Making a hole in one, twice

LONG time sporting rivals and friends Jan Harry and Lexie Ewen both made their first holes in one at the first hole at Barham Golf Club last week.

CluBarham Golf Club manager Sienna Voglis congratulated the two women on their achievements.

“Jan and Lexie are the first members to have a hole in one on this hole since it opened in 2024,” she said.

Harry and Ewen have known each other since their days playing on opposing A Grade basketball teams in the local league in their late teens, and both joined the Barham Golf Club when they were 40.

They now both play in the Ladies Competition at Barham Golf Club at least once a week on Saturday and Wednesday.

Harry said getting her own hole-in-one was exciting, but to share it with Ewen four days later took the euphoria to another level.

“It made it so much more memorable to share it with someone I’ve had a connection with for such a long time,” she said.

“In a golfer’s life, the ultimate goal is to get a hole-in-one, so for the two of us to achieve it in the same hole four days apart is pretty cool.

“I was so excited when I saw it go in, and I didn’t witness Lexie’s but I think she went pretty crazy like I did.”

The joy of the achievement was heightened by the layout of the green, which gives a direct view of the hole from the tee.

“It was a good feeling to witness your short and see it go straight in the hole,” Harry said.

“I was rushing to golf which is unusual for me, so I had no time to warm up or practice, I just went out there and after 19 years playing golf, got it straight in.”

The two women enjoyed a celebratory drink at the club with the other ladies at the club, and will receive their hole-in-one balls mounted on a trophy.
