KERANG GOLF

THE pennant season has now finished, and congratulations are due to all the premier teams, both Saturday and midweek, who achieved the ultimate success over the season.

In the Northern Valley competition, Kerang defeated Cohuna Golf last Sunday at Cohuna in a great contest.

Northern District Playing Area Saturday Division 1 premiers are Cohuna, Division 2 were our own Kerang Golf, and Wakool won the Division 3 title.

In midweek, Barham saluted over a valiant Kerang, and Gunbower were too strong for Barham 2 in Division 2.

Well done to all clubs for a season where there were a few changes to our “normal” and some new premiers in all divisions.

On a home front, our second last night of the Ian “Squizzy” Taylor Memorial Barefoot Bowls was completed last Wednesday evening.

The Hayes Real Estate team is making a late rush to win the coveted shield, but Hirdy’s Buslines seem to have enough points at this stage.

Nonetheless, Hayes Real Estate were winners with 32 points. Captain Graeme along with his deputies Dave Wood, Travis Hipworth and Craig Davis will enjoy some products from Choice Cut Butchers this week.

The runners-up were Stace’s Mob with 28 points. Chocolates were decided on a three-way countback, with the Lions accepting the sweets.

The ladder sees Hirdy’s Buslines on top with 193 points, followed by Hayes Real Estate 172, Royal Hotel 166 and Ian’s Allstars on 147.

Presentation of trophies and the “Squizzy” Shield will take place straight after the completion of games this week.

Thursday Social was attended by 10 players and a mixture of pairs and triples played three games of six ends.

The winners were Howard McClelland and Graeme Rabbas (Geelong visitor) who had two wins and 17 shots up on a countback from Jimmy McLeish and John Murphy.

Chocolates to Laurie Gray Neil Paul and Bryce McLeish.

Social Bowls is held every Thursday, with names in by 12.45 pm for a 1pm start. All are most welcome to join in.

The Men’s 100 Up final was played on Friday between Frank Ritchie and Rob Fisher and the results will be in the next notes.

The Ladies 100 Final has now been completed with Sonia McLeish having a great last end with nine points to get past Lorraine Ritchie, winning 102 to 98.

The scores had been level three times during the game in what was a close contest throughout. Congratulations to Sonia.

The Men’s Pairs is the only outstanding match still to be completed

Anzac Day Triples is our next event, so get you teams arranged. Fliers will be distributed very soon, and presentation day is Sunday, April 13.

COHUNA GOLF

MEMBERS have been scattered to the four corners of northern Victoria this week, with the club colours evident at Murray Downs, Quambatook and Wakool over the long weekend.

Congratulations to Yvonne and Gwen who won the 60 and over ladies’ title at regional level, whilst Ron and Mick, along with our fours side of Jason, Col, Ian and Mick, both got tipped out in their respective grand final games.

With the streaming of games now a regular feature of local bowls, it was terrific to be able to support them all from afar.

Craig Whittaker and guest member Roy Dehne won Sunday’s pairs at Quamby, whilst Peter Bibby, Frank Trezise and Jon Henty took home the winners’ cash at the Wakool Skins Tournament.

Great work, everybody.

The ladies’ games continued on Tuesday, with pairs played in fine conditions.

Winners on the day were Helen Hall and Corrie Murchie on a countback from Linda and Noelene.

A beautiful evening and a lively green set the stage for our night pennant grand final, and what a great night it was.

Mal Appleby continued his recent good form to skip the winning side of Jason Hall and Leigh McLaren, defeating Max Simmonds, Steve Brown and Barb Barry.

The second four winners were Margot Henty, George Payne ad Glen Rossignol, narrowly ahead of Alan Cooke, Geoff Hall and Joe Distefano.

The accompanying competition for non-finalists was cleaned up by Helen Hall, Darren Barry and Lee Johnson. To wind up the season all enjoyed a great supper provided by Max and Lee Sutherland.

From all players, and the Board of the Club a big thank you to Di Woolhouse, Winko McLoughlan, Tucker Peace and all regular helpers for their organisation over the year.

Some hardy souls lined up again the next day for Thursday pairs, although counter events reduced the field a fair bit.

One was the funeral of past member Ron Morris, who was keen to participate right into his nineties, and never stopped having an interest in the fortunes of the club.

Vale Ron.

The best of the smallish field were Maree Scott and the shared pairing of Steve Brown and Mick Carmody, whilst Peter Coates and Fiona Kendall took home the repechage cash.

The much sought after encouragement awards went to Marian Smith, Noelene Brown and John Prout.

With quieter times more likely this week, we can expect a good attendance this Thursday.

Thanks to John Prout for running the show in Jean’s absence.

Midweek pennant also finished up this week, congratulations to our sister club in Gunbower for claiming the Second Division flag after their first year participating, and also well done to Barham, the Division One winners.
