Olive sets course record again

LAKE Charm’s Olive Spitty broke the Kerang Golf Club’s course record at the weekend – again.

The women’s record now stands at 69.

Olive broke the old record of 70, which she set last year.

In her spare time, playing at Murray Downs last October, she rewrote the record books there as well – her course record now stands at 68 after she dispatched the previous best, which had stood since the 1990s.

And she’s still only 14.

As well as turning the local golf game on its head, Olive is pretty keen on collecting club championships as well.

She already has eight of those – four at Kerang, two at Murray Downs and two at Commonwealth.

Yes, this teenage dynamo needs to constantly extend her game, so she joined the Melbourne-based championship golf course and took out the club titles as a 12-year-old and again at 13.

Not surprisingly, her father Andrew said Olive had also been recruited into the Victorian junior team, which would further accelerate her progress.

“I’m a pretty keen golfer, and I started taking her with me when she was younger and it sort of took off from there,” Andrew said.

“She got her first handicap when she was seven and she now plays off scratch.

“If Olive is not on the golf course, and she is every weekend, you can always find her in the backyard chipping ball into a bucket, or working on her putting or something.

“The biggest challenge we face right now is as she gets bigger every year, we need a new set of clubs to match every year.”

Andrew said that had been made more manageable with some support from clubmaker Calloway.

But if you think such a precious talent is scary, Olive’s 10-year-old sister Mabel is playing off 12 right now and looking every bit as sharp.

And she’s only 10.
