This is one of the most prestigious events on the Kerang Bowling Clubs calendar and a win in this event is highly sought after, with many thanks to the Greenwood family for their continued support.

A number of our club’s players competed in the Kerang Golf Clubs Anzac Day triples event, with Rod Pascoe, Don Monaghan and Lindsay Hein taking the top prize and Alyne Fagg, John Henty and Barry Theobald finishing third.

The club’s presentation day has been postponed until a later date, thus freeing up players to attend the Pyramid Hill seafood tournament on Sunday, May 4.

The club’s new constitution is being finalised, with a special meeting to be called in the near future, where it will be presented to the members for their approval.

KERANG GOLF

THE highlight of the week at the Kerang Golf Bowls Club was the staging of the annual Anzac Day triples charity tournament, with all proceeds being handed to the local RSL Branch.

With rain forecast and the skies threatening to dump the predicted 20 to 40mm of rain, the day was completed before the rain settled in – but only just.

After the usual pie, provided by Gray’s Bakery, and soup lunch served by the local Rotarians, bowls got underway at the gazetted time, this is despite a couple of showers threatening to halt proceedings, with all games completed and players in the clubhouse before the rain came.

After the regulatory three games, there were five combinations who won all their matches, but the points system separated them all, with honourable mentions to the Lake Boga team of Kane Kendall, David Condy and Noel Hender, who finished fifth with 70 points and Kerang Golf’s David Randell, Rob “Curly” Curtis and Sid Hutchinson, who had 74 points for fourth place.

Podium finishes went to the combination team of Barry Theobald, Alan Fagg and Jon Henty, who had 75 points and finished third, with Graeme Hayes, Ken and Carol Pay (Kerang Golf) the runner’s up with 76 points.

However, one point more was enough for the Kerang trio of Rodney Pascoe, Don Monaghan and Lindsay Hein to take out first place with 77 points, while included with their win were vouchers from BWS, which were appreciated by the players.

The best last game score was won by Rob Fisher, Jeff Anderson and Dale Spinks (Kerang Golf) with 26 points, while the chocolates went to Noel Robertson, John “Digger” Peck and Stuart Robinson.

RSL President, Darren Berry conducted a short RSL service for all present and accepted the proceeds of the day, which was nearly $1500 from Golf Club president, Chris Gray.

Darren thanked the Golf Club for their continued contribution to the RSL on this day and hoped it would continue to be a successful event for many years to come.

Thursday social bowls was played the previous day with 13 players in attendance.

The winners were Frank Ritchie, Marlene Rawson and Neil Paul, who were the only two game winners, while the runners up were Jimmy McLeish, Craig Hicks and Dave Wood, with chocolates going to David, Bryce, Rosie and Marie.

Social Bowls is held each Thursday and Sunday, with names to be registered by 12.45pm for a 1pm start.

Everyone, whether you are a visitor, non-bowler or member of another club, is invited to come along and enjoy a couple of hours of bowls, fun and frivolity on the greens at Kerang Golf.

Not many players at our Sunday social, but Laurie Gray, Allison Medson and Craig Hicks were the winners.

Congratulations also to Aldo, Andy Jeffs and Craig Hicks, who teamed with Norm Smith from Swan Hill Racecourse and finished runners up at Kerang’s Star Day on Easter Monday, while the winners were a Leitchville team, skippered by Tony Cantwell.

Pyramid Hill’s Seafood Day is this Sunday, if members are looking for a tournament to go to.

COHUNA GOLF

WITH most bowls activities winding down, it was a pleasure to last week host the next game in the pie and soup series.

Twenty two teams made for great competition, with only four sides getting through unscathed.

The leading points scorer was the Cohuna team of Mike Hofman, Jeff Reade and Peter Vander Zande, with second going to the Gunbower side of Ian Howard, Rhonda Ballard and Kate Peace and Pat Quinn’s Golf side finishing third, with Len Mathers team the unfortunate ones to miss out.

Thanks to all who contributed to the success of the day, especially our valued sponsors Cohuna Tyrepower and the wonderful ladies who take care of the catering.

This week it’s back down to Leitchville.

Despite two inches of rain on Friday night, the Lake Boga tournament went ahead the next day, with our representatives struggling somewhat with the heavy greens.

It was a great weekend nevertheless, with a team from Maryborough’s Highland Society winning for the second year in a row.

Other members played on Anzac Day at Kerang Golf and as far away as Hillston in NSW.
