Kerang Golf Bowls
A WARM weekend for bowls and in the Northern Valley competition, our Division 1 team travelled to Cohuna Golf to tackle the top team.
Although Kerang Golf was competitive on two rinks, the Cohuna Golf team showed their exceptional depth with a big win in the other game.
Frank Ritchie’s team was the shining light with a one shot win over Harrison Keely, Lloyd Murray’s team were down by three shots to “Bluey” Fletcher, and Dallas Mather’s rink succumbed to a dominant Jarrod Hammond team.
Division 2 were our only team playing at home and after a fast start, stalled somewhat before the break, but the “cuppa” must have revitalised them, as both Graeme Haye’s and Greg Beck’s teams went on to strong victories and the Laurie Gray rink lost on the last end. This team now sits in third position on the ladder
Division 3 travelled to Pyramid Hill and played in the morning to dodge what was supposed to be the heat later in the day. The early starting time didn’t seem to worry this team as all rinks won, and “stand-in” skipper Jeff Anderson led his team to a huge 28 shot win, and in doing so, received the Royal Hotel vouchers for this week. Well done Jeff, Marlene Rawson, Ronnie McKerrow and Tony Pearson. Noel Robertson’s rink won by 14 shots and David Randell’s by seven. The team is now in second spot on the ladder after the first round of matches have been completed.
The Midweek teams are performing very well, with the Division 1 team accounting for Cohuna Golf last Wednesday. With Graeme Hayes’ team leading the way with a 21 shot win and Jimmy McLeish’s team also having a big win, 29/11, for an overall 76/39 victory. Well done to this team – they are now in third place on the ladder.
Division 2 didn’t have to travel far, to Kerang, to play their game and came away winners on both rinks, with David Randell leading the way with a 15 shot advantage and Marlene Rawson also had a win by four shots. This sees the Division 2 team on top of the ladder, but it is an eleven team competition, so still plenty of different teams to play in the coming weeks.
Night 6 of Twilight Triples saw Hayes Real Estate the big winners with 32 points, but under the competition rules could not take the Choice Cut Butchers vouchers, as they had previously won them. So President Jimmy selected a lucky team card and Gray-Wilson will be enjoying the goods from the butcher’s shop.
Runners-up were Royal Hotel with 30 points. Rotary accepted the chocolates, but with some controversy – might have to wait till next week to see the result. The ladder sees Hayes Real Estate out in front with 152 points, followed by Eagles 44 with 139, Team Charles 129 and Gray Wilson rounds out the top four with 128.
Thursday Social was enjoyed by the 20 players who took part and two games of three bowl pairs, with a change of skipper, was completed with three combinations winning both their games. With a total of 15 shots up, Fraser Macguire and Trevor Linton were the winners, with Jimmy McLeish and Dale Spinks in the runner-up position. Third to Mick Fisher and Dave Randell. Chocolates to Greg Beck and Neil Paul.
Our major tournament is coming up this Sunday, with the CluBarham sponsored Star Day Fours. There is still space on the entry sheet for teams who have not yet entered, so get your team organised and let Aldo (0407 310762) or Frank Ritchie (0409 439029) know ASAP.
Not long after, our Christmas Party will be held on Sunday, December 15. Allison has been in charge of organising this event and all members are invited to attend. A sumptuous two course fully catered for meal with Santa Claus and a Kris Kringle will make for an entertaining evening. Please put you name on the list on the noticeboard, so the catering arrangements can be made.
Late news – Frank and Lorraine Ritchie played off for the State Mixed Pairs on Sunday, with the game being moved from Cohuna Golf to the Barham Dome, because of the rain and unfortunately were not able to hold locals Michel “Spike” and Jenny Laursen who won 16 shots to 7. Congratulations to Jenny and Spike.
Kerang Bowls Notes
IN the Northern Valley Competition Kerang hosted Racecourse and left C Green victors to the tune of 14 shots with teams Hancock and Lunghusen recording solid victories (10 and 11 shots) and Team Wilson looking forward to next week. The win cements second spot for the minute with a nice little cushion of points separating second and third.
Northern District action in Division 1 Kerang welcomed Cohuna and had a draw with Teams Hein and Brown winning their rinks (one and six shots) and Team Pay after a couple of good weeks lowered his colours to Brooks by seven shots. The draw has Kerang sitting precariously in fourth spot at the halfway point of the season.
In Division 2, Kerang also accommodated Cohuna and came out second best unfortunately. Team Marshall went down by four shots and Teams Frantz and McBain both suffering two shots losses. At the midway mark of the season Kerang are sitting sixth on the ladder with some work to do in front of them if they are seeking a finals spot.
In Divison 3, our Kerang reps travelled to the Riverdome over in Barham and came away with one rink victorious. That being Team Infantino by four shots with our other two rinks going down by three and 15 shots. All isn’t lost as such, as this team currently hold down fourth spot on the ladder.
In the raffles, “Giggles” Howard won the leg of ham. Kim Watts and “Tunna” Roberts collected the meat trays and Mike Holmann got the six pack.
In the Blackduck Social Triples we had 24 players take part on a warm day. A Fagg, R. McKerrow and B. Williams withstood the conditions best with a combined winning total of 20 shots. J. McKerrow, B. McBain and Y. Summers took out the second game margin with a 10 shot win. The jackpot wasn’t claimed with +13 proving lucky for nobody.
In Club news, we have our Ladies Gala day coming up on Friday 29 and encourage people to enter it. It is Any Combination fours with a delicious afternoon tea provided after the third game. Entries to Helen McBain and Gayle Teasdale.
Men’s Championships Singles entries will close on December 6 with the first round completed on the eighth. Please place your names on the noticeboard if interested in entering.
Members are encouraged to donate grocery items to the Hamper which will be raffled off at the Christmas Party on December after the last home and away fixture.
Cohuna Golf Bowls
THE Tuesday ladies played a mix of triples and fours to begin their bowls week, with Linda’s team of Helen Hall, Barb Barry and Corrie Murchie taking the day’s trophies.
With the early start operating now, fields should increase as we dodge the heat of the day.
Midweek pennant the next day saw Division Two have a bye, fortunately as Division One needed their help to field a team.
Not the best of days at Kerang Golf with Frank and Peter copping a shellacking, only Yvonne’s rink was good enough to snag a couple of match points.
A better performance can be expected this week with players returning.
Fields for the Wednesday night bowlers are going from strength to strength, with a full green playing this week.
Winners on the night were Ruff Farrant, Glenda Bowles and Steven Henty, narrowly from two other near contenders.
Numbers at Thursday pairs were down a tad, the hot weather a prime factor, although they too are now starting early.
Regular cash recipient Mick Carmody teamed with Cheryle Baker to claim first prize, with Snow Baker and Mary Rodwell taking the repechage cash.
Kimmy’s vouchers this week to Ian Morrison and Noelene Brown. Well done to you all.
Pennant results were split 50-50 this week, with our Premier team winning well against Kerang Golf, courtesy of a huge victory by Jarred Hammond.
Bluey, still unbeaten, up by a couple and Harrison down by one. Off to Racecourse this week breaking new ground.
The Ones had an early start against Leitchville, but handled it well, winning on all three rinks.
Gary Easton got right away from Tony Cantwell to win by 17, with both Pat Quinn and Peter Bibby up by eight each.
With a few surprise results in other games this group found themselves on top of the ladder, a terrific effort at the end of the first full round of matches.
Division Two had to sacrifice a few players due to absences further up, and consequently struggled all day over at Pyramid Hill.
Greg Mathers kept his good record intact, gaining two points, but both Ian Morrison and Des Keely would have been glad to see the final end completed.
Bower vouchers to Greg, Cheryle Baker, Noelene Brown and Allan Dunne.
Likewise the Gunny Golfers played short-handed, and got a fair old touch-up from a Cohuna side.
Thanks to those who made sure we didn’t have to forfeit by playing at late notice.
We had the first of the ham nights on Monday, a report next week, with a reminder that week two is at Leitchville, not Cohuna as listed in the book.
Plenty of names are in for the casserole night on Friday, still room for more, whilst the Christmas break-up function is also gathering pace.
Our tournament organisers are busy chasing entries for the Classic Fours on December 8, try to be part of this, our major tournament for the year.
