Junior coaching program underway

A junior coaching program got under way at Kerang Golf Club last Sunday afternoon with the assistance of a grant from the Bus Stop Recycle Shop.

Carol Barton, Pam Munro, Ronda Boulton and Janice Williams, from the Bus Stop Recycle Shop, were in attendance for the unveiling of the ‘My Golf’ equipment purchased with the grant money.

The Kerang Golf Club wanted to thank the ladies for the assistance provided by the op shop, and to show them how the money was being used to benefit a new generation of golfers, both girls and boys.

Under the guidance of local golfing identity Andrew Spitty, the budding golfers were shown how to hold a club and how to swing it.

All 11 children taking part in the junior coaching program were able to enjoy the challenge of beginning to grasp the basics of golf, while spending time outdoors.

Secretary of Kerang Golf Club, Graham Wyte was delighted with the success of the first session of the junior golf program and explained the significance of running it.

“It is vitally important to engage the youth of today for they are our future.

“It gives the club the sense that what we work so hard to build and maintain will be passed on to safe hands.

“As for the first session, it was really encouraging to see them taking in what was being shown and so many of them are girls, which is fantastic.”

The sessions run on Sunday at 3pm and new participants are welcome.

Wyte also praised the contribution of Rhonda Allan of the Mallee Sports Assembly.

“Rhonda has been a big help in getting this program off the ground,” he said of the discussions the pair had in the lead up to its establishment.
