Water, wine and charm – Kerang

Kerang is situated 281km from Melbourne on the Murray Valley Highway. It is 60km by road to Swan Hill, 130km north of Bendigo and 100km from Echuca.

Kerang is a surprising oasis in the north-west of Victoria.

The town has a friendly country feel about it, and locals who will greet you on the main street.

There is a mix of franchise and boutique stores in the CBD, and the town is a centre for manufacturing with renewed business such as Mac’s Shortbread,

Faucet Tapware, Dunstan Farm Engineering and Kerfab.

Kerang boasts an incredible wetlands system that supports one of Australia’s largest ibis breeding grounds, amongst other native bird species.

The intricate system of more than 50 lakes, swamps and lagoons that stretch from Lake Boga in the north to Kerang in the South attracts anglers, bird watchers and campers from all over the country.

This series of lakes are easily accessed off the Murray Valley Highway just north of Kerang, stretching almost as far as Swan Hill.

Lake Charm and Kangaroo Lake are the most popular for campers, water-skiers, boating enthusiasts and families looking for fun in the autumn.

But there are smaller waterways, too (23 in all), meaning you can escape the crowds and enjoy a quiet swim or cast a line and catch a redfin, yellow belly or Murray cod (season open until August 31) for dinner.
