KERANG GOLF

THURSDAY social bowls was played last week in beautiful autumn conditions, with 15 players taking part.

After two games, the pairing of Jimmy and Bryce McLeish prevailed with a massive 32 shots up from their two victories to win the major prize, while the runner’s up were Wayne Neville and Marlene Rawson, who also won both games.

Chocolates went to Sonia McLeish, ‘Curly’ Curtis and Les Gibson, but no scores will be mentioned, with only one on the wrong bias this week, which went to ‘Aldo’.

Saturday bowls saw nine players, including some caravanners, playing Scroungers, with the winner in a play-off Laurie Gray, with Jimmy McLeish finishing as runner-up.

Social Bowls continues at Kerang Golf on Thursdays and Sundays, with the local football season starting this week.

A final report from the trip away and as has been mentioned, there were two rascals present, but no names have been spoken of. Apparently they went to the beer can place on Saturday morning, but all the cans were empty, upsetting the two rascals.

Our presentation day will be held on Sunday, April 13, with a short game of bowls to be followed by presentations and then our Annual General Meeting.

Nomination forms for committee positions are available from Judy McKerrow or Jimmy McLeish.

Friday, April 25, sees our annual fundraiser for the Kerang Branch of the RSL, with both bowls and golf to be held.

It is always a great day, with all proceeds going to our local RSL, so get you teams in to Aldo on 0407 310 762 or on Frank Ritchie 0409 439 029 or write your entry on the sheet on the noticeboard.

Don’t forget the other tournaments at our neighbouring clubs, with Gunbower this coming Sunday to be followed by Barham the next weekend and then Kerang over the Easter break.

Our Waverley Shield bowls teams went to Cohuna Golf on Sunday and came home with a second place, finishing just one point behind the host team of John Keely, Ron and Yvonne Eckhardt and Len Mathers.

Well done to Jimmy and Sonia McLeish, Laurie Gray and Graeme Hayes.

The Kerang golfers won the Cohuna Cup – well done – with next year’s event to be held at Maryborough.

COHUNA GOLF

THE milder weather brought the Tuesday bowlers out in force this week, with triples the order of the day.

Trophy recipients were Linda, Rhonda and Elaine, who combined well to have the highest winning margin on the day.

The final of the club fours followed with spectators enjoying a very close game, with the Keely rink just defeating Col Barton’s team 15 shots to 14.

On Thursday, we staged the first round of the pie and soup series, in combination with our Russ McLoughlan Memorial Day.

Russell has been remembered annually for his participation in the club and with terrific support from his family, it has grown into a massive day for all involved.

A full field of 28 teams took part, with only three able to string together the required three victories.

Winners on the day were the Cohuna trio of Mike Hofman, Jeff Reade and Peter Vander Zande, ahead of Col Anderson, Rodney Bannister and Gail Anderson, while third place went to the Echuca side headed by John Exton.

Friday we celebrated inside with our presentation night, which was really well attended.

Major awards won over the season were handed out by the trio of president John Keely, secretary Yvonne Eckhardt and MC for the night, Ian Coates, in between courses of Ben North’s wonderful catering.

The winners.

Two special awards were made following the trophy presentations in the form of life memberships to Irene Trezise and Michael Carmody.

A resume of their contributions that both have made to the club over many years was warmly applauded by all present.

Fellow life members Peter Bibby and Yvonne Eckhardt pinned the appropriate badges on the two very worthy recipients of the club’s highest honour.

The week was wound up on Sunday with the Waverly Shield and Cohuna Cup being played at our club, the event solely for golf clubs with a bowling section attached.

Twelve clubs from all over participated, with the locals copping most of the glory at presentation time.

Winners were president John Keely, Ron Eckhardt, Yvonne Eckhardt and Len Mathers ahead of a Kerang Golf side, headed by their president Jim McLeish.

The Waverly Golf & Bowls Club trophy will take pride of place in our clubrooms for the next 12 months.

Thanks to all who contributed to the staging of the day, from taking entries, preparing the greens and catering so well for all who took part, both in bowls and golf.
