Wimbledon flavour to tennis bonanza

A BLOCKBUSTER Easter weekend of sports is on offer in Gannawarra.

There will be enough for everyone with the Good Friday Cohuna and Woorinen feature football match, Kerang Cup Day, bowls tournaments and tennis galore.

Three tennis tournaments will be running in Gannawarra this long weekend.

Kerang, Murrabit and Cohuna tennis clubs will all be hosting tournaments.

Of the trio, the Kerang Lawn Tennis Club’s Easter Carnival was set to welcome the most visitors, with 464 players entered.

This was a massive increase from last year’s 352, and club treasurer Kellie Crellin was delighted with the high turnout and the quality of players that will take the court.

“We’re ecstatic – it’s going to be a full-on weekend for us volunteers, but we couldn’t be more pleased,” she said.

“There’s a Swan Hill tournament just after Easter, so we’ve been able to attract some open tour players as a lead-in (event) for them.”

All age groups and levels of players, from open singles and mixed doubles through to under-10s, were set to play on the fantastic courts that had been worked on “around the clock”, Crellin said.

In an exciting development, games will be played under lights to fit in the whole schedule, but Easter Sunday had Crellin excited.

“We’ve introduced a Wimbledon theme day on Easter Sunday where everyone will come along dressed in their whites – which is a first for our club – so it will be a sea of whites across the courts and the clubhouse,” she said.

A big weekend also awaited Murrabit Lawn Tennis Club, who’ll be putting on their 76th Easter Tennis Tournament.

Good Friday will see the mixed doubles pairings take the court before the regular doubles on Saturday take centre stage.

Visitors and locals alike can enjoy all on offer in Murrabit this weekend with the Murrabit Easter Market on Saturday morning.

Cohuna Lawn Tennis Club round out the tournaments with a four-day tennis bonanza.

Almost 200 people were expected to compete at the tournament, which has a great family vibe with some competitors attending for more than 50 years.
