SOCIAL bowls on Tuesday attracted 39 players and lots of visitors, which was great.
We welcomed Ken from Ballarat, Sharon and Steve from South Australia and Peter and Chris from Wonthaggi.
Peter skippered the winning team, which included locals Savi Barnes, Pat Quinn and Gayle Anderson.
They were the only two-game winners with 49 points.
Kerang
I WOULD like to thank the voting populace within the walls of Kerang Bowling Club who saw fit, via printed a medium through a stringent democratic event, that I represent the club.
I will do my utmost (not like in working bees) to project the inner workings of our club to you, the general public.
I would like to thank the previous committee members who decided to take a well-earned break, and also those putting their hands up again.
The club thanks you.
Now to the showstopper, the bowls equivalent of the Melbourne Cup that stops the nation but on a weekly basis: the Kerang Bowling Club black duck social triples.
We are attempting to negotiate heady waters in unchartered territory with the increasing jackpot and swiftly snowballing interest within the Kerang lawn bowls community.
This week’s winners were Mark Hamon, Rosie Laughlin and Babs Williams with an overall tally of +28 after a hefty favourable result in the second game.
This was to the chagrin of popular member Jason Wilson, who felt a little duped at the prospect of not having his name in the paper – so here you are, Jase.
The second-game winners were Jim McLeish, Marylin Theobald and up-and-coming talent Mervyn Tilley.
This union of talented adults prevailed to the tune of 16 shots against their ill-fated opposition.
The number drawn after the drumroll was -28 and – guess what? – the jackpot swelled again to $1023.
I’m not sure if it has reached four figures previously but it certainly has presently and will have people looking forward to their Tuesday on the green, just like the 48 who enjoyed the lovely autumn sunshine on Tuesday.
To register for black duck, have your name on the list on the board at the clubrooms or make a hasty phonecall on 5452 1194 the morning of said social event to make your availability known.
To reflect the importance of black duck at the moment, we had visitors from Inglewood, Boort, Lake Boga, Korrumburra and Kerang Golf plying their wares.
We thank these clubs for their continuing support for our events.
Next on the agenda is the over 60s’ carnival for which we are a host club.
We will make our greens available to bowlers from all over the state and I’m absolutely positive our visitors will be met with a strong eye-to-eye handshake/kiss on the cheek (such is the hospitality of our club) once they arrive.
We have a solid itinerary with six days of bowls of a high standard forthcoming.
There will most likely be state representatives and we may be lucky enough to have a sprinkling of ex-national reps in our ranks.
We wish all bowlers the best of luck on the best greens in Victoria, and probably the world.
With a bar facility also available, it will be a hard time for our visitors to go home.
We hope all enjoys their time at Kerang Bowling Club and also bring some flyers for their home clubs’ tournaments for the colder months so we can return the favour.
With a new committee and other sub-committees voted in and received in good faith, we hope the season is a good one for us.
But that won’t be possible if you put your hand up only for pennant.
We need all ands on deck – and the over 60s is just the first step.
According to the board we have 66 members so it should be easier to have tasks around the club to be completed.
We win with everybody in.
Kerang Golf
AS the sun keeps shining, our social bowls continues to attract good numbers.
Last Thursday there were 20 players who had a game of 2-4-2 pairs and at the end of the two games only one combination had won both.
This team of Laurie Gray and Jimmy McLeish took out the major prize, with the runners-up having a win and a draw, finishing six shots up to claim second just in front of Rob Curtis and John Murphy, who were third. Chocolates to Craig Hicks and David Randell.
Sunday bowls was attended by 22 players and the sunshine was very pleasant again.
A mixture of pairs and triples played the regulatory two games.
With a winning margin of 15 shots to go with their two wins, Stuart Baskott and Sonia McLeish won the major prize.
With a 12-shot winning margin, Andrew Charles and Craig Hicks were runners-up and Howard McClelland teamed with caravanners Carol and Wayne to finish in third place.
Chocolates to Jimmy McLeish and Mari Miller.
A presentation of new pennant shirts was made to new members Dallas Mathers and Stuart Baskott who have joined Kerang Golf for the upcoming pennant season.
Members have welcomed both players to the club and Stuart was very pleased with his win.
The over 60s’ carnival commenced yesterday, with most clubs in our area being involved with the sectional play days.
At Kerang Golf we are pleased to welcome bowlers from all parts of Victoria to our bowls facility, our town and the area in general.
Most of these visiting players will be on their first trip to our sunny northern district and clubs will be keen to make sure it is not the last time they visit.
After we received a generous grant from the Bus Stop Op Shop in April, new mats and kitties will be used for the first time in this carnival.
Kerang Golf Bowls Club thanks the Bus Stop organisation for its support to our bowls community and the town in general.
