Bowls notes

Cohuna

THERE is a lot to catch up with this week. Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean it’s quiet on the bowls scene, although numbers are down due to the annual migration to warmer places.

On the Tuesday following the long weekend, a very small number of diehards turned up on a day when rain threatened.

The winners were Marianne Maud and Corale Jones with 48 points.

The same long weekend many travelled to Deniliquin for the annual three-day tournament. From all reports, a great time was had and some really excellent bowling happened too.

There goes the theory that you need a good night’s sleep to bowl well. All commented on the perfect weather and the exceptional hospitality offered by the host club.

Keith Foreman was in good form as usual and cleaned up all comers at cards. Congratulations to the team of Frank Tonn, Gavan Hird and Kay Currie, who made it to the playoff. They won their first final but went down in the second in a great effort.

Congratulations also to Noddy Hosking, Keith Foreman and Gaye Simms, who won their section. There are some great pictures on the socials, and thanks to Rhonda and Kaye for those.

Friday night indoor bowls has been going for a couple of weeks with good numbers enjoying the competition. Winners on the first night were Noddy Hosking, Mary Clarke and Gavan Hird and well done to them.

We heard Mary’s looking to start a favourite T-shirt competition, great start Mary.

Last Friday night the boys were too good for everyone, the winners being Rod Bannister, Stuart Bascott and Richard Flinders, with not an interesting T-shirt among them. Lift your game, fellas.

It may be a quiet time at the club with Pennant competition in recess, however many jobs and improvements are being undertaken to hopefully be completed in time for spring.

Quotes are being finalised for a major upgrade and renewal of concreting around the greens. This will greatly enhance our entrance and make getting around a lot safer.

Talking about updates, members will soon be voting for the design of our new Pennant shirts and the short-listed artwork is available for perusal at the clubhouse.

Thanks to a great result from the cluBarham voucher raffle, a new bar fridge has been bought and installed. Noddy and the team have supervised the installation and no doubt tested to ensure that those coldies are cooled to their liking.

It was a great effort by all those members who sold so many tickets and thanks to cluBarham for its generosity.

We are always on the lookout for new sponsors and to this end board members will be approaching local and other businesses in an effort to increase sponsorship. Hopefully we will have a few new faces on board this year.

As it’s a relatively quiet time of year, Cohuna Bowls Club notes will resume in August.

Kerang

IT would seem the Kerang Bowling Club Black Duck Social Triples entered unchartered territory after nigh-on 10 months with the jackpot rising every week.

With that said, we still managed to pack another 30 players onto the green on what was a pleasant winter afternoon on Tuesday with the renewed jackpot balance of $60.

The winners of the afternoon were Kim Watts, Marylin Theobald and Jenny Harrison with +23 after their two matches. A good effort.

The second-game largest margin was achieved Fraser MacGuire, John Duckworth and Don Jenkins, who registered a nice win with 13 shots up.

After play had concluded, the normal proceeding occurred with inspired conversation and a mug of hot coffee or tea or maybe the odd cold refreshment.

The jackpot was again drawn and again claimed by Kerry Watts, Peter Waters and Brian Roche.

With the jackpot going off for the second time in two weeks, it will remain at $60 for this Tuesday’s play. Hopefully the same amount and more players frequent our greens this coming week.

Players who are willing and able to play Black Duck triples should come in and put their names down on the list provided or call the club on 5452 1194 on Tuesday morning before the 11am deadline.

There is a very pressing issue on the minds of NDPA and MVPA delegates at the moment and this will need to be put to a vote by our club members.

It is going to affect all divisions within our club, so it is imperative that all members come and listen to what is being proposed and vote on it according to their preferences.

There will be information disseminated on the night that is very important and could well change the landscape of bowls in the area.

An email will be sent out within the next few days relating to the proposal to arm our members with the latest and most accurate information available with the time and date of this meeting to be finalised.

This is a please to members to make themselves available for this very important meeting.
