Good field for golf

Kerang

Thursday Golf

R & R day saw a good field of 22 golfers enjoy the course and get some more practice for the last round of club championships.

It was good to have Greg Gin back from holidays, Tony Laughlin back from injury into the field and visitors from Murrabit and Berri Willock attend.

This day’s winners was Lachlan Gillies (28) on a count back from Ken Williams and the inform Col Wilkie, all on 37 pts.

On 36 pts were Tony Laughlin (12) and Greg Gin (16). Rob Fabry finished with 34 pts and Geoff Williams was our most consistent Thursday golfer.

The best of them off the par threes were 3rd Poddy Free, 5th Poddy Free (for the third time in a row), 9th Joe Tartaglia, 13th Ron Thouliss and 16th Tony Laughlin.

We also had a match in our Ian Westland 4BB knock out, with Joe T and Greg Gin beating Don Ross/Graham Wyte 4/2.

Saturday Golf

On another windy day, which we seem to be getting every golf day, 44 golfers braved the elements to test their skills against mother nature.

The hottest player on the circuit now, Col Wilkie (15), had another good day with a score of 39 pts to win on count back from Poddy Free (18).

In the ball pool was Poddy Free, Don Ross (11) 38, Meryl Cameron (16) 38, Rob Fabry (23) 36, David Gray (18), Casey Gillen (22), Gary Pay (17) all on 35, and Gary Thorne on 34.

Nearest the pins were 3rd Poddy Free, 5th Gary Pay, 9th Andrew Spitty, 13th Super Pin Don Ross and the 16th to Blake Shay.

In the ladies’ section, our youngest golfer, Olive Spitty, won with 38 pts on a count back from Meryl Cameron.

Olive is currently playing at Toowoomba GC in the Under 12 State School Sports, so all the best to her from the Kerang GC for this week.

Club Championships

In the last round of club championships, Andrew Spitty went into it with a 9-shot lead, increasing that to 12 shots to win from Gary Thorne, who has now come runner-up for the seventh time.

B grade winner was Col Wilkie, coming from behind to win by 2 shots from our second round leader, Peter Hall.

C grade winner was Casey Gillen, who led from start to finish to win by a huge 43 shots from the luckless Lindsay Hogg.

Spitty played the steadiest of the final group of golfers in the wind to score over the three rounds with 81-74-77=232.

Gary Thorne could not quite handle the conditions over the three rounds with 82-85-79=246. This was Andrew Spitty’s 5th title overall and his first in five years.

In B grade, Peter Hall led after the first two rounds, but could not hold back the red hot form of Col Wilkie, who flew home in the last two rounds to win 95-80-83=258. He won by two from Peter Hall 82-88-90=260.

C grade’s Casey Gillen played very consistent golf with 94-98-94=286 to beat Lindsay Hogg 114-109-106=329.

Other trophy winners were NDGA Medallist – Peter Hall, Winter Cup – Paul Goodson, Summer Cup – Jarrad Walker, Matt Colville Medallist of the Year – Poddy Free and the Charlie Nesbit Trophy for the best nett score over the three rounds was Col Wilkie with 210 nett.

Don’t forget Twilight Golf has started. Anyone can play, just turn up and hit-off between 4pm and 6pm for an enjoyable nine holes of golf.

The Laughie 4BBB is on November 24, so put your name down for a good days golf. All players in this event must have a current golf handicap.

On Sunday, we had a great Groove on the Green. It was attended by over 130 people in perfect weather. They enjoyed the music of Lachy Sommerville and the Brothers from Bendigo, food from the Wood Box in Kerang and Table for Twelve with Orange Door Catering from Swan Hill. By all comments, this is a must see event if you’ve never been before.

Kerang ladies

TWELVE ladies played in very windy conditions again, with Mandy Ackland winning on 35 pts from Meryl Cameron on 33 pts.

Ball pool saw Ruth McAlister and Michelle Dillon on 32 pts.

The prestigious pen award went to Joyce Boyd.

NTP Chino’s 9th hole was Rhonda Willoughby and June’s 3rd hole went to Michelle Dillon.

Next week’s starting time will be earlier, with assembly at 8.30am for a 9am hit-off.

Volunteers are still needed for the Christmas stocking raffle roster. If you can help, please see Lyn Sambrooks or Michelle Dillon.
