COHUNA GOLF

IT was the penultimate outing for our Tuesday social bowlers this week, with teams organised into pairs.

Best on the day were Noelene Brown and Val Farrant, with a reminder for participants this week to please bring a plate to join in a wind-up luncheon.

Our Pie and Soup series was based at Cohuna this week, with super conditions for all players.

A Leitchville trio won the day, with the Golf side of John Prout, Elaine Bartram and Lee Sutherland worthy runner’s up, while sneaking into third place were Doug Peace, Frank Trezise and Alan Dunne.

We’re off to Gunbower this Thursday, with Peter Coates in charge of entries.

Members went in all directions over the remainder of the week, with Mick Carmody on the winner’s dais at Barham on Friday, whilst ‘Bluey’ Fletcher travelled to Warrnambool for an Arms tournament, skipping the runner up rink with players from Inglewood.

Barham’s two day event on the weekend drew bowlers from all over the state, with the trio of Craig Whittaker, Steve Baker and Pat Quinn grabbing the lion’s share of the cash as the only seven game winner.

Well done to you all, a super result.

Peter Bibby’s side of Tony Cantwell and Ron Eckhardt won six games but with not enough shots up to figure in the presentations.

On the home front, our Annual Meeting was held during the week, with John Keely continuing as president.

His executive consists of secretary Yvonne Eckhardt and treasurer Mary Rodwell, replacing Mick Carmody who is having a well-deserved spell after 16 years handling our finances.

The board will now move on with the tasks of appointing selectors and filling the various other positions left vacant after nominations closed.

In his report, John summarised all activities over the year, including pennant, Wednesday Night social, infrastructure improvements, volunteer participation and social outings.

With members all having a positive attitude, he felt sure the coming season would again see Cohuna Golf very prominent in Northern District rankings.

Bowls this week is based on Kerang’s Easter events, with members reminded that we need a team for their Star day on Monday.

KERANG GOLF

A BIG Sunday at the Kerang Golf Bowls Club, with our annual presentation day and Annual General Meeting filling in the afternoon after our Sunday social bowls.

The presentations of all trophies that were won during the season took place and also the Hawthorn Cup for the winning team in NDPA Saturday Pennant was again presented to the Division 2 team.

The Annual General meeting followed a sumptuous afternoon tea. In his president’s report, Jim McLeish told the meeting of the highlights of the year, including winning the Division 2 premiership of the Northern District Playing Area, new shades on the Westland Green as well as the lazering of the said green, the recent covering of the section between the gazebo and the bar area and the club’s representatives, Frank and Lorraine Ritchie representing the region in the Championships at Ballarat in January.

He also thanked all the other members who gave of their time over the year to keep our club and the bowling green in playing condition, help fundraise and generally keep the club in a great financial position.

Life member Dale Spinks then took the chair for the appointment of office bearers and it is pleasing to announce that Rob Fisher has agreed to take over the president’s position after McLeish has led the club over the previous two years.

Rob is the Royal Hotel publican and now doubles up as our major sponsor and top official.

Graeme Hayes again takes the role of vice presidents and Judy McKerrow and Peter Niall have taken on the secretary and treasurer jobs they have so expertly filled for numerous years. Howard McClelland continues in his job as club captain, while Sid Hutchinson is a new committee person and joins the other re-elected members, Noel Robertson, Robert ‘Fonzy’ Taylor, Alan Hird, Jim McLeish, Allison Medson, Mick Pors and Laurie Gray.

Congratulations to all these members who will guide Kerang Golf Bowls through the next season.

It was also agreed that the club pursue a new uniform design for the coming season and the sub committee has been given the go-ahead to order new shirts for all members for the coming season.

These will be subsidised by club funds from income derived from all of our activities.

Thursday social bowls was attended by 19 players and a mixture of pairs and triples played the regulatory two games.

With a total of 14 shots up and with two wins, David Randell, Howard McClelland and John Murphy took home the major money, with Rob Fisher, Carol Pay and Marlene Rawson taking the runner’s up prize with four shots up with their two wins.

Chocolates to Sonia McLeish and Allison Medson.

As mentioned earlier, a new addition to the bowls area this week as well, with the cover over the area between the bar and the gazebo being built by the Tilburn Welding team, and what a great job they have done.

After our Anzac Day triples, the shelters on the southern end of the Alec Mitchell green will be also be replaced, again by the Tilburn team.

All these improvements come with money raised from tournaments, raffles and cash for cans scheme.

Prior to our activities, our Sunday social bowls was enjoyed by 20 members, prior to the presentation day and Annual General Meeting.

Three bowl pairs was the game and new president Rob Fisher teamed with Craig Hicks to win the major prize with two wins and 14 shots up, ahead of runners up, Stuart Robinson and Howard McClelland, who also won both games, but only nine shots up.

Third place went to Jim McLeish and Neil Paul with a win and a tied game, while the chocolates went to Dale Spinks and Marlene Orr.

Social bowls continues on Thursdays and Sundays, with names to be in by 12.45pm for a 1pm start, with all bowlers most welcome to join.

A reminder to all bowlers that the Kerang Easter tournament starts this Friday and continues over the weekend, and our own Anzac Day triples event is the following Friday, April 25.

There are still spots left, but get in soon as they will fill up.
