dehne, Brian Bowles, Mike Hoffman, Noel Hosking, Wayne Brooks and Barb Hildebrand.

Numbers for social bowls last Wednesday were somewhat down, with only Alison Ainger of the Moama contingent turning up for another game. Alison’s great form held though, as she was in the winning team with Greg Beck, Ursula Kirby and at long last, Rob Wilson.

It’s been quite a while between drinks for Rob and the smile had to be seen to be believed.

Well done, and hope you have many more winning days, Rob.

Cohuna form continued through to Pie and Soup day at Leitchville on Thursday, with two teams doing well.

Winners were Bluey Fletcher, Rhonda Ballard and Ian Howard. Also in the prize getters was the team of Steve Clark, Gaye Simms and Rod Bannister. Congratulations and well done to all.

In late April, four of our bowlers travelled to Corowa for a two-day ladies tournament. Sue Burgess, Corale Jones, Alison Ainger and Gaye Simms had a great time and bowled very well too.

Thanks to Gaye for filling in for Terri Hancock at late notice; sorry you missed out on a fun couple of days, Terri.

The girls won four games out of six, and only lost overall by six shots. An awesome effort.

The eventual winners were from Ballarat/Castlemaine. Cohuna had beaten them by three shots in an early game so their form was good, and they finished in fourth position out of 24 teams. Congratulations on a great result.

After the much-needed rain on Friday night, the weather cleared to bright and warm for Saturday social bowls. Numbers were down but those who bowled had a good time.

The only two-game winners for the day were Noddy Hosking, Trevor Kirby and Jules Mastin. Great to see those who are regular players turning up in the winners’ circle quite often.

Practice makes perfect as they say so well done and keep bowling.

Cohuna Golf

WITH major bowls events now wound up, and the weather likely to influence social bowls from now on, we might make this Tuesday’s jottings the last for the year.

Another round of the Pie and Soup series was played at Leitchville during the week, with the side of Bluey Fletcher, Rhonda Ballard and Ian Howard taking the honours.

Runner-up was Frank Trezise and team in a good day for Golf bowlers.

Gunbower this week should just about wind up a very enjoyable series. Mal Hogan is taking names.

Barham hosted the Northern District’s section of the BPL cup, and although it attracted only four entries, the competition was extra keen. Conducted under the sets-play format, the Golf side of Jason Heard, Rodney Fletcher and Col Black qualified despite losing their first round game.

All other sides also lost either one or two matches, so we’ll see now where the next round will be played. Pine Rivers (Queensland) is the eventual venue for sides which win through the next four elimination games.

Well done to the Midweek side of Cohuna’s, which performed very well at Moama last weekend, and but for one unlucky loss would have gone close to winning their section. Ocean Grove were the eventual winners.

Thanks to the Gannawarra Times for handling our notes each week, despite all the available technology the bowling public still enjoy a hard copy of their club’s activities.

Holiday-makers, please keep safe and enjoy the break, it’s only a couple of months until our bowls calendar comes to life in August.

Kerang

CONGRATULATIONS to Denise Frantz on being re-elected president of the ladies’ section at the AGM last Wednesday.

Denise thanked all past members for their commitment and welcomed vice-president June Maddox, secretary Gayle Teasdale and committee members Marilyn Theobald, Helen McBain, Jenny Harrison, Carmel Adams, Lorraine Adams, Helen Pendlebury and Barb Williams.

We welcomed visitors from Korumburra, Boort, Wedderburn, Cohuna and Kerang Golf to Black Duck jackpot triples last week when 48 players enjoyed their games in the sun.

Sonia McLeish and Helen McBain replaced their husbands from the previous week’s winners’ circle supported by Marilyn Theobald to win both games with a total of 11 shots up to take first prize.

I can personally attest to the skilful bowling of Kim Watts, Greg Tate and Heather Garnham, who finished 17 shots up on us to take the second game prize.

Again, the jackpot went unclaimed when -6 was drawn, bringing this week’s total to $975. If that sounds appealing, make sure you have your names in by 11am this Tuesday on 5452 1194 and be ready to play at 12.30pm. It could be your lucky day.

With an influx of visitors for the Bowls Victoria Over 60s Championships taking place from May 20-26 in the Northern District, we will be calling for all hands on deck to get the events up and running efficiently Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at Kerang.

Good luck and good bowling to our members who have entered in some events.

Thanks to Chelsea Fisher, Mark Hamon, Barb Williams and Helen McBain who made sure the pupils from St Mary’s Primary School in Swan Hill had an enjoyable time on the greens last Thursday as part of their excursion day to Kerang.

Congratulations to Don and Jacqueline Jenkins and Barry and Marilyn Theobald who celebrated wedding anniversaries and to Helen McBain whose birthday was last week.

See you on the greens.

Kerang Golf

THE good autumn weather continues and so does bowls at Kerang Golf.

Last Thursday, 22 players had a game in our regular competition and with two big wins, Marlene Orr, Mick Pors and John Murphy collected the top prize, with 25 shots up.

In second place, the pairing of Ken Pay and Allison Medson recorded +11 shots, which would normally be enough to win. The chocolates to Jimmy and Sonia McLeish, helped by Marlene Rawson.

Mother’s Day on Sunday, so no organised bowls as everyone celebrated those special people in our lives.

The Over 60s Carnival commences next Monday and Kerang Golf have been allocated preliminary matches on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Please pitch in and help if you are asked, as this is a great opportunity to showcase our facilities and hospitality, to players from all over Victoria, some of whom would never have been to our area.

Play commences at 9am each day.
