Bowls Notes

KERANG

ALONG with our visitors from neighbouring clubs last Tuesday, we welcomed Som Pascoe back from Thailand, Barry Theobald from Bendigo and Graeme Morris from a few days flying around the Outback, with the highlight being the flight over Lake Eyre – with a positive recommendation for others to enjoy it whilst the water is flowing.

The meat voucher raffle was won by ‘Stretch’ Duckworth, while ‘Tige’ Neville will make good use of the Sporties voucher.

Two game winners for the day were Alyne Fagg, Marlene Rawson and Corale Jones from Cohuna, with a good score of plus 14 shots.

Not to be outdone, ‘Tige’ Neville, Barry Theobald and Judy Hipwell went out smarting from a loss in game one and took revenge against their opposition to win their second game by 28 shots.

The jackpot number drawn was minus 28 and no one had the lucky number, so next week the jackpot is worth $114.

Along with members from Northern District, Mid Murray and Deniliquin host clubs, a few of us represented the Kerang Bowling Club and enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea at CluBarham on Saturday as the guests of Bowls Victoria for our support in running the over 60’s carnival last year.

It is anticipated that the event will continue to prosper and district clubs are vital to facilitate such an event in this area.

Others enjoyed a game of social bowls on Saturday afternoon to catch up and hone their skills in preparation for the 2025-26 season.

Members are reminded of the importance of attending the Annual General Meeting of the Kerang Bowling Club Inc. on Wednesday, September 17, at 7pm at the club rooms.

Your support is vital to the successful running of the club, so please make sure you mark it on your calendar, with nomination forms available from the club rooms.

We have our medley pairs tournament and official opening of the season on Saturday, September 20, and we welcome entries from all other clubs.

Entries to either Jason Brown, Rod Pascoe, or via the Kerang Bowling Club email at kerangbowls@gmail.com, or alternatively by adding them to the list on the notice board.

Racecourse Bowling Club from Swan Hill will be our guests for a barbecue lunch before a practice match on Sunday, September 28, with names on the noticeboard list as soon as possible if you are available to play.

Congratulations to Gary Borg, who has accepted the position of chair of the Northern District Playing Area.

Well done to our Som Pascoe, who formed a composite team of Lainie Aiello (Bendigo East), Rhonda Ballard (Gunbower) and herself to play in the Helen Robertson Classic Triples tournament at Euston over the weekend.

Their efforts were well rewarded, taking third place to be in the generous prize money.

COHUNA GOLF

THE sunny skies at present are heralding another bowls season, and aren’t we all looking forward to it.

Thanks to the final round of the combined ladies’ tournament, their event has already opened our greens, with 12 rinks taking part in the Riverland Hardware sponsored day in perfect conditions.

After a lot of friendly banter, and more than a few excellent bowling displays, a Barham rink headed by Lyn Ashton came up winners, just ahead of a Pyramid Hill team skipped by Marie Noelker.

Thanks to greens staff, caterers and tournament secretary Noelene for putting together such a top day.

This leads on to our calendar of events, with the weekly pairs due to commence on Thursday, September 11, with our Mawson’s opening day tournament following on Sunday, September 14.

Practice matches against Echuca and Cohuna have been organised for a little later in the month, with sheets up on our noticeboard for names of participants.

We welcome quite a few new arrivals to the club, particularly previous members Daryl and Kathy Weymouth, who have moved back to the district after many years away.

Daryl’s greens know-how, plus bowls ability, will be of great value to the club.

Hope they get all their renovations sorted out before pennant begins.

Over the weekend, many members went across to Barham to support Harrison and Jarred who, as part of the Barham Suns outfit, were playing in the VBL event.

After round one, which the Suns won three matches to one, they headed the overall ladder.

Despite a loss to Moama, the Suns had accrued enough points through all three matches to finish on top of their section, meaning further play next weekend at the Moama bowls complex.

Our best wishes go out to the team, and our members in particular.

A green is prepared for practice on Tuesdays and Fridays, so take advantage of this and we’ll have everyone in top form when games begin in earnest.
